Joshua Harris says his marriage is over and apologises to LGBT+ people for promoting bigotry

The American author of a bestselling Christian guide to relationships for young people has announced that his marriage is over and he has lost his faith.

Joshua Harris, whose biblical guide to relationships I Kissed Dating Goodbye sold nearly 1m copies around the world after it was published in 1997, has also apologised to LGBT+ people for contributing to a “culture of exclusion and bigotry”.

In his book, Harris, a former pastor at a US megachurch, urged young Christians to reject dating for “courtship” under the guidance of parents and observing sexual abstinence. Young couples should not kiss, hold hands or spend time alone together before marriage, he said. Dating was spiritually unhealthy and a “training ground for divorce”, the book argued.

The book, written by Harris when he was 21, was widely circulated within evangelical Christian youth groups, helping to promote a “purity culture” and vows to preserve virginity until marriage.  Read more >>

By Sheldon Longley

For the first time in 11 years, The Bahamas has qualified for the FIBA (International Basketball Federation) Americas Under-18 (U18) Championships – just one step away from the junior world championships.

They got the job done with a thrilling 85-83 win over the Dominican Republic (DR) for the bronze medal at the 2019 Centrobasket Under-17 (U17) Boys Championships that wrapped up on Sunday at the historic Roberto Clemente Coliseum in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Romad Dean, who was huge for The Bahamas all tournament, put a statement mark on the game with a huge put-back dunk off a missed lay-up attempt by Deyton Albury with six seconds remaining, breaking an 83-83 tie. Jean Montero misfired on a three-point shot in the waning seconds, and Team Bahamas celebrated a hard-earned win.  Read more >>

Roger Clarke, 72, and wife Sue, 71, were arrested when their UK-bound cruise ship docked in Lisbon from the Bahamas in December last year.

The charges come as prosecutors admit they have been unable to identify the drug lords who “recruited” the couple.

A nine-page indictment made public today read: “Despite all the inquiries carried out to try to identify the people believed to have recruited them to transport the cocaine, it has not been possible to discover these individuals’ full identities or determine their whereabouts."

Outlining the decision to charge them with drugs trafficking, prosecutors added: "The suspects acted together with the specific purpose of receiving and carrying with them the cocaine and the objective of handing it over to a third party in exchange for money.  Read more >>

Luxury means different things to different people. It can be the luxury of design; the luxury of outstanding service; the luxury of exceptional food and drink; and it can be the luxury of extreme tranquility.

The many manifestations of luxury mean that it can often be difficult to accurately define the term. But traveling the Caribbean, one thing is clear: you know it when you see it.

These six hotels from St Kitts to The Bahamas to Antigua offer rich, unique interpretations of luxury, all with a common goal: making the guest feel marvelous.  Read more >>

I was only going to give up alcohol for a month but I wasn’t prepared for the impact it had

I drank to pretend my life was more interesting. Feeling slow or a little sad in the mornings was so normal I barely noticed it

‘If I’m honest, what I missed most is that feeling 30 minutes or so after the first drink. The feeling of bliss, when problems float away.’ Photograph: webphotographeer/Getty Images

By Gay Alcorn

Now what? I have given up alcohol for a month. That’s nothing special. Thousands of people do Dry July or Feb Fast or some random month. But it is a big thing. I hadn’t had 30 days off alcohol my entire adult life.

The reason I thought it was a good idea isn’t unique either. It’s boringly familiar. I’m middle aged and, after drinking modestly for decades, it had crept up. One glass of wine a night became two, and then three and – no point in skirting around the facts here – too often it was a bottle, sometimes more. Occasionally, if I was particularly anxious, I’d buy a bottle of wine during the day and drink the lot.

There’s shame in even writing that, but it’s true. Over the past few years, my husband and I had countless discussions and a few raging arguments about cutting back alcohol, and we tried the obligatory “alcohol-free nights”. But in the jargon of the online crowd experimenting with the previously unthinkable, I was “sober curious”.  Read more >>

The Nassuvians, the family islanders, the immigrant artists, men, women, and all who fall between. The "Visual Life of Social Affliction" (VLOSA) seeks to grapple with the ways in which Caribbean visual practice critically engages long-standing experiences of social suffering. Recognizing the real senses in which the Caribbean not only was born in the structural violence of Native genocide, African slavery, and Indian indenture instituted by colonial powers, but has been sustained since then by the relentless continuation of institutionalized disrespect, disregard, and dishonor, this project seeks to capture the destructive impact of dominating powers on the lives of Caribbean people.

"VLOSA" will open on Thursday, August 22nd, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. The opening is free and all are invited.

In the spirit of Emancipation Day, we are sharing this all-time favourite from the National Collection. John Beadle’s “Emancipation Day Boat Cruise” (1998) was one of the first works purchased for the National Collection, and shown at the Inaugural National Exhibition - the first-ever. Journeys over sea hold a difficult history for us, but Beadle’s bright depiction gives a sense of hopefulness alongside the awareness of our past - a notion to keep as we move forward as a nation and a region celebrating this day.

Lighthouse Point, the southernmost tip of the Bahamian island of Eleuthera, is loved by the local community for its vivid blue waters, pink sandy beaches, rocky shorelines, sea turtles, and lemon sharks.

