“Celebrating the Golden Anniversary of a Vision…Championing the Cause of Children!”.

The stories of successful pediatric heart surgeries and survival because of the generosity The Sir Victor Sassoon (Bahamas) Heart Foundation are many. In fact, to date the Heart Foundation has helped over 4,000 adults and children. This Foundation hopes to help many more.  For fifty years, The Annual Heart Ball has served as the major fund raiser to aid the Sir Victor Sassoon (Bahamas) Heart Foundation. On Saturday, February 15, 2014, The Heart Ball Committee will host the 50th Annual Heart Ball at Melia Nassau Beach Resort, formerly the Sheraton Nassau Beach Resort. The Heart Ball Committee is very excited about this achievement and invites Corporate Bahamas and the public to come and share this historical moment with them.

Under the distinguished patronage of  His Excellency Sir Arthur Foulkes, Governor General and Lady Foulkes and The Right Honourable Perry G. Christie , M.P., Prime Minister and Minister of Finance and Mrs. Christie, the Heart Ball Committee will host the 50th Annual Heart Ball. The theme for the event is, “Celebrating the Golden Anniversary of a Vision…Championing the Cause of Children!”.

The Annual Heart Ball affords attendees an evening filled with glitz, glamour and fun. It’s an opportunity to get dressed-up, look your best and know that your money is well spent. The red carpet will be rolled out welcoming guest to an evening of elegance and grandeur. Floral arrangement provided by Florals Arts will set the tone and atmosphere, shaping the landscape to celebrate life, love and laughter. A five course meal will be served. There will also be live, toe-tapping, body rocking performances by The S-G Band (Soulful Groovers), The Royal Bahamas Police Force Dinner Band and The Royal Bahamas Defense Force Dance Band.  Additionally, Gary “Super” Johnson will provide music to dance the night away.

If that’s not enough, one of the highlights of The Ball is the naming of The Lady Sassoon Golden Heart Awardee. This person would have been selected from of pool of worthy candidates nominated for their humanitarian and heart touching acts, to improve the lives of others.  Deadline for nominations is January 17, 2014.

Guests can win fabulous prizes and surprises as table prizes, raffle prizes or auction items. Up for grabs are: a roundtrip ticket for two to London on Virgin Atlantic, travel for two to the Cayman Island on British Airways, travel for two to Florida on Bahamasair, and hotel stays at British Colonial Hilton and Sandals Emerald Bay. Additionally, there will be fine jewelry provided by local and international designers, excursions with Sea Horse Sailing and Stuart’s Cove, pampering by places such as Lyford Cay Spa, Hollis Cosmetics, Clippendale’s and many more. There will also be dinners to places like Aqua at Melia, Athena’s Café, Van Brugels and much more. There are also gift certificates from places like Logos Bookstore, Fini and many more fine businesses in The Bahamas. There will be Artwork by the late Chan Pratt, Clifford Fernander, Nettica Symonette, and many more artists.

In the midst of all the glitz, glamour and fun, we must remember and recognize the cause for The Annual Heart Ball. The Annual Heart Ball is the major fund raiser hosted by The Heart Ball Committee that aids The Sir Victor Sassoon (Bahamas) Heart Foundation. The Sir Victor Sassoon (Bahamas) Heart Foundation is a non-profit organization, established by Evelyn Lady Sassoon in 1961. In 1963 it was evident that such a charity was needed, as there were many persons in need of heart care, but could not afford it. Additionally, there was a need to raise funds to continue to carry out the mission of The Foundation. As such, in 1965, the first Heart Ball was held to raise fund to repair the hearts of persons in The Bahamas. To date, Annual Heart Ball remains the major fund-raiser for the Heart Foundation to help persons, primarily children, in need of heart care. It is held annually on the Saturday closest to Valentine’s, welcoming family, friends and colleagues to share the moment for a worthy cause.

