Disney Cruise Lines inspires future generations of seafarers at LJM Maritime Academy’s
NASSAU, BAHAMAS — As part of its dedication to inspiring future maritime professionals, Disney Cruise Line sponsored this year’s summer camp program at the LJM Maritime Academy in Nassau. More than 40 students, ranging in ages from 12 to 16 years old, were given the chance to learn more about the local and global maritime industry and gain a better understanding of its career opportunities.
During the two-week camp, students explored various aspects of maritime-oriented jobs and learned how traditional STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) subjects apply to the various roles available in the field. The program also builds hands-on skills required for seamanship by including lessons in boat handicraft, navigation, outdoor skills and first aid. Read more >>

Is the cruise industry responsible for overtourism?
By Francesca Street, CNN
(CNN) — You wake up and eat breakfast on your private balcony, admiring majestic views of the ocean.
You dock in port after port, crisscrossing the Mediterranean -- from the canals of Venice to the red roofs of Dubrovnik and back. Or you travel down the German Rhine or beach-hop in the Caribbean.
At each spot, you spend anywhere from a few hours to a day. Sometimes you don't even get off the boat. When you do, you're part of crowds of tourists, battling to see the views, scrambling to admire the sites.
The cruise ship industry is booming. Ships are getting bigger, better, more exciting and more experience-driven.
At the same time, ports are getting busier and more polluted, and residents are getting angrier.
In 2019, 30 million passengers are expected to cruise, up from 17.8 million a decade earlier.
So what impact are they having on destinations, and what can be done about it? Read more >>

My Experience Judging Miss Bahamas Universe
Miss Bahamas Universe, Tarea Sturrup.
As a judge, this was one of the hardest decisions I ever had to make. There were 11 women in the pageant. Many were not conventional beauties by pageant standards. Some bore tattoos, many were petite, others curvy, but they showed me and the other judges just why they deserved an opportunity to represent The Bahamas on the world stage. All of the women were highly intelligent.
I was also happy to see Bahamian girls of Haitian descent try to win the crown. Many of them talked about the hurdles they had to overcome, particularly the xenophobia and cruel remarks they had to endure as a result of their ancestry. It was quite eye opening.
As this was my first time judging a beauty pageant. I really didn’t know what to expect, but I do admit I had a lot of preconceived notions about the process. Read more >>

Gangster Turned Community Activist
Valentino ‘Scrooge’ Brown
I found myself sitting in an unfinished portion of a modest house through Lewis Street. My interviewee: a former gang leader.
Just the two of us.
He was schooled by the streets and well known to police. He was once leader of the Border Boys, a gang I heard about years ago, having grown up over the hill.
From I made contact with Valentino via telephone, I could detect sincerity in whom he has become. When we finally met in person, our conversation revealed that he undoubtedly has a checkered past. Yet through those eyes, I sensed a changed man. Admittedly, that didn’t stop me from having a bit of trepidation and while sitting there, silently praying, “Lord keep me in the name of Jesus.” Read more >>

Blue chromis (Chromis cyaneus) belong to the same group of fishes as damselfishes. These unmistakeable, bright reef denizens are very visible despite their tiny size. These fish are shoalers, so out on the reef you can enjoy them flickering around you as you swim along or hang in the water to admire the corals. Read more >>

The recipients are Dereka Bain and Chandira Wright.
With this scholarship, Dermal Distributions Chief Executive Officer and President, Sarah Beek, hopes to raise the quality of estheticians and massage therapists in The Bahamas.
“We have had a successful business within the skin care industry for many years and wanted to give back and help our fellow Bahamians. In time, we are hoping to elevate the level of skin therapists across The Bahamas. Locals and tourists experiencing skin therapy or massage therapy in The Bahamas should experience something that is the highest level - not only compared to the Caribbean, but globally,” said Ms. Beek.
Dermal Distributions is the exclusive distributor of Dermalogica, Bio-Therapeutic, Revitlash, Jane Iredale and Intrinsics in the Caribbean.
Sarah Beek - professional skin therapist for 19 years - will mentor the recipients throughout the program which will include additional training outside of the classroom. Dermal Distributions Chief Financial Officer, Raymond Simpson, expressed how significant the mentoring aspect of the scholarship is to the company. Mr. Simpson said while giving the students products and a scholarship are great, he believes the main focus is mentoring them so that they are prepared for industry.
Recipients also received products to use during their studies.
Ms. Thompson acknowledged that Dermalogica is widely known for its quality skin care products and with BTVI’s reputation for delivering quality education, it came as no surprise when Dermalogica decided to invest in the institution’s students.
“This investment confirms the level of confidence that industry has in our ability to train our students as we prepare them for the world of work. It shows that they have been watching us, that they have seen our graduates at work and they are comfortable endorsing our program,” she stated.
Ms. Thompson noted that initially, only one scholarship was promised, however after meeting with the applicants and hearing about their career goals and how a BTVI education will help them to achieve those goals, the company realized how difficult it was to select only one recipient and awarded two instead.
Ms. Beek said upon completion of the program, opportunity for employment for recipients may become available at Dermalogica or Dermalogica account locations.
