Microsoft Japan Experimented With 4-Day Work Weeks to Combat Overwork. The Results Were Pretty Incredible.

Working longer hours doesn't mean you'll get more done. But you don't always have a choice -- especially if your work culture demands that you show up early and stay late.

Nowhere is this felt more acutely than by Japanese employees. The country is known for some of the longest working hours in the world. Almost a quarter of Japanese companies require employees to work more than 80 hours of overtime a month, a 2016 government study found. Japanese even has the term "karoshi," which translates to "death by overwork."  Read more >>

After her mother’s sudden death, Catherine Kelly felt the call of the sea. She was in her 20s and had been working as a geographer in London away from her native Ireland. She spent a year in Dublin with her family, then accepted an academic position on the west coast, near Westport in County Mayo. “I thought: ‘I need to go and get my head cleared in this place, to be blown away by the wind and nature.”

Kelly bought a little house in a remote area and surfed, swam and walked a three-mile-long beach twice a day. “I guess the five or six years that I spent there on the wild Atlantic coast just healed me, really.”  Read more >>

Haitians In The Bahamas Are Getting Rounded Up And Deported Two Months After Surviving Hurricane Dorian

Yvener Isma, and his girlfriend, Diana, outside of the Kendal G.L Isaacs National Gymnasium complex in Nassau, which is being used as the primary government shelter for people displaced by Hurricane Dorian.

By Brianna Sacks

GREAT ABACO, The Bahamas — Yvener Isma keeps telling himself, “if the storm didn’t break me, this won’t break me,” but it’s getting harder and harder to believe. He feels like he’s dying inside, slowly, and he blames his government.

Nearly two months ago, the 27-year-old was clinging to a tree as Hurricane Dorian battered the Bahamas, holding his girlfriend, Diana, as floods and winds propelled shipping containers straight into them. The couple made it out of Marsh Harbour “by the grace of God,” but not before Diana — who only wanted her first name used — broke her wrist, twisted her ankle, and tore a bone-deep hole in her shin. The 19-year-old from Haiti is still healing, but her injuries are the least of her worries.  Read more >>

“Music stimulates my mind. It takes me places where my money can’t take me.”  Glennardo “Mystro” Miller.

By Hadassah Deleveaux (née Hall)

The highlight of my chat with Glennardo “Mystro” Miller was listening to his rich,  baritone voice as he strummed his guitar under a guinep tree through Cameron Street.

Cameron Street is off Baillou Hill Road in the historic Grants Town area.

Not long after I drove through the corner, I heard the chiming bells of the nearby St. Agnes Anglican Church as the tune of a beautiful hymn rang through the air.  It was an indication I was on time for our midday meeting.  Read more >>

Caribbean Hotel Room Rates Are Getting Lower

Rates across the region are getting lower after months of occupancy declines in the Caribbean, according to STR.

By Rico Louw

It was bound to happen.

After six straight months of occupancy declines in the Caribbean, the region’s hotel room rates were down in year-over-year comparisons for the first time in 2019.

Compared with September 2018, Caribbean hotel occupancy dropped 6.2 percent as supply jumped 3.3 percent and demand fell 3.1 percent, which was likely due to the effects of Hurricane Dorian and the lingering perception following the hurricane.

During previous months this year, Caribbean hoteliers showed their pricing confidence by continuing to raise average daily rate (ADR) even with lower occupancy levels.

That changed, however, in September with a 3.0 percent decrease in ADR.  Read more >>

Friends of the Environment - Moving Forward with Hope

November 2019 and Hopeful...
Hi Friends,

Dorian has finally left our shores, but its effects remain. While the tasks ahead of our island community are daunting, amidst the challenges of getting by in daily life we are positive that the resilience of our residents and the support of our networks will see us through. In the middle of it all, we can not forget our environment - the jewel that supports our economy and way of life. These next stages of cleaning, rebuilding, and restoration are key. We choose to see the silver lining in the opportunity we've been given to incorporate more sustainable development practices in the future of Abaco.

FRIENDS will be doing a lot of planning in the near future, and we will keep you posted along the way. Along with plans for rebuilding our offices, our work plan and environmental education curriculum will be revisited so as to adapt to the changing needs of the environment in Abaco.

The generosity and opportunities are abounding. We are grateful for all of you, our FRIENDS' family, for reaching out with concern and support. Because of you we are committed, we will rebuild and we will be stronger.

Thank you for helping us get through, it's because of you that we are hopeful.