In the word of the Heart Ball Committee’s Public Relation’s Officer,Ms. Ingrid Sears, “ The Heart Ball Committee is excited as we prepare for the 50th Heart Ball. We are excited that we can carry on the vision of helping to repair the hearts of others. Despite economic and other challenges, The Heart Ball has stood the test of time and proves to be the best Ball in town. For this The Heart Ball is very thankful to our faithful patrons and sponsors and look forward to many more Heart Balls. We are very hopeful that others will join us as we seek to raise funds to save our future, our children”.
In the words of Ms. Nancye Miller, commonly known as Mother Nancye Miller, whose daughter died of an unexpected heart attack, lost her grandson Dale Marche to heart disease, but was fortunate to save another grandson – Deshauun Marche:

“I would tell anyone, The Heart Foundation is life. If others did not support the Heart Foundation, Deshaunn would not have had his surgery. They gave him a chance at life. They gave him life. If Dale’s heart was not deteriorated, there would be two lives saved. I sat home hearing people talking about The Heart Foundation and The Heart Ball. I now see the importance of it and supporting it. I encourage others to support the Heart Foundation”.

The 50th Annual Heart Ball is currently sponsored in part by: Cable Bahamas, Virgin Atlantic, Bahamasair, BTC, John Bull, G & M Appliances, Floral Arts, ZNS, The Salus Project, Pictet Bank, Scotiabank, The Bahamas weekly.com, Bahamaislandsinfo.com, Barefoot Marketing, More 94 FM, Love 97, Island FM, and JCN.

BTVI Students Experience Cultural Awakening

CULTURE - An excited BTVI student raises her hand to ask a question during Mr. Silbert Ferguson’s presentation at Educulture, a museum on West Hill Street.

A few students of The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute recently experienced a cultural awakening when they visited Educulture, a museum on West Hill Street.

According to instructor of one of the institution’s Student Success classes, Archilene Hepburn-O’Brien, the opportunity created a greater awareness of who we are as a people and where we came from. The field trip was not solely for students to view artifacts, but to participate in an experience.

“The trip was to refresh and deepen the understanding of some BTVI students about culture.  In the words of one student, ‘Now I see,’ confirms that the mission was accomplished,” said Ms. Hepburn-O’Brien.

“The preservation of culture demands introspection, retrospection and progression.  That is, first we must look inside ourselves to discover and develop self; then look in the past to see where we came from and then look ahead and plot our course for the future,” she added.

During the visit, many students saw the “goose” for the first time - 10 pounds of pure iron that use to be filled with coal to press clothes.  Also on display were the kerosene lamp, coconut branches that were used to sweep the house or rake the yard and an over-sized brush that was used to scrub wooden floors.

This glimpse of historic practices drew outburst of laughter from the mature students and questions of curiosity from the younger ones.  “Today we simply push a plug in and turn a knob to iron.  Today it is tiles and the Swiffer machine,” noted Ms. Hepburn-O’Brien.

HISTORY – BTVI students listen attentively to co-owner of Educulture, Mr. Silbert Ferguson.   Mr. Ferguson enlightened them on many aspects of Bahamian culture, including Junkanoo, during the presentation at the museum on West Hill Street.

Making the presentation to students was Silbert Ferguson, who owns and manages the museum with his wife, former educator and Junkanoo enthusiast, Arlene Nash-Ferguson. The museum sits on a parcel of land that has been in Mrs. Nash-Ferguson’s family for centuries.  It was initially owned by her uncle, Ivern Bosfield, first chairman of the Masquerade Committee and is named in his honour.

Also during the cultural experience, Mr. Ferguson shared costumes from yesteryear including ones made from rag cloths, newspapers, tissue and sponge (pre-independence).

“The materials used to produce the costumes were interesting and provided a glimpse not only into the culture but the economic state of the black Bahamians at the time.  The costumes of today are superior in size, material, design and creativity which speak volumes to the positive development and transition of culture,” observed Mrs. Hepburn-Obrien.

Additionally, students got the opportunity to design and paste conch shells during the educational and cultural visit.  “It was nothing short of splendor.  If the spirit of culture is to be harnessed and the practices developed and preserved, then every Bahamian must know and play their part,” said the instructor.

TAKING A SHOT – One BTVI student takes a photo of a Junkanoo display on the wall at Educulture.  The field trip was part of the Student Success course.

Office Administration student, Hubert Duncombe said the visit aroused a passion in him.  “I never really was exposed to the depths of Junkanoo, why we do it.  Today’s Junkanoo is far from what it should be, which should be about our freedom,” he stated.

