PORTLAND — Thanks to the generosity of Maine parishioners, the Diocese of Portland is able to donate $200,740 to the Archdiocese of Nassau in the Bahamas.

On Sept. 14-15, 2019, Bishop Robert P. Deeley asked Maine’s Catholic churches to hold a special collection to provide aid and support to victims of Hurricane Dorian as well as other natural disasters that could occur this year.

Hurricane Dorian intensified before making landfall in the Bahamas where it battered the island for nearly 40 hours, leaving catastrophic damage in its path with at least 70 deaths recorded and thousands of homes and buildings destroyed. It is regarded as the worst natural disaster in the country’s history.

The proceeds have been sent to Archbishop Patrick C. Pinder, archbishop of Nassau, Bahamas, to help with the recovery efforts throughout his diocese. The Diocese of Portland has had a special relationship with the Archdiocese of Nassau for nearly 40 years since the Second Vatican Council called faithful Catholics to be “missionary.” This relationship included a mission in the Bahamas that was staffed by the Sisters of Mercy of Portland.  Read more >>

THE government has banned travel from China because of the 2019 Novel Coronavirus, the fast-spreading epidemic that has killed 171 people and infected thousands overseas.

Top health officials said yesterday that non-residents who have visited China in the last 20 days will be denied entry to this country regardless of their nationality and returning residents will be quarantined and monitored for symptoms during an incubation period of 14 days.

Two residents have already been quarantined upon arrival here yesterday, Health Minister Dr Duane Sands said. However, there remains no suspected, reported or confirmed cases of the virus in The Bahamas.

The World Health Organisation declared the new strain of the coronavirus a public health emergency of international concern yesterday but strongly discouraged countries from imposing travel restrictions to China.  Read more >>

South Florida Art Fair On The Water Showcases Bahamian Art and Culture
and Donates to Country’s Hurricane Relief

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL –January 27, 2020 – The Islands Of The Bahamas were prominently featured recently, as a part of Art Fort Lauderdale, a unique art fair on the water.  One of the luxury homes used as a part of the art tour was designated ‘Bahamas Haus’. The exquisite home was decorated with Bahamian art and Junkanoo pieces, and exhibited various components of Bahamian culture including a classic selection of Bahamian music in the background.

The annual 4-day curated art fair, Art Fort Lauderdale, included attendees traveling by water ferry to various luxury homes set up as art galleries.  The luxury home designated ‘Bahamas Haus’ was co-sponsored by the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism and Argus Advisors, a legal, financial and corporate services provider based in Freeport, Grand Bahama, Bahamas.

Photograph "The Lady in Red" shot on an Island in The Bahamas by photographer Alessandro Sarno and below it a collection of award winning Bahamian crafted straw bags.

The spacious 6-bedroom Bahamas Haus, designed with a cigar lounge, spa room and guest apartment, was hosted by Florida Luxurious Properties of Fort Lauderdale and showcased various expressions of Bahamian fine arts, from paintings, photography, sculptures and ceramics, to award winning Bahamian crafted straw bags.

A highlight of Bahamas Haus was the attention it brought to The Bahamas’ recovery efforts in the wake of the destructive Hurricane Dorian that devastated two of the country’s Islands, Abaco and Grand Bahama, in September of 2019.

Ten percent of the proceeds from Bahamas Haus was committed for donation to  The Bahamas’ Grand Bahama Children’s Home, to go towards the rebuilding of the home, and providing educational  supplies and resources for art therapy for  children rescued post Hurricane Dorian.

Vernon Brooks of Sunshine Junkanoo Band, (L) describes the artwork on a Junkanoo headpiece to an attendee.

Bahamas Haus was the third of the three elegant homes that comprised the show and according to curator, Jennifer Nayak Feldman – also known as @LasOlasLocal, the idea for Bahamas Haus came about as an opportunity to, “Help us create a cultural bridge and connecting a deeply committed global audience through the promotion and education of contemporary fine artists and cultural tourism from The Bahamas.”

As a part of its sponsorship, the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism provided Junkanoo pieces imported from Grand Bahama.  The Ministry also sponsored the South Florida based Sunshine Junkanoo Band who provided guests to the house with a historical overview of the Bahamian cultural expression of Junkanoo as well as demonstrations on the artistry of Junkanoo costume-making.

A guest arriving Bahamas from water taxi is met by a welcoming committee of costumed Junkanooers including  at right, Phylia Shivers, Bahamas Tourist Office, Florida,Sr. Marketing Representative.

“Our participation in Art Fort Lauderdale has been an event we have been working towards since last year when we were presented with the opportunity.  But now to be a part of it, proudly showcasing the variety of creative expressions from our artists in The Bahamas, I have to say I was truly thrilled,” said Betty Bethel-Moss, Director of Marketing, Bahamas Tourist Office, Florida.

“It took a lot of planning, however, much thanks to curator Jennifer Nayak Feldman, a resident of Florida and The Bahamas; Andre Feldman, Argus Advisors; Andrew Martineau and Evan Snow, co-founders of Art Fort Lauderdale and the Bahamas marketing team members who joined me in the efforts - District Marketing Manager, Tina Lee-Anderson and Sr. Marketing Representative, Phylia Shivers.  They all saw it as a labor of love and an opportunity to get the message out that we are open for business,” said Bethel-Moss.

Curator, Jennifer Nayak Feldman, also known as @LasOlasLocal, speaks to a group of attendees about the art promoting the theme 'Resiliency of the Bahamian Spirit'.

The Director also expressed thanks and appreciation for the support given to the Grand Bahama Children’s Home, and noted that “This art fair allowed us to share with attendees that The Bahamian people are very resilient and despite the devastation of the massive Hurricane Dorian, The Bahamas is 'still rockin'.”