All the best,
Cha
ON THE GROUND UPDATES

Despite Dorian, and because of, FRIENDS has acquired many new partners. We have met some amazing people doing good for our communities and environment through it all, and would like to take this opportunity to highlight them and their work.
NGO's lending support

Since our last email, the relief group Samaritan's Purse has become resident at the Kenyon Centre, while they assist with the restoration of nearby communities. They have followed up on the great work done by Team Rubicon and will continue helping with cleaning the site and repairs at the Centre, including most recently mucking out our office to make it accessible to salvage what we can. Once we were able to begin salvaging, we had help from All Hands and Hearts, another NGO on the ground, who were essential in helping us secure our snorkel gear. We are extremely grateful for them, and ALL the relief groups who have given tirelessly to our island.

The above photo is of a snake that the Samaritans Purse team freed from the bent metal roof beam. They also swept out many frogs although there were still a lot of tadpoles swimming in the rain filled bins of snorkel gear (that have since been cleaned and saved)

YachtAid Global

FRIENDS has partnered with YachtAid Global (YAG), a California based nonprofit organization dedicated to disaster relief, conservation, and humanitarian work. In response to Hurricane Dorian relief efforts in Abaco, YAG has donated essential supplies to Abaco schools that are currently operational, in Sandy Point, Cherokee, Crossing Rocks, and Green Turtle Cay. FRIENDS along with our partners from the Bahamas Marine Mammal Research Organization (BMMRO) helped facilitate this connection with teachers from these schools. We, alongside members of YAG team, delivered the supplies that arrived on a yacht into South Abaco. The supplies included iPads, laptops, craft materials, projectors and more. Our staff was very happy to connect with some students from summer camp during these visits who were thrilled to receive these supplies for their school year. Thank you YachtAid Global for investing in the children of Abaco!

SeaLegacy

SeaLegacy is a nonprofit organization co-founded by Cristina Mittermeier and Paul Nicklen in 2014. Their mission is to create healthy and abundant oceans for us as humans and for the planet. Mittermeier is a pioneer of the modern conservation photography movement and Nicklen is a renowned National Geographic polar photographer. Recently, their team visited Abaco to document the devastation of Hurricane Dorian socially and environmentally. They visited several communities including Marsh Harbour, Man-O-War and Hope Town where they had the opportunity to interview locals about their hurricane experience, as well as visit key ecosystems around Abaco such as coral reefs and mangroves. I'm sure their story will be empowering for the future of Abaco; post Dorian. As quoted by Cristina Mittermeier "Hope is empowerment, Hope is a solution, Hope is a game- changer." We have been inspired by our brief encounter with this powerful team, as they have reinforced hopefulness into the future of FRIENDS!
ENVIRONMENTAL HIGHLIGHT: Reef Resilience

Shortly before Dorian hit, The Perry Institute for Marine Science and its partners had surveyed reefs across Grand Bahama and Abaco to assess their health. Following Dorian, they were able to come back and reassess these areas from the impacts of the hurricane. Over the 370 miles that the surveys covered, minimal damage was found on the majority of reefs. Unfortunately Mermaid Reef, where FRIENDS does most of our educational field trips, sustained extensive damage due to debris from its close proximity to the shoreline. We are looking into how we can help with logistics to get the debris removed, and hopefully the recovery will begin soon.

The scientists were also able to visit four of the Reef Rescue Network's coral nurseries and assess out-planted corals in national parks in both Grand Bahama and Abaco. The great news is that all of the corals on these nurseries survived the storm and will be used to support reef restoration. Also from the surveys, it appears that our offshore reefs around Abaco sustained minimal damage, including Sandy Cay Reef in Pelican Cays Land and Sea Park, pictured below. This gives us hope for the recovery of our oceans post-Dorian and proves how resilient these amazing ecosystems are.

The Perry Institute will be releasing a full report of all the findings from these surveys in the near future. We will continue to update on this as well as the progress of Mermaid Reef.

The government is expected to collect a minimum of $2.5 million per year from Global Port Holdings (GPH) for its leasing of the Port of Nassau once construction is complete, according to the heads of agreement (HOA) that was tabled in the House of Assembly on Tuesday.

The annual lease charge will be calculated on the basis of $0.50 per passenger movement plus value-added tax (VAT) and no less than $2 million during the construction period, increasing to $2.5 million once the construction phase is complete.

GPH is eyeing the first quarter of 2020 to break ground on the $250 million redevelopment project.  Read more >>

Junkanoo organizers yesterday said they have lost all trust in Youth Sports and Culture Minister Lanisha Rolle.

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Junkanoo organizers yesterday said they have lost all trust in Youth Sports and Culture Minister Lanisha Rolle over alleged attempts to interfere with management of the upcoming parades.