Business Administration student, Donecia Davis added that she believes every Bahamian should see the displays at the museum.  “You must know your history in order to know where you’re going.  Otherwise, what is the point of your existence?” she mused.

The student who is also a waitress at SuperClubs Breezes said she now views Junkanoo differently and is armed with more information to share with guests of the hotel

Honoured by RCI for providing outstanding vacation experience

NASSAU, N.P...(Jan. 25th 2014)…

Sandyport Beaches Resort and Hotel has won the coveted RCI Gold Crown Resort award, the highest of the three RCI designations largely determined by vacationers’ comments. The announcement was made at the award presentation on January 23rd by Minister of Tourism Obie Wilchcombe during a celebratory event at the Sandyport area hotel in Western New Providence.

Minister of Tourism, Obie Wilchcombe said at the presentation that everybody’s efforts count every day in tourism and this major industry honour speaks to that as well as contributing to the overall growth of tourism in The Bahamas.

“It’s a major accomplishment and certainly an achievement,” said the Minister. “It speaks for the brand they have here and the services provided.  It’s a contribution to the overall growth of the tourism industry and more particularly it speaks for the Bahamian quality of service that we emphasize, particularly this year as the Ministry of Tourism celebrates its 50th Anniversary.”

There are only 3 resorts in the Bahamas that are RCI Gold Crown. A select number of RCI affiliated resorts worldwide meet RCI’s requirements for recognition and have earned the RCI Gold Crown Resort award. These resorts have attained high levels of excellence in resort accommodations, hospitality and member experience ratings as measured by RCI.

Gordon Gurnik, president of RCI said he was thrilled to recognize those achieving Gold Crown designation.
“We are thrilled to recognize those who have attained this designation and continue to work to offer top vacation destinations to our 3.7 million members worldwide.”

Vernon Moss, the property general manager said the Gold Crown award is a success for the management and staff.

“I am blessed with the best staff who love working here and who love meeting and helping the guests.  Every day they give gold-standard service across the board, whether in housekeeping, maintenance or service, that is why we have this award,” said Mr. Moss.

“We get lots of repeat business and plenty of great guest comments on Tripadvisor which is why we are currently ranked fourth in Nassau for guest satisfaction.”  Tripadvisor is a leading website that offers trusted reviews from real travelers.

The Sandyport Beaches Resort and Hotel is on the canal front in the upscale residential and busy commercial community of the Sandyport Marina Village on West Bay Street.  Seventy two, attractive hotel rooms, studios, one, two and three bedroom suites with kitchen and living room ensure holiday and business travelers immediate home comfort needs are met, including Wi-Fi.  The complex includes two ocean beaches, lagoon beach, and one of only three resort lagoon pools worldwide.  Peace and quiet but with the built-in Olde Towne at Sandyport shops and restaurants and the casino and nightlife of Cable Beach, nearby.

THE FIGHT FOR EVERY HEARTBEAT……JOINT TASK FORCE TO SAVE A HEART

Patients, parents, HBC & Heart Foundation

Cliché, though it may be, heart disease remains the number one killer of persons around the world. Typically when you hear of a fight it’s between two persons. However, the fight against heart disease is one where many are battling this disease with as many aids as possible. The aids include, doctor’s nurses, hospitals, support staff, family support, volunteers, support groups, prayers and necessary financial resources. For many, in particular children, a lack of financial support for heart care can lead to immediate death. Recently, some parents and children joined forces with The Heart Ball Committee and The Heart Foundation, in both Nassau and Grand Bahama to take a stand against heart disease in children and fight for the life of a child.  They also took a stand to show their appreciation for the kindness afforded them and their families, in an effort to encourage others to join them.

For over fifty years, The Sir Victor Sassoon (Bahamas) Heart Foundation has helped to repair the hearts of persons in The Bahamas. Over 4,000 persons have benefitted from the generosity of The Heart Foundation. However, it could not be done without the aid of The Heart Ball Committee. The Heart Ball Committee is a committee of volunteers who annually plan and host the Heart Ball, to help to raise funds to repair the arts of other, mainly children. The year 2104 marks the 50th Anniversary of the Annual Heart Ball. The Annual Heart Ball has served as the main fundraiser to aid The Heart Foundation for 50 years.  It is the hope of the Committee, that together with the public’s assistance, they will host many more Heart Balls.

