BAHAMAS MAKES CENTERFIELD APPEARANCE AT HUGE MIAMI DOLPHINS GAME
Bahamas PM to announce a Grand Prize Trip  for a lucky winner during Dolphins vs Jets NFL Game Sunday December 29

FORT LAUDERDAE, FL - December 27, 2013  - The Islands Of The Bahamas will receive prominence during the Miami Dolphins  vs New York Jets Game, this Sunday, December 29th, at Dolphin Stadium, Miami Gardens, FL., when The Prime Minister of The Bahamas, the Honourable, Perry G. Christie,  is expected to make the announcement of a Grand Prize trip to his island nation, at half time from Center Field.

The promotional opportunity to take place at Sunday’s huge game is a part of the tactical marketing efforts of The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, in their continuous drive to promote Tourism to the archipelagic chain of 700 Islands - the closest destination to the U.S. Coastline, only 55 miles away at the nearest point.

The BMOT’s Sports Tourism Department, over the past few months have been aggressive in deploying  a strategic plan including impactful initiatives aligning themselves with major athletic brands including organizations such as The Miami Dolphins, to significantly increase exposure for 16 of their country's branded Islands with infrastructure supporting the Tourism industry.

As a result of the contractual partnership between The Bahamas and The Dolphins organization,  The Bahamas will receive maximized visibility at the much touted NFL Game this Sunday, Dolphins vs the New York Jets, which is expected to be one of the biggest of the season.

In addition to The Bahamian Prime Minister’s appearance on Dolphin’s center field, thousands of NFL fans at Sunday’s game will be given the opportunity to experience Bahamas domination on the 100 level of the Dolphin’s Stadium.  The pageantry on the 100 level includes the wrapping of an entire area including walls and pillars of Bahamas themed posters including the "Behold" posters.

The themed area of the stadium, “Bahamas Bash” also features cultural Bahamas domination with brightly colored benches and tables duplicating the colors of the petals of the Bahamas logo as well as Bahamian music and "Bahama Mama" drinks available at the bar.

Following Sunday’s game information is expected to be released on an upcoming Dan Marino and Dolphins Legends Weekend in The Bahamas,  Spring of 2014.

A delegation of Bahamas Cabinet Ministers is expected to be in attendance with The Bahamas Prime Minister at Sunday’s Game.  The Minister of Tourism, the Hon. Obie Wilchcombe and Minister of  Sports the Hon. Dr. Danny Johnson are among the delegation which also includes Ministers the  Hon. Michael Halkitis, Hon. Bernard Nottage and Hon. Glenys Hanna Martin.

Bahamas industry partners working with them in their Dolphin initiatives include The Grand Lucayan Resort and Pelican Bay Resort, Grand Bahama along with Bahamasair, The Bahamas' flag carrier.

(Nassau, The Bahamas)… An international pop princess’ patriotic rendition of a national anthem is being hailed as the most inspirational song for 2013, according to a nationally syndicated Caribbean radio show.

Teen sensation Angelique Sabrina’s version of March on Bahamaland, the national anthem of The Bahamas, took her completely away from her high energy singles Stop Sign and Pull Up when it released as the country was at the height of last year’s 40th Independence Day celebrations. It also came about as she was named the face for Cable Bahamas.

For Elevation Records and 242Untapped

(Nassau, The Bahamas)… It’s a new season, there’s a new cohost and a new season is about to launch as judges seek The Bahamas’ next “gospel recording superstar” with 242Untapped.  Returning are judges producer/coach Chris Roberts, international worship leader and recording artist Nadene Moss, singer/songwriter Jonathan ‘Jonny’ Farrington and Vincent ‘V-Mac’ McDonald of Elevation Records who wears several hats as host, director and creator of the show.

Scores auditioned with about 100 getting callbacks. Their journey from the initial audition to belting it out for the top spot will begin airing on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at 8 p.m on Cable 12. The show’s website www.242untapped.com is also full of surprises as well as a video extras.

Christopher Roberts, Nadene Moss and Jonny Farrington return as judges for 242Untapped

Viewers are not being told if there will be an appearance from last year’s winner Shenique Thurston whose powerhouse vocals continued to win over fans following the contest as she travelled the country and found her single Give Him Praise in heavy rotation on radio. It was the tenth most requested song for 2013 on a local radio station, which the top 20 list included four other Elevation Records artists.

If that weren’t enough testament of the show’s success, several of the runners-up, including Davian Chase and Malikah Pinder headlined their own concerts or were featured artists at some of the biggest gospel events of 2013.

As for the biggest change of the show, that comes with Davrielle Burrows being named cohost.

V-Mac and new 242Untapped cohost Davrielle Burrows

“Davrielle is the daughter of Dave ‘The Ruffneck Pastor’ Burrows but she comes with her own claim to fame,” explained V-Mac. “She has been behind the scenes at some major youth and gospel related events, plus she’s an author and an entrepreneur. She also has a personality that meshed well with the cast and crew and we are excited to have her on board. I know I am glad she’s joined because because that means she gets to do some of the cohosting, which gives me more time to fine tune what we’ve got going on behind the scenes. Overall, though, we have a great team this season and some talent that is sure to keep people watching.”