The Junkanoo Corporation New Providence (JCNP) said Rolle announced the inclusion of a new Junkanoo group “The Immortals”, and plans to restructure the parade’s management committee without consultation or agreement.

Rolle made the announcement at a presentation to announce seed funding to the Junkanoo Groups for the 2019-2020 Junkanoo Season.

The group said its members were stunned, and insulted, and called on the prime minister to intervene in a press statement released last night.  Read more >>

“Building resilience to predict, manage and recover from these disruptions has become even more critical,” said Edmund Bartlett.

By Brian Major

The Jamaica-based Global Tourism Resilience and Crisis Management Centre (GTRCM) on Monday donated $50,000 for hurricane relief to the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism and Aviation at GTRCM’s board of governors meeting in London.

The donation was drawn from GTRCM’s relief fund supporting “tourism-ravaged economies” impacted by disruptions including natural disasters and pandemics, said GTRCM officials. Category 5 Hurricane Dorian struck the Bahamas last month causing widespread flooding and destruction in the territory’s Abaco Islands and Grand Bahama Island districts.  Read more >>

FIU researchers: there’s a 'window of opportunity' in the Bahamas for stronger building code enforcement

Extreme Events Institute researchers analyzed results from first post-Dorian survey of Bahamians, find increased public support for safer construction, stricter code enforcement

Most people in the Bahamas support the funding of stronger building code enforcement, based on the results of the first national survey of Bahamians conducted in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian.

Hurricane Dorian was a very strong Category 5 storm when it hit and then stalled over the northwestern Bahamas islands of Abaco and Grand Bahama on Sept. 1-3.  Although the losses are still being tallied, Dorian killed at least 65 people and caused an estimated $7 billion in damages.  Less than four weeks later, interviewers from Public Domain, a Nassau-based research firm, surveyed by phone a random sample of 1,000 people across the island nation (with the exception of the hardest hit islands and people still in shelters). It was the first general public opinion survey fielded after Dorian hit, and at the request of FIU’s Extreme Events Institute (EEI), the firm added a set of questions designed to explore how Bahamians felt about building codes and building code enforcement—crucial policies for reducing future disaster losses.  Read more >>

ForwardKeys, the travel analytics firm, has revealed that despite the recent ravages of hurricane Dorian and other huge storms in the Caribbean, tourism will continue to grow. The results of the study were presented at a Caribbean Tourism Organization-organised news conference at World Travel Market.

Joy Jibrilu, Director General, The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism said: “The Bahamas is an archipelago with more than 700 islands and cays, spread over 100,000 square miles of ocean. Because of our unique geography, a hurricane can impact some parts of the country, but leave other parts untouched. That is the case with Hurricane Dorian. The majority of our country remains beautiful and palm-fringed, with unspoiled beaches in several shades of white and pink. We would like everyone to know that the best thing they can do for us right now is visit. Our beautiful island nation is ready to welcome you.”  Read more >>

33rd Conchman Triathlon Deemed a Success.

Months of planning culminated in a day of friendly, but fierce, competition as organizers and participants of the 33rd Annual Conchman Triathlon swam, biked, and ran their way to the finish line. Since its inception more than 30 years ago, the GBPA Conchman Triathlon has welcomed competitors from across the globe with this year’s event attracting athletes from as far away as Switzerland.

At the sound of the pistol, 125 triathletes, competing in categories ranging from Sprint, Olympic, and IronKids, as individuals and in Teams, put months of intense training to the test at the annual sporting event. Set against the backdrop of Grand Bahama Island’s beautiful Taino Beach, the event once again gave race enthusiasts the opportunity to swim, bike, and run their way to triathlete success.
With the help of a slew of vendors such as Jasmine Roxbury, Carla Hanna-Wilson & Tony Macaroni providing food and drink stands along the route to keep triathletes and volunteers refreshed over the course of the day. The event was again able to provide an environment that was both safe and competitive.

       CROSSREACH
GOING FORWARD
OCTOBER. 2019
Hurricane Dorian certainly changed our operations in Crossreach. The warehouse (together with 2 other warehouses at RAM) have been emptied and re-filled time and time again. We estimate that Crossreach teams together with help from Crisis Recovery International (CRI) and several other off-shore organizations have bagged and delivered on a daily basis, a total of some 6,000 bags full of food, and supplies since 3 or 4 days after the storm passed. Deliveries have been made throughout Grand Bahama Island from McLeans Town in the east to western end of the island. This translates into some $250,000 worth of goods and supplies all of which have been donated and brought onto the island by sea and by air, both private and commercial.