Altonese Saunders with her mother Roselyn Saunders

One of the parents present was Ms. Roselyn Saunders, the mother of 1 year old, Altonese Saunders- Rolle. Altonese was diagnosed with holes in her heart. The technical terms for what she had are : a PDA (Patent Ductus Arterious) and VSD (Ventricular Septal Defect). She was put on medication to treat the condition, in hopes that the body would repair itself. She was also referred to the pediatric clinic at the Princess Margaret Hospital. Due to the fact that Altonese’ body was not self-correcting, she needed surgery to treat the two problems, if she was to live. Ms. Saunders did not have resources on hand for Altonese to have corrective surgery locally or abroad. Thanks to the generosity of The Sir Victor Sassoon (Bahamas) Heart Foundation, Altonese was able to have surgery in March of 2013 at Princess Margaret Hospital for the PDA. She was then referred to Joe Dimaggio’s Children Hospital   to have a procedure done to correct the VSD, in September 2013.

In the words of Ms. Saunders’ who is very grateful to see her baby very happy and moving around, as if nothing was ever wrong:

“I am so thankful that there is a foundation such as The Heart Foundation; without them, my baby would not have gotten the help that she did. I could not find that money she would have needed for the surgery. I would like to encourage the public to help the Heart Foundation and its members with the work that they are doing for our kids. To the public – the money all goes towards the kids”.

Freeport parents & children.

The 50th Annual Heart Ball will be held on Saturday, February 15, 2014 at Melia Nassau Beach, formerly known as Sheraton Nassau Beach Resort. Tickets for regular seating is $250 per persons. Platinum seating is also available. The proceeds of this event will help to repair the hearts of children, like Altonese, who are diagnosed at birth with heart disease.

BTVI Holds Financial Fitness Check-up

FINANCIAL WELLNESS – Edward Strachan, Manager of Royal Bank of Canada’s Mortgage Centre, speaks to BTVI staff, faculty and students about their finances during a Financial Wellness seminar.  Shown from left to right are:  Jevon Butler, Business Development Manager, Cash N’ Go; Sonia Rahming, Senior Accounts Officer, Commonwealth Bank and Tanya Pinder-Carey, Credit Officer, Commonwealth Bank

Staff, faculty and students of The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI) recently gained a wealth of knowledge intended to put them on the road to financial success.

The seminar was a financial wellness check-up with representation from leading banks, insurance and credit union companies.

BTVI’s coordinator of Student Affairs, Racquel Bethel underscored the importance of fiscal prudence.  “It is paramount; hence such a seminar would prove to be of great value in these already economically-challenging times.  It is our hope to expose our BTVI family to the benefits of financial planning and get them on the right path for the new  year,” she said.

Lively and informative presentations were made on budgeting, savings, insurance and retirement planning by representatives of Commonwealth Bank, Royal Bank, the Teachers and Salaried Workers Cooperative Credit Union, FamGuard Group of Companies and Cash N’ Go, a subsidiary of the Bahamas Assurance Financial (BAF) Global  Group Ltd.

One BTVI employee, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the seminar changed her mindset.

“Every month I buy a new shade of lipstick,” she confessed.  “Instead of spending $50 on MAC makeup, I’ll save it,” she resolved.

“They taught me life lessons about budgeting.  They were realistic.  They said how Bahamians work from paycheck to paycheck.  I’m going to hike up my savings because you never know what may happen,” said the 24-year-old.

GETTING FISCALLY FIT - Tanya Pinder-Carey, Credit Officer (l) and Sonia Rahming, Senior Accounts Officer, both of Commonwealth Bank, share financial advice with staff, faculty and students of BTVI during a recent Financial Wellness seminar.  Shown to the far left is Jevon Butler, Business Development Manager of Cash N’ Go, a subsidiary of Bahamas Assurance Financial (BAF) Global Group Ltd.