Church Pays Students' Tuition

GOOD SAMARITAN– The congregants of the Church of God of Prophecy, Seven Hills, have continued to pay the tuition of members who attend post-secondary institutions over the past 21 years.  One recent recipient is Heidi’Jo Meyer, a 2013 graduate of North Andros High School, who joins 10 others at BTVI.

Being thy brother’s keeper has taken on new meaning at the Church of God of Prophecy, Seven Hills, as Senior Pastor, Bishop Clarence N. Williams recently walked into The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI) and paid the full tuition and fees for members who are students.

Presently, there are 11 students from the church attending BTVI, but for the past 21 years, the church has sponsored scores of members who attend BTVI through its tithing account.  Recipients are expected to pass each of their courses with at least a ‘C’.

“It is a part of our God-given mandate to assist the congregants.  It is scripturally-based.  We even help with the payment of The Bahamas Junior Certificate (BJC) and The Bahamas General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE) exams. We also buy books,” said Bishop Williams.

Bishop Williams has sought no publicity on what he and the congregation have done over the past two decades; however, once approached, he was quick to recognize the value of the Good Samaritan gesture.

“I’ve seen the benefits.  I see BTVI directly related to the employment of The Bahamas and as a mechanism for anti-crime fighting,” noted Bishop Williams, who founded the church over 25 years ago.

He was proud to note that some of his members who attended BTVI have gone on to become plumbers, electricians, masons, construction workers, carpenters and office managers among other vocations.

NEW STUDENT – Heidi’Jo Meyer, who began studies in Office Administrative at BTVI this semester, listens attentively as Registrar, Ms. Samara Sands explains important information.  Heidi’Jo has had her full tuition and fees paid for by the congregants of the Church of God of Prophecy, Seven Hills.

One of this semester’s recipients is Heidi’Jo Meyer, a 17-year-old from Nicholls Town, Andros.  She has begun studies towards an Associate of Applied Science degree in Office Administration and has expressed her gratitude to the church family.

“It’s a privilege.  All I can do is my part, making my sponsor proud.  I want to go above and beyond the passing grade,” said Heidi’Jo who graduated from North Andros High with a 3.1 cumulative GPA.

The very soft-spoken Heidi’Jo added that having done her research of post-secondary institutions in New Providence, BTVI is the best fit for her.

“Because I grew up on the island, I wanted to be in a close-knit community. I’m quite content and excited,” she said.

Meanwhile, Bishop Williams who is also a Chartered Accountant and Public Accountant, said $6000 was the highest amount the church has paid to BTVI for a semester.  He is adamant that, “All Pentecostal churches should be involved in post-secondary academic pursuits.”

Questioned as to those who may have decided to join his church simply for the outpouring of financial support, Bishop Williams responded: “It’s not a significant factor.  We can absolve that without any difficulty.  We don’t even mind because it’s one person not walking the streets or contributing to crime.”

Packer is the Think Like A Man producer whose credits also include the upcoming Think Like A Man Too, Stomp The Yard, This Christmas, Takers, Three Can Play That Game and Obsessed. His new film Ride Along starring Ice Cube, Kevin Hart and John Leguizamo hits theaters on January 17, 2014. At the same time, it showcases the beauty of our islands on the big screen to potential tourists and investors. Over the years we’ve had success from many major motion pictures such as Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Too, Pirates of The Caribbean, James Bond and so many other blockbuster hits. Mr. Packer’s success fits right into that legacy and we look forward to working with him and his team.”

Bahamas Consul General’s Office Atlanta, Georgia

(Atlanta, Georgia)… His Excellency the Right Hon. Perry Gladstone Christie will be the fourth person from The Commonwealth of The Bahamas to be inducted on the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame. The induction is set for Friday, January 24, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site in Atlanta, Georgia. He will also attend the Trumpet Awards the following night.

Bahamians already honored at the center include the ‘Father of the Nation’ and first Prime Minister the late Sir Lyden Oscar Pindling, clergyman Neil Ellis and pioneering actor Sir Sidney Poitier, who also serves as Ambassador to Japan for The Bahamas.  Confirmed to attend the ceremony will be Bahamian Minister of Tourism, Hon. Obie Wilchcombe and Minster of Investments, Hon. Khaalis Rolle.

Christie will be one of 10 new inductees to have their footprints immortalized at the site which was created in 2004 by Xernona Clayton, founder and executive producer of the legendary Trumpet Awards. The walk recognizes “the foot soldiers of justice who sacrificed and struggled to make equality a reality for all”. This year’s additional honorees include Bishop John Hurst Adams, The Honorable Roy Barnes, Dr. John Carlos, Dr. Tommie Smith, Dr. Norman C. Frances, Harry E. Johnson, Sr., Representative Calvin Smyre, Thomas N. Todd and Rev. Jasper W. Williams, Jr.