Although there has been a tremendous response to the needs of Grand Bahama residents from the off-shore organization such as setting up a mobile hospital (Samaritan’s Purse), numerous food kitchens and goods supply centres, Crossreach is one of the very few organizations that gets the food and supplies directly into the hands of those who need it most, namely those who are too sick, too old, too incapacitated, or lack the means to travel to the distribution centres to collect the food.

ANOTHER fabulous book I must tell you about is QUADRILLE by Beth Andrews, due to be released as an e-book by REGENCY READS November 15th, 2019! I have read several of the author’s Regency books. Just love them!
About Quadrille:

The Regency was an era of rogues, rakes, and rebellious women. Falling in love was as common—and as challenging—as dancing a quadrille. In these short stories, four young ladies navigate the intricate steps that lead them to the altar and to the men of their dreams.

Here are short synopses of the stories in Quadrille:

A Noble Deception: In a bucolic English countryside, a handsome, dashing nobleman meets and falls for the lovely young daughter of a clergyman. When he makes her the belle of the local ball, a proposal seems inevitable.  But does she feel the same? Story originally published in Chapter One magazine.

The Ungrateful Governess: Phillip Hayden is betrothed to Julia Gollard—whom he doesn’t care for—when he falls in love with the family’s governess. In an act of fate, he meets a young man whose own heartache may provide the solution to Phillip’s dilemma. Can he conceive a plan to get what they both want? About the Author of Quadrille:

This Beth Andrews is actually NOT female! She is also not a woman trapped in a man's body. She doesn’t write for Harlequin and isn't an American. “She” happens to be a male, born and raised in Nassau, Bahamas, whose real name is Paul Bethel.

Paul has been writing poems and short stories for as long as he can remember. He adopted the name “Beth Andrews” in the early 1990s, when his first romance short stories were published in magazines like “Romantic Interludes.” Little did he know then how many other writers would publish under the same name!

After winning prizes in several contests sponsored by local chapters of Romance Writers of America, he decided to seriously pursue book-length fiction. His first Regency romance novel, “The Marplot Marriage”, appeared in print in 1999--and disappeared just as quickly, along with the publisher, Regency Press. In 2004, his second romance novel, “A Scandalous Secret”, was published by Robert Hale in London, England. Two more Regency romances for Hale followed: “St. George and the Dragon” and “Stolen Waters.” After that came two light-hearted cozy mysteries (also with a Regency setting): “Hidden in the Heart” and “The Unforgiving Eye.” These have all been released as e-books from Belgrave House and Regency Reads (and are all readily available on Amazon.com).

Having been a confirmed Janeite from his 20s, Paul wrote a number of articles for Jane Austen’s Regency World magazine, and finally decided to update Jane's juvenile story, “Love and Freindship” [that is actually how Jane Austen spelled “Friendship”!], which is his seventh published book. It looks as though Large Print and Audio versions will also be available in the not-too-distant future.

A confirmed technophobe, Paul refuses to become involved in social media, and has neither a Facebook account nor a webpage! He says if you’re determined to learn more, you can find some of his posts at the Hale Books writers’ blog. Otherwise, he is rather elusive, and “in danger of becoming reclusive!” In any case, if you want to know what he's like (though he says he can't imagine why anyone would), just read his books. He is a firm believer that it’s the work that really matters--not the author. He says this may explain why he is in no danger of becoming either rich or famous! I’m inclined to disagree about this! Paul deserves all the accolades he gets.

AND LAST BUT DEFINITELY NOT LEAST! - I must mention CARNIVAL OF LOVE: A TALE OF A BAHAMIAN FAMILY by Ernestia Fraser. I just loved this book!
About “Carnival of Love: A Tale of a Bahamian Family”:

This is a memoir that explores the meaning of love and family within a broken home. Set in the Bahamas, the story is told through the eyes of Maria Helix, one of nine children growing up in a stable and caring environment. With the sudden and unexpected dissolution of her parents’ marriage, Maria is forced to let go of her idealized past and confront new realities of loss, displacement, and economic instability.

Through honest depiction, humor and hard-won wisdom, Maria reveals a complex picture of familial bonds sometimes marked by conflict.  Moreover, her tale proves that love is the most compelling force needed to piece together what is left of a broken family.

A SMORGASBORD

I hope you’ve enjoyed this smorgasbord of books! After you’ve read them, the authors would be most grateful if you could leave your comments online.  It only takes a moment and you don’t need to give a long in depth review.

If the word “review” puts you off, don’t worry. You don’t have to be an expert at reviews. Your grammar doesn’t even have to be perfect! All you need to post are your honest comments about the product. This can be as short or as long as you wish.

Many thanks and have a glorious autumn or spring depending on where you live!

Best wishes,
Fay
