NASSAU, BAHAMAS — As part of its dedication to inspiring future maritime professionals, Disney Cruise Line sponsored this year’s summer camp program at the LJM Maritime Academy in Nassau. More than 40 students, ranging in ages from 12 to 16 years old, were given the chance to learn more about the local and global maritime industry and gain a better understanding of its career opportunities.

During the two-week camp, students explored various aspects of maritime-oriented jobs and learned how traditional STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) subjects apply to the various roles available in the field. The program also builds hands-on skills required for seamanship by including lessons in boat handicraft, navigation, outdoor skills and first aid.  Read more >>

Is the cruise industry responsible for overtourism?

By Francesca Street, CNN

(CNN) — You wake up and eat breakfast on your private balcony, admiring majestic views of the ocean.

You dock in port after port, crisscrossing the Mediterranean -- from the canals of Venice to the red roofs of Dubrovnik and back. Or you travel down the German Rhine or beach-hop in the Caribbean.

At each spot, you spend anywhere from a few hours to a day. Sometimes you don't even get off the boat. When you do, you're part of crowds of tourists, battling to see the views, scrambling to admire the sites.

The cruise ship industry is booming. Ships are getting bigger, better, more exciting and more experience-driven.

At the same time, ports are getting busier and more polluted, and residents are getting angrier.
In 2019, 30 million passengers are expected to cruise, up from 17.8 million a decade earlier.

So what impact are they having on destinations, and what can be done about it?  Read more >>

Damned If You Do; Damned If You Don't:
The Power Debacle

Dear Readers,
In case you are living in a cave (which might be cooler), Nassauvians are not happy! Their power issues have been a huge problem for many years, with consistent outages happening this summer – for some, we hear three to four times a day. To be frank, the situation has seemingly reached an all-time crisis level for the island, but officials have estimated that the challenges, which include wide-spread load shedding, will not end until at least November 2019.
Grand Bahamians know this nightmare, over fifteen years ago, the power company known then as Freeport Power, was in a similar situation. Like their Nassuvian counterparts, residents on GB suffered through constant power outages and ruined appliances while business and residential customers all cried shame and begged for relief. Thankfully their prayers were answered in the form of a privatization deal, which saw a Canadian company, EMERA take the helm; and ever since, Grand Bahama Power Company and its customers have been basking in the limelight of solid and reliable service.

My Experience Judging Miss Bahamas Universe

Miss Bahamas Universe, Tarea Sturrup.

By Rogan Smith

As a judge, this was one of the hardest decisions I ever had to make. There were 11 women in the pageant. Many were not conventional beauties by pageant standards. Some bore tattoos, many were petite, others curvy, but they showed me and the other judges just why they deserved an opportunity to represent The Bahamas on the world stage. All of the women were highly intelligent.

I was also happy to see Bahamian girls of Haitian descent try to win the crown. Many of them talked about the hurdles they had to overcome, particularly the xenophobia and cruel remarks they had to endure as a result of their ancestry. It was quite eye opening.

As this was my first time judging a beauty pageant. I really didn’t know what to expect, but I do admit I had a lot of preconceived notions about the process.  Read more >>

Valentino ‘Scrooge’ Brown

By Hadassah Deleveaux (née Hall)

I found myself sitting in an unfinished portion of a modest house through Lewis Street. My interviewee:  a former gang leader.

Just the two of us.

He was schooled by the streets and well known to police. He was once leader of the Border Boys, a gang I heard about years ago, having grown up over the hill.

From I made contact with Valentino via telephone, I could detect sincerity in whom he has become. When we finally met in person, our conversation revealed that he undoubtedly has a checkered past. Yet through those eyes, I sensed a changed man. Admittedly, that didn’t stop me from having a bit of trepidation and while sitting there, silently praying, “Lord keep me in the name of Jesus.”  Read more >>

In The True Spirit of BASRA!

Dear Readers,
For nearly 50 years, officials of the Bahamas Air Sea Rescue Association of Grand Bahama have hosted an annual beach party at the famed Coral Beach on Grand Bahama Island. What began as a fundraising event to support the organization’s rescue efforts eventually blossomed into the ultimate end of summer beach party. As the event has grown, so too has the community participation and involvement. The event now not only attracts local Grand Bahamians but also participants from Abaco, and New Providence and other family islands.
For decades now, organizers of the event have taken on the increasingly complicated task of coordinating volunteers and securing the necessary donations required to make their work possible. As has been the annual tradition, BASRA’s Volunteer board secured the use of the Coral Beach area (above the high tide water mark) for BASRA’s bar, food tent (rotary) the band and more. Over the last few years the event added TENT sponsorship, as a way to pay for shade, earn corporate funds and provide drinks for the renters. This decision was also made to discourage patrons from bringing their own beverages and encourage the sale of donated products.