The area contains diverse terrestrial and marine ecologies, including more than 200 bird species and four endemic plant species. The near shore reefs are home to the endangered staghorn coral.

Pintard: The goal is to eliminate the export of conch

Royston Jones Jr.

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — As the government moves to gradually reduce conch exports over the next three years before ultimately banning the export of the fisheries product, data released yesterday showed that nearly 640,000 pounds of conch meat was exported from The Bahamas in 2018.

The exported conch meat last year was valued at $4.48 million.

The royalties from the export amounted to $63,984, the data shows.

The figure is based on the regulated duty rate per pound and does not include other taxes such as stamp tax or value-added tax (VAT).

The data, released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources, also showed that nearly 138,000 pounds of conch shells, valued at $29,810, was exported last year.

The royalties associated with the export of conch shells last year was $29,810.

The government has announced plans to marginally decrease the quota of conch exports this year and dramatically reduce exports in 2020 and 2021 in line with the advice of international conservations.  Read more >>

YOU'VE GOT TO KNOW WHEN TO FOLD THEM
Dear Readers,
This week in Bahamian history gave us the 2019 race for leadership within one of the country's oldest political organizations: The Progressive Liberal Party. If you're a follower of local politics then you may have realized that our system is often a revolving door of the same faces. Many of our political leaders have made full-time careers of it - representing certain communities for decades. One such individual is former Tall Pines MP, Leslie Miller. The 'potcake', as he's affectionately called, has been at the forefront of our political landscape for all of my adult life; serving on multiple boards and held different chairmanships. What he's most known for however, is his sharp tongue and quick temper, both of which have made for some pretty interesting news soundbites over the years.

In the dead of night, officers forced their way into her home and began beating Mona and her children - all Bahamian citizens and detaining then without lawful cause.

by Matthew Jussim

If you want to get away and indulge in a beach vacation, you need to head to Long Island. No, we don’t mean the fish-shaped peninsula jutting out of New York, but rather the one in the Bahamas. Often likened to a string of pearls, the Bahamas comprises over 700 islands scattered across 100 square miles of ocean. So, yeah, there’s no shortage of stunning scenery.

But if you’re looking for an under-the-radar destination where you can truly get away from it all—and enjoy some of the world’s best beaches in the process—head to Long Island, a quiet spot with just over 3,000 residents. It’s a stark contrast to the main tourist destinations—namely Nassau and Paradise Island—giving you the chance to see the Bahamas in a more raw, unadulterated form.

Here are some of the best ways to explore the area’s hidden gems and unplug from the usual day-to-day grind.  Read more >>

Architect Chad Oppenheim Designs A Waterfront Beach House Set Into A Dune In The Bahamas

The house built into the crest of a dune blends in seamlessly with its heavenly surroundings

Miami-based architect Chad Oppenheim’s postcard-perfect, 5,000-sqft beach bungalow on pink-sand paradise Harbour Island in the Bahamas blends seamlessly into its surroundings and features breathtaking views of the Atlantic edge of the Great Bahamas bank. Intended to reconnect its occupants with nature, the two-story, five-bedroom and five-bathroom waterfront private residence was built in such a way so as to erase the boundaries between inside and outside to bring about a greater awareness of the elements.

Taking two years to complete, it serves as a second home for Oppenheim, his wife and their children, who come to visit every month and who share the bungalow with one other family. Focusing on simplicity rather than complexity to enhance the immersion into the natural environment and become a place for rejuvenation, meditation and inspiration, the house is about a less intrusive, primitive form of architecture that uses ecologically-conscious materials and methodologies.  Read more >>

GRAND Bahama fishermen and vendors yesterday rejected arguments for a closed conch season, telling The Tribune such a move would seriously impact their livelihood.

As debate continues about declining numbers, Minister of Agriculture and Marine Resources Michael Pintard revealed this week a national survey is being conducted among stakeholders for a closed conch season to protect stocks. Mr Pintard said a decision would be made after the government canvasses all stakeholders.

In Grand Bahama, conch vendors and divers sell conch every day at the fish and vegetable market, near the International Bazaar.

Many of them yesterday were opposed to the idea of a closed conch season.  “I do not support a closed conch season because diving and selling conch is our livelihood, said Nado Forbes.  Read more >>

The tropical 5-day forecast from the National Hurricane Center issued August 1, 2019, shows two disturbances in the Atlantic Ocean. The first, marked by the yellow 'X' may bring rainfall to the east coast through the weekend, but isn't expected to strengthen or develop. (NOAA)

CHARLESTON, SC (WCIV) — Two areas of tropical weather are worth keeping an eye on over the next several days and into next week.

The first is a large area of tropical moisture currently over the Bahamas and southern Florida.

ABC News 4 Storm Tracker Meteorologist Sonya Stevens said Thursday the disturbance could bring rainfall to the low country through the weekend.

Locally heavy rainfall will come to parts of the Florida peninsula and Georgia as the system moves northward.

However, the National Hurricane Center said Thursday the disturbance is not expected to strengthen or organize into a more powerful system.  Read more >>
