SEA (Service, Evangelism, Assistance) Mission has spent the past 20-plus years making annual trips to the Bahamas, and this year, they brought some tennis gear with them.

As part of the organization’s 2019 Vacation Bible School mission at St. Jude’s Anglican Church in Taino Beach in June, it hosted a four-day youth sports camp that featured sports like tennis, soccer, and football. All teams were lead by volunteers from the Orchard Community Churches of Lake City and Live Oak, Florida.

98 children participated in the activities, with 14 between the ages of 6 and 15 taking part in the tennis camp. The Lake City Columbia Community Tennis Association provided a Net Generation bag of tennis equipment for SEA Mission’s event.  Read more >>

Coral Harbour Beach, inset, and Saunders Beach, main picture, are two of the beaches in The Bahamas awarded “green status’ by swimguide.org.

By DENISE MAYCOCK

dmaycock@tribunemedia.net

ABOUT 20 beaches in The Bahamas have received a "green status" meeting water quality standards that are safe for swimmers, according to an international swim guide website.

SwimGuide.org - which publishes the status of beaches around the world - released a status report following the latest water sample testings conducted in July by Save the Bays/Waterkeepers Bahamas.

The summer heat continues to drive people to the beach to cool off. Unfortunately, in Florida, some swimmers have contracted a flesh eating bacteria that has been blamed for recent deaths and severe hospitalisation of individuals in the United States.

To ensure that beaches are safe, Save the Bays/Waterkeepers Bahamas conduct ongoing monitoring of water quality at nearly 20 beach sites in The Bahamas, including Bimini, Grand Bahama, and in New Providence.  Read more >>

Former Bahamas Christian Council (BCC) President Bishop Simeon Hall

Attorney Fred Smith, QC, agrees referendum should be held on the issue.

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Former Bahamas Christian Council (BCC) President Bishop Simeon Hall said yesterday that he is no longer a supporter of the death penalty.

“I am no longer a supporter of that kind of dealing with our crime problem,” he told Eyewitness News Online.

“If government feels it’s best to go forward and ask the Bahamian people, then that’s their right.

“The majority of the Bahamian people are pro-capital punishment, but I am not.”

Amid calls from domestic and international organizations for an abolishment of capital punishment in The Bahamas, Attorney General Carl Bethel said in March that capital punishment is not going anywhere.

The issue of capital punishment in The Bahamas has repeatedly been the subject of widespread public debate over the years.

Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis reiterated support for the measure a year ago.

At the time, however, Minnis said he was bound by the law.

He said the matter will be discussed in Cabinet.  Read more >>

At the end of the school year, the Grade 3 students embarked on an inquiry about simple machines and how they make lives easier. During this investigation, the students realised that a wheelchair is a machine that continues to make life easier for many, especially children with disabilities. With this knowledge, they took action - they raised money to purchase wheelchairs for the Bahamas Association for the Physically Disabled (BAPD).

Preparation for SiP 2019 begins!

And just as the Phoenix . . . .

Today, rehearsals begin for the 11th annual Shakespeare in Paradise Theatre Festival. The four major works this year are Measure for Measure, Old Story Time, Short Tales 2019 and Ain’t Misbehavin’. The festival will open on September 30th and run through October 12th.

The Dundas remains open! Since the recent break-in and vandalism we have had rentals for three productions in the theatre, and starting today, approximately 70 actors, directors, backstage crew and volunteers will begin work on putting together some of the finest theatre that this country has to offer.

Last week was difficult for our theatre family, but this will not hold us back. As we continue to raise funds to fix and replace the material things that were lost, our spirit has not been broken—and the theatre community will grow even stronger from the acts of these lesser mortals.

We appreciate your encouragement and support and we look forward to more of the same as the performing arts community join with artists in other disciplines to help open the heart to new learning for many people, allowing them to gain control over strong feelings, and letting them transform emotions into new and creative energies. As the composer Stephen Sondheim said, “Art, in itself, is an attempt to bring order out of chaos.”

Is This Resort Home to the Most Beautiful Bahamas Beach?

The question for those considering a Cape Santa Maria Resort vacation: “To what lengths would you go to experience one of the most beautiful beaches in the world?”

Cape Santa Maria Resort is located on Long Island. We aren’t talking about the island next to Brooklyn and Queens in New York. Cape Santa Maria’s Long Island is an 80-mile-long sliver located 190 miles south of Nassau in the Bahamas.

General Manager Matt Brear believes that there is a special element that connects most of his guests. “It’s a challenge to take that extra flight in a small airplane to get here. This place attracts like-minded individuals. They are seeking a sense of adventure,” Brear said with a smile.  Read more >>

Author Philip Rahming details how one undelivered letter could have altered the events surrounding the release of Nelson Mandela and Sir Lynden Pindling's drug trade allegations.

NASSAU, Bahamas, -- In his new book, Philip Rahming reflects on when he served as the President of the Bahamas Christian Council and the work done by the 1983-1984 commission to investigate allegations that Sir Lynden Pindling, the country's prime minister and an influential figure, was involved in the drug trade. He was then tasked with signing and delivering a condemnatory letter against Pindling that had the potential to create political discord in the country. Rahming did not sign or delivered the letter while he passed through and endured much private pains. "The Unsigned, Undelivered Letter: Pindling Left Free, Mandela Set Free" is the incredible true story of Rahming's fateful decision and a look at the events that took place as a result.  Read more >>

Heatwaves and protests this month in New York, London and Hong Kong may have left some urbanites dreaming of weekend breaks on isolated beaches.

The fastest route to fulfilling those fantasies is by private jet, an exclusive mode of transport growing increasingly popular among the ranks of the super-rich.

Private jet flights climbed almost 10% last year, according to an analysis of 30 island destinations by real estate broker Knight Frank and aviation adviser WingX. Private jets flew to islands in the Americas almost 30,000 times, making them the world’s top hub for non-commercial aviation, led by the Bahamas, Puerto Rico and the Cayman Islands.  Read more >>