Meanwhile, Tanya Pinder-Carey, a Credit Officer at Commonwealth Bank , noted that the average Bahamian only has about one month’s salary available to live on in the event of termination.  She underscored the importance of saving, while Wesley Percentie, Senior Wealth Manager at FamGuard Group of Companies encouraged attendees to not live above their means and save towards retirement.

“You must be prudent in savings and investment practices.  National insurance is not sufficient following retirement.  Save from now. Now is the time to begin saving,” stressed Mr. Percentie.

Additionally, Jevon Butler, Business Development Manager of Cash N’ Go noted that in order to invest it requires sacrifice.   “A man is a slave to his lender.  Don’t allow emotions to affect your money,” he advised.

Mr. Butler further advised that long-term investments should not be based on today’s salary as there may be interruptions to employment including retirement or termination.  “Spend on long-term expenditures, what you can still pay in 20 years,” he recommended.

Several attendees described the panelists as “real” in their advice and afterwards took the time to meet one-on-one with representatives to receive additional information in their quest for fiscal fitness.

Grammy Award Winning, Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Award Winner and 2 Billboard Award Winner, Rik Carey is expected to perform at the 50th Annual Heart Ball

The 2013/ 2014 Heart Ball Committee presents the 50th Annual Heart Ball, under the theme “Celebrating the Golden Anniversary of a Vision….Championing the Cause of Children!”, an entertaining and exciting fundraiser to benefit the Sir Victor Sassoon (Bahamas) Heart Foundation.  Funds donated to The Heart Foundation help to repair the hearts of children in The Bahamas.

On Saturday February 15, 2014, the 50th Annual Heart Ball is set to take place at Melia Nassau Beach Resort and will feature a performance by Grammy Award Winning Artist, Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Award Winner and 2 time Billboard Winner, Mr. Rik Carey. Mr. Carey is a Bahamian artist, music producer, song writer, proprietor and drummer. He is best known for his lead vocals in Baha-Men. As an up and coming artist, his art pieces have also been on display throughout The Bahamas. In addition to Mr. Carey’s performance, there will be performances by the S-G Band, The RBPF Pop Band and the RBDF Dance Band.

Tickets for the event start at $250 per person and covers a five course meal, great entertainment, an opportunity to dance the night away and opportunities to win: a door prize, a table prize, a raffle prize and possibly an auction item. Up for grabs are: a roundtrip ticket for two to London on Virgin Atlantic, travel for two to the Cayman Island on British Airways along with accommodations at the Westin, travel for two to Florida on Bahamasair, and many more travel excursions. There will be opportuniteies to win pampering atplaces such as Lyford Cay Spa, Hollis Cosmetics, Clippendale’s and others. There will also be dinners to places like Aqua at Melia, Athena’s Café, Van Brugels and much more.  There will also be Artwork by the late Chan Pratt, Clifford Fernander, Nettica Symonette, Shakila Stubbs, an hibiscus photo by Portia Nottage and many more well known artists. Lastly, but not least, there will also be fine jewelry up for grabs such as: a LuiCairi Men’s Watch, a Woman’s Topaz necklace set from Venetian Jeweler’s, an oyster pearl by A Divine Design, and  much more.

According to Portia Nottage, Heart Ball Committee Co-Chair, “ We are proud to host the 50th Heart Ball. We want people to come and enjoy an evening filled with glitz, glamour and fun. It’s an opportunity to get dressed-up, look your best and know that your money is well spent. The donations given, in terms of paying for a ticket to attend The Ball, helps to save lives. It’s money well spent.”

The number of children in need of urgent heart care increases daily. Whilst many children are monitored by doctors in hopes that their condition may improve or does not deteriorate, others simply cannot wait for care; they need urgent care. Sadly, many babies are born with heart disease, and need urgent care immediately after birth. In most situations, this is not something the parents or guardians expected or planned for mentally, emotionally, or financially. At present there are over five patients awaiting heart surgeries and need urgent care. One surgery can cost over $100,000. Limited income does not help a parent whose child need surgery locally or abroad; it can be very challenging to accept you can’t help the one you love. The help of others can make a difference.

According to Mr. Rik Carey, “ I  love what I do. I am driven by my work in all forms. I am happy to help save a child’s life. I wish to encourage others to join us in the fight to save a child’s life”.