Newly Renovated Stoned Crab Opens at Taino Beach
Last week, the business community of Grand Bahama officially helped proprietor Olivia Pagés open her newly revamped Stoned Crab Restaurant and Bar on Taino Beach. The iconic restaurant, with its signature,three-pointed roofs was packed with well-wishers including the Deputy Prime Minister, Peter Turnquest, who is also the MP for the Lucaya area.
Welcoming guests to the event, was Master of Ceremonies, Brenford Christie, well-known attorney for McKinney, Bancroft & Hughes, and Step-Father to the owner.
Bahamian Brewery Expands into a New
Three Acre Warehouse with Retail Location to Open Soon
For more than a decade, the Bahamian Brewery and Beverage Company Limited (BBB) has redefined the beer business in The Bahamas. Since launching in 2008, the company has become known throughout the islands for its signature products brewed in Grand Bahama like Sands, Sands Light, and Sands Pink Radler along with their Bush Crack, High Rock lager, Strong Back stout, Triple B malt and the newest, Sands Passion Radler.
When the company opened its flagship retail store in Grand Bahama, Jimmy’s Wines and Spirits, it was primarily designed to bring those brands to its customers and help promote sales. This proved to be another asset for this growing company. Jimmy’s carries one of the largest inventories of wines and spirits in the country.
Eye-Opening Aquaponics Discovery Experience for GB Summer Campers
Twenty-one young people were part of an Aquaponics Summer Discovery Programme held recently at Sir Jack Hayward High School, where they were introduced to new advances in agricultural science and technology. The students learned about aspects of farm operations and engaging in best practices in aquaponics from experts and trained professionals.

Minister of Agriculture and Marine Resources, the Hon. Michael Pintard, on Friday, August 16, encouraged the summer campers to become a part of the agricultural industry where they could become self-employed, stating: “we know beyond a shadow of a doubt that agriculture and marine resources hold opportunities for decent work for decent pay, as well as ownership.
Social Services Minister Commends Programmes for Focus on Urban Communities
Minister of Social Services and Urban Development, the Hon. Frankie A. Campbell, commended the executives of three urban programmes that operate year-round life and social skills enhancement programmes that cater to residents of the urban communities of New Providence for having the foresight to pool their human and other resources in order to effect positive change within those communities.
Minister Campbell Challenges to Men/Men’s Groups to Serve as Father Figures
CIBC FirstCaribbean placed a special group of young Bahamians on “ice” this summer.
Minister of Social Services and Urban Development, the Hon. Frankie A. Campbell, told executives of a visiting group of male organizations that one of the best ways they can partner with the Ministry to ensure equity and equality for women, and the protection of women across The Bahamas, is if they continue to provide positive influences/programmes geared towards the nation's young men.
“There is a saying: ‘Bend the tree while it is young.’ Another is that ‘it is easier to build a boy, than repair a man.’ Both of those are very wise sayings that would be useless clichés if we do not put them into action," Minister Campbell said.
GBPA Summer Employment Program Empowers GBI Youth
The Grand Bahama Port Authority (GBPA) has conducted an ongoing summer student employment program for many years which provides Grand Bahamian high school and university students with the opportunity to experience real, hands-on work within the corporate world. GBPA began this program with the intent to create a structured environment where young people are able to learn valuable information from top business professionals. The program, which commenced in May and ends in August of each year, includes three, four-week long sessions; ensuring that GBPA includes the highest number of participants possible.

Bahamas Waterkeepers Welcomes Chinese Counterparts for Cultural Exchange

For millennia, all of earth’s living things have depended on water for its survival. Up to 71 percent of the world’s surface is covered in water, it exists in the air, in the soil and even in the human body which is up to 60% water. According to research, however, only 3 percent of the earth’s water supply is drinkable which makes water conservation all the more important.
Already known across the country for its efforts to protect and improve local water systems, Waterkeepers® Bahamas, is part of a global organization dedicated to ensuring that the world’s water supply is protected. As part of its efforts, the group has formed countless partnerships with environmental groups both locally and abroad. Most recently, those partnerships resulted in a multicultural exchange between
Bahamian students and their counterparts in China.

Dermal Distributions has provided Esthetics scholarships to two students to study at the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI). The scholarship will cover application fees, tuition, uniform, books, tools, a Dermalogica product kit and mentorship throughout the program.

The recipients are Dereka Bain and Chandira Wright.

With this scholarship, Dermal Distributions Chief Executive Officer and President, Sarah Beek, hopes to raise the quality of estheticians and massage therapists in The Bahamas.

“We have had a successful business within the skin care industry for many years and wanted to give back and help our fellow Bahamians. In time, we are hoping to elevate the level of skin therapists across The Bahamas. Locals and tourists experiencing skin therapy or massage therapy in The Bahamas should experience something that is the highest level - not only compared to the Caribbean, but globally,” said Ms. Beek.

Dermal Distributions is the exclusive distributor of Dermalogica, Bio-Therapeutic, Revitlash, Jane Iredale and Intrinsics in the Caribbean.

Sarah Beek - professional skin therapist for 19 years - will mentor the recipients throughout the program which will include additional training outside of the classroom. Dermal Distributions Chief Financial Officer, Raymond Simpson, expressed how significant the mentoring aspect of the scholarship is to the company. Mr. Simpson said while giving the students products and a scholarship are great, he believes the main focus is mentoring them so that they are prepared for industry.

Recipients also received products to use during their studies.

Meanwhile, BTVI Associate Vice President of Fund Development, Alicia Thompson, expressed how this donation further solidifies BTVI’s reputation with industry.

Ms. Thompson acknowledged that Dermalogica is widely known for its quality skin care products and with BTVI’s reputation for delivering quality education, it came as no surprise when Dermalogica decided to invest in the institution’s students.

“This investment confirms the level of confidence that industry has in our ability to train our students as we prepare them for the world of work. It shows that they have been watching us, that they have seen our graduates at work and they are comfortable endorsing our program,” she stated.

Ms. Thompson noted that initially, only one scholarship was promised, however after meeting with the applicants and hearing about their career goals and how a BTVI education will help them to achieve those goals, the company realized how difficult it was to select only one recipient and awarded two instead.

Ms. Beek said upon completion of the program, opportunity for employment for recipients may become available at Dermalogica or Dermalogica account locations.