Ms. Clayton stated: “This walk of fame tells a phenomenal story about the legacy of this nation.  It is a permanent testimony to those who have dedicated themselves to progress of our people and to this nation. Many of the shoes we use in the display remain on exhibition within the Visitors Center for those who visit the King Complex.”

Randy E. Rolle, Consul General to The Bahamas for Atlanta and surrounding jurisdiction says that it is a poignant moment for the nation and region.

“Atlanta has a large Caribbean diaspora and it is certainly a honor for us to have a second Prime Minister of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas is being recognized,” he said. “We invite Bahamians in the area to join us as we celebrate this historic occasion. In fact, we have a delegation of 50 Bahamian youths ranging in age from 7 to 17 making up the Urban Renewal Band who will witness this event first hand, as they are also performing. I understand most of them got a passport for the first time just to be able to travel and participate with us in Atlanta. They will be among the first to see Prime Minister Christie’s footsteps cemented amongst other icons. It is truly a proud moment in our nation’s history.”

BTVI to Facilitate Course in Berry Islands

EAGER MINDS – Students of R. N. Gomez All Age School in Exuma listen attentively to BTVI’s Dean of Construction Trades, Alexander Darville, as be briefs them on an upcoming 16-week General Maintenance course.

A group of 20 young men are about to benefit from a 16-week General Maintenance course as The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute  (BTVI) spreads its wings to the Berry Islands.

The ninth through 12thgraders of R. N. Gomez All Age School, along with one adult, will be exposed to the fundamentals of carpentry, plumbing, tiling and electrical installation. The course will be conducted each Friday evening and Saturday, spanning a 10-hour period per weekend.

Principal, Brian Williams recognized a dearth of technical subjects at the school and thought it important to work in conjunction with BTVI.  “We’re trying to do so much here, but manpower is limited.  The youth are excited and we’re excited to enter this partnership with BTVI,” he said.

BTVI previously conducted the same course in Harbour Island, Cat Island, Andros and Exuma.   Some distance learning is involved as a few parts of the theory will be delivered by BTVI instructors via Skype.

Vice-Principal, Christine Saunders, revealed that the school has been attempting to introduce such a program for over a decade.  “I’ve seen so many young men fall through the cracks. They left school and just hung around, so this is a dream come true,” she exclaimed.

WORKSHOP – BTVI’s Dean of Construction Trades, Alexander Darville, recently conducted a workshop for facilitators of a General Maintenance course mainly for youth of the Berry Islands.   He is shown here with (l-r) Terran Winder, carpentry; Ivan Bridgewater, plumbing and Denise Carey, tiling. Missing is Godfrey Francis, electrical installation.

One of the students, Robert Gibson, is thrilled about the course to begin on January 24th.  “I want to be a police, but I’m interested in electrical work.  My daddy and I are always doing electrical stuff. We fix lights, install air conditions and ceiling fans,” he stated.

His peer, Marcus Knowles, said he likes construction and was introduced to it by his father who is a contractor.  “I’ve been on jobs with him and can install doors, do crown molding, masonry and put up plywood,” said the Head Boy.

“In life, it may come a time for me to be able to tile myself or if I have to fix a door, I can do it without paying someone $100.  I want to be self-sufficient,” said the 16-year-old.

WORKSHOP – BTVI’s Dean of Construction Trades, Alexander Darville, recently conducted a workshop for facilitators of a General Maintenance course mainly for youth of the Berry Islands.   Seen here are Ivan Bridgewater, plumbing and Denise Carey, tiling.  Other facilitators are Godfrey Francis, electrical installation and Terran Winder, carpentry .

Meanwhile, BTVI’s Dean of Construction Trades, Alexander Darville, recently conducted a workshop for facilitators, all of whom are residents of the Berry Islands and were selected based on their expertise in their respective fields.  Terran Winder will teach carpentry, Godfrey Francis, electrical installation; Denise Carey, tiling and Ivan Bridgewater, plumbing.

During that workshop on the island, facilitators were introduced to the online library, EBSCO Host, BTVI’s portal for the input of grades and attendance, and the website for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

Mr. Darville expressed the need for technical education.  “Having grown up in Briland, I understand.  Also, it helps to keep some of the men on the island.  Multiple disciplines are in the course and on the island, you have to be a multi-tasker.”

Additionally, funding the course is The Berry Island Association.  President, William Kalis said it’s one way of contributing to the community.

PARTNERSHIP – BTVI will be facilitating a General Maintenance course for young men in the Berry Islands, which includes carpentry, tiling, plumbing and electrical installation.  Shown here are: BTVI’s Dean of Construction Trades, Alexander Darville; R. N. Gomez All Age School’s principal, Brian Williams and President of The Berry Islands Association, William Kalis. The association is funding the 16-week course.

“Instead of sending one student for an annual course, we decided to do a shorter course, having a number of them exposed to what’s possible and to see if they have an affinity for carpentry or plumbing or electrical,” said Mr. Kalis who has lived on the island for 15 years.

“I saw students coming out of school who were good with their hands, but it was trial and error.  They could benefit from such schooling.  These kids, we need to get them jobs.  If they all go to Nassau, the community dies. The answer is through education. That’s the only way,” he noted.