The 50th Annual Heart Ball is currently sponsored in part by: Cable Bahamas, Virgin Atlantic, Bahamasair, BTC, John Bull, G & M Appliances, Floral Arts, ZNS, The Salus Project, Pictet Bank, Scotiabank, The Bahamas weekly.com, Bahamaislandsinfo.com, Barefoot Marketing, More 94 FM, Love 97, Island FM, and JCN.

To purchase tickets to attend the 50th Heart Ball, to purchase an ad in the commemorative booklet, or to make or donation to The Heart Foundation, please call 327-0806. Your support can mean the difference between life or death of a child.

EVENTS FOR HEART MONTH

25% of all deaths in the Bahamas were directly related to heart disease, according to The Department of Statistics in 2009.  Today, heart disease remains the major cause of death in The Bahamas. It is also the main cause of death around the world.

February is celebrated annually as Heart Month. The year 2014 marks the anniversary of the 50th Heart Ball. The Sir Victor Sassoon (Bahamas) Heart Foundation and The Bahamas Heart Association want you to get involved, help to save a life, and to keep your heart healthy.

The Sir Victor Sassoon (Bahamas) Heart Foundation is a non-profit entity, established in 1961 by Evelyn, Lady Sassoon, that helps to repair the hearts of children in The Bahamas. The Heart Ball Committee is the fundraising arm of The Heart Foundation; it consists of a group of dedicated volunteers who help to raise funds to repair children’s hearts. The Heart Ball Committee has hosted the Annual Heart Ball from 1965, as the main fundraiser to aid the Heart Foundation. To date, over 4,000 people have benefitted from the generosity of The Heart Foundation.

The Heart Foundation works along with The Bahamas Heart Association to educate and inform the public about living heart healthy lifestyles. The Bahamas Heart Association comprises of volunteers who provide their time and services to the following goals:

2. Advises the public through the media of all aspects of heart disease, risk factors and preventative care. Speakers and educational material are available to schools, youth groups, service clubs and other public meetings.

The Bahamas Heart Association, The Heart Foundation, with the aid of the Heart Ball Committee and sponsors, have jointly scheduled several events during heart month to create awareness of heart disease, to help persons live heart healthy lifestyles and to help raise funds to repair children’s hearts.  The public is invited to attend these events.

According to Mrs. Thelma Johnson, President of the Bahamas Heart Association,

“February is Hearth month. It’s a time to embrace love and life. It’s a time to take care of matters of the heart. We want to encourage the public to help us repair the hearts of children. We also want to encourage the public to learn how to live heart healthy and protect their hearts. Heart disease does not discriminate; so we must all take a proactive approach to heart care through education and funding”.

According to the PR Officer for the Heart Ball Committee, Ms. Ingrid Sears, “I want to encourage the public to support Heart Month and The Heart Foundation. The year 2014 marks the 50th Anniversary of The Annual Heart Ball. This year’s Ball promises to be an evening filled with glitz, glamour and fun. By adding a live red carpet and results show, Cable Bahamas and the 242 Untapped team are creating an environment that allows guests and contestants to realize they don’t have to go to Hollywood to shine and feel special,” says Huyler. “I am extremely grateful for a part of movement that celebrates all we as a people have to offer and says ‘look out world, The Bahamas is here!’”.

Finalists Anna Calixte, Althea Pinder and Dominyc Rolle vie for $5000 in cash and prizes and recording contract.

Judges tasked with the final decision include producer/coach Chris Roberts, international worship leader and recording artist Nadene Moss, and singer/songwriter Jonathan ‘Jonny’ Farrington. Davrielle Burrows will cohost the finale along with Vincent ‘V-Mac’ McDonald of Elevation Records, who wears several hats as host, director and creator of the show.

I am excited to see how many people have inquired about tickets to attend the event and support their favorite contestant,” said V-Mac. “This season has been amazing and so have the contestants. They really delivered and took it to a new level. I especially have to say Freeport has been supporting their finalist, the church members here in Nassau have been backing there finalists so it’s going to be a tight race. Whether it’s Anna Calixte from Freeport, Dominyc Rolle or Anna Calixte, I am looking forward to working with them and helping define their gift as the next Bahamian gospel superstar and new member of Elevation Records.”
