Combining Google Trends data with traditional forecast models improved accuracy of predicted tourist arrivals to the Bahamas from the U.S by about 30%, according to a working paper by IMF senior economist Serhan Cevik released Friday.  Read more >>

Deltec Bank, Bahamas – “As more institutions start to integrate the technology, using AI and voice in this way will ultimately be fundamental for maintaining a competitive advantage.”

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and voice technology have gone a long way to transforming our personal lives in the last few years. From talking to Google, Alexa and Siri, we can control much of what we do without even lifting a finger. Whilst the case for using voice is quite clear in these applications, there are other industries where it could be advantageous but, voice remains largely untested.

One such industry is banking.  Read more >>

John Rolle

By Chester Robards

Governor of The Central Bank of The Bahamas (CBOB) John Rolle said yesterday that the bank sees The Bahamas’ economy improving in 2020, though growth at previously projected levels is not expected as a result of the effects of Hurricane Dorian.

Rolle’s optimism was due to some quicker-than-expected improvements on some of the Abaco Cays that were affected by Hurricane Dorian; the movement of tourist visits to islands unaffected by Hurricane Dorian, with the help of the vacation rental sector; and the pass-through effect of construction on the hurricane-affected islands of Abaco and Grand Bahama. He added that the foreign investment portion of the economy also remains robust.

“We see the economy improving,” Rolle said.  Read more >>

Tourist dollars go a long way toward the northern islands’ recovery — and it's an exciting time to visit the Bahamas, thanks to a group of recently arrived and renovated indie hotels that channel the pride of their owners.  Read more >>

Grand Bahama Shipyard’s Drydock No. 2 — the big one — is still not expected to take ships during 2020.

So said Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. during the company’s earnings call Tuesday.

2019 crane collapse
In April last year, a crane collapsed while Oasis of the Seas was in the dock. Eight people sustained injuries and the ship was damaged (and subsequently repaired in Cadiz). There waa structural damage to the dock, too.

‘We do not expect that dock to be back online in 2020, likely in 2021,’ RCL EVP and CFO Jason Liberty said.  Read more >>

One of the most popular shore excursions in Nassau, Bahamas is the Blue Lagoon Beach Day tour. I decided to check it out for myself and see what it offers.

Blue Lagoon is a private island that is about a 30 minute boat ride away from where the cruise ships tender in Nassau.  It is located just off the coast of Paradise Island, which is home to Atlantis Resort and many extremely extravagant mansions.

Blue Lagoon offers a variety of options for booking a visit to their island. There is a basic beach day pass, dolphin swim combo, stingray encounter, Segway and more. I counted nine different tours that take you to Blue Lagoon.  Read more >>

The Bahamas’ ranking as the world’s sixth most expensive nation to live in highlights “a fundamental challenge related to the country’s economic viability”, it was argued last night.

Matt Aubry, the Organisation for Responsible Governance’s (ORG) executive director, said the findings by CEOWORLD magazine exposed the “tremendous” burden imposed on lower income Bahamians by the ever-increasing cost of living and growing “wealth disparity” between rich and poor.

He told Tribune Business that many households and small businesses were “struggling to manage” in this environment, and having to be “super stringent with their money” to make ends meet, thereby acting as a further drag on economic growth.  Read more >>

Equality Bahamas: Act on Marital Rape Issue Now

$

Equality Bahamas draws attention to the current situation wherein The Bahamas is in contravention with the Convention on the Elimination of All forms of Discrimination Against Women, Belem Do Para, and numerous other conventions with its Sexual Offenses Act which provides a definition of rape that ensures women have no legal recourse when sexually violated by their spouses. The issue has been raised numerous times including the 2009 tabling of the Marital Rape Bill by Loretta Butler-Turner and the statement by United Nations Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women Dubravka Šimonović in 2017 following her country visit. Now, on the heels of participation in a meeting on reforming discriminatory laws convened by the Equality and Justice Alliance (EJA) in St. Lucia, Speaker of the House Halson Moultrie has made wrongheaded remarks spurring commentary from the public.

Moultrie clearly spoke from a personal point of view, allowing his religious affiliations to overshadow his role as a legislator. There is no way to simultaneously believe that a woman should have bodily autonomy and that, in a marriage, a spiritual oneness means one person cannot physically violate the other. It is clear that legislators know this is not true as charges can be pressed against a spouse for domestic violence.  Read more >>

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) states in its most recent mission report on its visit to The Bahamas that it is willing to make $200 million available to this country through its Rapid Financing Instrument “at low cost and without policy conditionality”, to carry on rebuilding the economy after Hurricane Dorian. But yesterday Deputy Prime Minister Peter Turnquest told Guardian Business that the government is not considering the loan offer through the IMF.

“Not at this time,” is all Turnquest would say on the issue.  Read more >>
