The African American who moved to Ghana 'to escape US racism'
Academic Obadele Kambon lives with his family in Ghana's capital
Having vowed to quit the US after being the victim of what he believed was a racially motivated arrest by police officers, African American Obadele Kambon relocated to Ghana in 2008 - and has never looked back.
Mr Kambon has now built a successful life in the place that was once at the heart of the slave trade, and enjoys the freedom which, he says, was denied to him in the US, his birthplace.
He says he no longer looks over his shoulder, worrying that police will pull him over or, worse still, kill his son. Read more >>

Could Pre-Employment Marijuana Tests Become a Thing of the Past? Nevada Becomes 1st State to Kiss Them Goodbye
CNN reports that beginning in 2020, employers in the state can no longer refuse to hire a job applicant for failing a marijuana screening test, making it the first state in the country to enforce such a rule. He went on to explain the concept of this tool. “The tool is Excel based, which means you can use it on the computer.”

Hurricane Dorian tore across the Bahamas on Sunday as a historically powerful hurricane, officials said, leaving scenes of devastation in its path.
When the Category 5 hurricane made landfall on Great Abaco Island, east of Miami, on Sunday at 2 p.m., Dorian's maximum sustained winds were 185 mph — an Atlantic hurricane record matched only by a storm that struck the Florida Keys in 1935, the National Hurricane Center said.
Prime Minister Hubert Minnis broke down in tears at a news conference where he said he could only hope that those who refused to evacuate would survive the storm, the Nassau Guardian reported Sunday. Read more >>

Editor’s Note: Abaco, Grand Bahama and the Comeback to Come
The sea of Abaco
On Sept. 8, 1932, the biggest storm ever recorded in Abaco pummeled the island, destroying hundreds of homes and killing 10 people, just enough to land it on page 22 of the Sept. 9 edition of the New York Times.
Today, Hurricane Dorian and its landfall in Abaco and Grand Bahama are on the front page of every newspaper around the world.
That our hearts and minds and attentions are so intensely focused on the events and people in the northwestern Bahamas this week is a testament not just to the power of the Internet but to what this wonderful corner of the world, The Bahamas, has come to mean to so many around the world, in the last eight decades.
The horror of Hurricane Dorian is at the forefront of the news this week, an unholy tempest that has brought devastation to these corners of the 700-island chain of The Bahamas: Abaco and Grand Bahama. Read more >>

Hurricane Dorian death toll will increase
Minister of National Security Marvin Dames speaking with reporters.
The death toll from Hurricane Dorian will increase, Minister of National Security Marvin Dames said today after he revealed that a few children are among the dead.
“I caution Bahamians everywhere that that chances that we find more persons dead, those chances are real,” Dames told reporters outside Cabinet.
“It’s certainly a concern for us. This was a crisis of epic proportions. We want to be responsible; we want to be caring.
“As we report these things we’re taking into account the sensitivity around this…The reality of it all is, unfortunately, we will see more deaths. I can’t see any way out of it.”
Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis said five people were confirmed dead in Abaco yesterday.
When asked about those victims today, Dames said, “Unfortunately, what we’re getting is a few of them are children.
“We’re at the beginning of this. This is a very unfortunate occurrence for us. Maybe the worst that we’ve experienced, certainly in our lifetime.” Read more >>