We must not #forget

Dear Readers,

What seems like only yesterday to residents in the Northern Bahamas, has actually been 5 long months of very recovery time for the thousands who were impacted by the passage of hurricane Dorian. Though #242NewsBahamas' offices - which are located in Freeport, Grand Bahama - received only minimal electrical damage to equipment, members of our team and their families were severely affected. We, like countless others, are still working through the unimaginable physical mental and emotional challenges caused by that dreaded storm and each day, we fight to regain a sense of normalcy.

As we were preparing our weekly editorial we came across this writeup which appeared as Tuesday's editorial in The Official Nassau Guardian Ltd. (1844). The writer so aptly summed up the complex emotions which many of us living, working and surviving in both Grand Bahama and Abaco and so we thought it would be great to share it with our readers. We hope that this article acts as a reminder to those persons who were not affected by this storm, directly or indirectly, to remember those who were and still are recovering from Dorian, and send a prayer or two their way today.

We are thrilled to announce Phase I of our recovery/rebuild with the arrival of our beautiful La Boit Specialty Vehicles Inc. Inc. mobile clinic!
This 26' fully equipped unit will serve as our clinic until our shelter clinic is rebuilt. Then we will be taking it out into the communities to do spay/neuter until we have covered this entire island.

There are so many people to thank but we must start with our many amazing supporters from near and far whose donations made this possible. We are also very grateful to Dr. Mary Gardner, (U.S. veterinarian and daughter of HSGB board member Christine Gardner), for scouting mobile units and helping us find the perfect one.
Natalie and the talented people at Applied Graphics Limited did an amazing job with the signage and we very much appreciate the discount. Koni Wade at La Boit was a delight to work with and made the entire process easy and smooth.

Big thanks to Tropical Shipping for bringing her over safely and for the discount, and thanks as always to our awesome friends at Freeport Ship Services for clearing her for us. We can't recommend these two companies highly enough for the services they provide - always timely, professional and fair.

Our longtime friend and partner Ellen Kohn of The Kohn Foundation has been a rock for us for years but never more than these last five months. The amount of accounting, grant writing and phone calling she has done is staggering and she has been there for us every step of the way.

To the pet owning public on Grand Bahama - our clinic is open! We're also very pleased to welcome Dr. De'Yanza J. Hanna who joined us this month as our Staff Veterinarian. Please call 727.1390 for appointments (our landline still out).

MURAL OPEN CALL
"THE EVOLUTION OF BAHAMIAN IDENTITY"
The NAGB invites artists to create a mural that comments on the indomitable Bahamian spirit through the lens of time. The mural created should allow onlookers to take a walk-through hundreds of years of Bahamian resilience: from the Lucayans, to the age of colonial rule, to our triumphant independence and all that is and will be a part of our great nation. It, ideally, will also spark discussions on the importance of preserving and sharing our history with future generations as an invaluable educational tool. The artist or group of artists whose design concept is selected will receive resources and a stipend to create the mural in a public space. The deadline for submissions is March 1, 2020. For more information or to apply, contact Zearier E. Munroe at 328-5800 or zmunroe@nagb.org.bs.

Unguided Bahama sailing tours allow for great adventure

The author and friends set sail from from Little Farmer's Cay to Big Farmer's Cay in the Bahamas' Exuma Islands, a chain of 365 islands. (The New York Times/Sara Fox)

by PORTER FOX, The New York Times

Thick emerald waves broke over a quarter-mile-long sandbar, blocking our way. A few hundred yards east, whitecaps crashed across Exuma Sound — a 6,000-foot-deep abyss of rolling swells and powerful trade winds that would likely flip our tiny sailboats. Beyond the sandbar, we could see the tranquil flats of the Exuma Bank and the protected beach where we hoped to camp the first night of the trip. We just had to get around the bar before dark.

A shadow flashed under the hull — a four-foot-wide stingray searching for food in the ebbing tide. Two needlefish jetted from the water and nearly landed in the cockpit. The water was so clear, it was like looking through a glass-bottom boat at coral heads, patches of seagrass and conchs passing by on the ocean floor.   Read more >>

The Bahamas has began restricting accessing to their ports for guests that could’ve possibly been exposed to the coronavirus. For Disney Cruise Line ships, this affects both Nassau and Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay.
A letter shared with the Disney Cruise Line Blog by a guest aboard the Disney Dream details the new advisory:
“Late this evening we also became aware that The Bahamas will not allow anyone to disembark in a Bahamian port of call if they have been to mainland China in the past 20 days.”
Guests were asked to contact guests services if the restriction applied to them.
Recently, Disney Cruise Line began more rigorous screening of passengers, denying boarding to guests that have traveled from or through mainland China in the 14 days prior to the start of their cruise.
Disney Cruise Line also continues to closely monitor the situation and any new restrictions or advisories, and is in contact with regional and international health agencies.

Every other December, a handful of students visit the home of the San Salvador Rock Iguana with David McKenzie, biology professor, to experience field ecology. During the last trip, one of the iguanas was killed.

“There are about five hundred left in the world,” said Scott Romeiser, senior biochemistry major. “They are endemic to San Salvador island, however none of them really live there; they live on cays…The feral dogs and cats have essentially killed them off. One of the feral dogs got into a breeding enclosure that was on campus, which is essentially two lives lost for what is a critically endangered species.”  Read more >>

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – ZNS talk show host Shenique Miller yesterday said she feels “victimized” after her show was dropped by the Broadcast Corporation of The Bahamas last week.

Miller, who hosts “The Conversation”, said she was only given four days notice that her contract would not be renewed.

BCB General Manager Kayleaser Deveaux-Issacs declined comment on the matter yesterday.

In an interview with Eyewitness News Online, she said: “The reason given to me was the fact that the show was not making any money”.  Read more >>
