Five Things You Never Knew About the Bahamas

The Bahamas is famous around the world for its striking beach-side beauty, and with its sparkling turquoise waters, white sand and near-perfect weather, it is certainly deserving of this accolade. But this stunning island range is so much more than just a great destination for a beach holiday; with a multitude of uninhabited islands and secret cays to explore, this exotic destination is perfect for adventure lovers.

Have a look at a few facts you may not have known about this tropical paradise…

The Bahamas is a Cultural Hotspot

One of the many captivating things about the Bahamas is its diversity: each island has its own individual character, ambiance and subtle variances in culture. Strongly influenced by its African, Indian and European heritage, Bahamian culture is entirely unique and rich in Caribbean customs.

A particular highlight of Bahamian culture is Junkanoo, a street carnival which takes place on Boxing Day and New Year's Day. Junkanoo is a treat for the eyes as well as the ears: you can marvel at the spectacular costumes and floats of the parade while listening to authentic Bahamian music, such as Calypso, Soca and Rake 'n' Scrape.

Perhaps the jewel in the crown is the locals themselves; warm, friendly and laid-back, most residents of the Bahamas are all too happy to tell stories of their island’s history and important events to interested (and respectful) tourists.

The Bahamas Has Over 2,700 Islands & Cays

If you love exploring then it won’t be long before you realise that the Bahamas is one of the best places in the world to do this: boasting over 700 different islands and 2,000 cays that stretch from the fringe of Florida to the edge of the Caribbean, the possibilities for adventure are endless.

Those with sea-legs can charter their own boat and explore the secret side of this idyllic destination – and because the islands are scattered across 100,000 square miles, you could spend years sailing round them all! There are only about 30 inhabited islands in the Bahamas – the rest are isolated and secluded enough to be perfect destinations for a private and relaxing day out.

The Bahamas is a Gastronomical Gem

Although you may not immediately associate the Bahamas with fine dining, any fans of seafood will be in their element here. Every day an abundance of fresh fish and seafood is caught by the local fishermen, the most popular choices being conch, crawfish, red snapper, grouper and yellow tail.

Conch fritters image courtesy of istolethetv
Whichever way you like to eat your fish, be it steamed, baked, fried or stewed, you will be spoilt for choice here. Conch is considered the national dish in the Bahamas, so you should make sure you sample them where possible; a local favourite is conch fritters, which are deliciously crispy and best served with hot sauce and a slice of lime – and preferably eaten on a beach for maximum enjoyment.

The Bahamas is Ideal for Bird Lovers

It isn’t just beach holidays that the Bahamas is perfect for – animal lovers will have a brilliant time exploring the wildlife reserves found on this paradise. The Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park, located in the Exuma island range of the Bahamas, is a strikingly beautiful sweep of cays that stretches for 176 square miles and provides a safe haven for the wildlife indigenous to this area.

Here you can spot over 40 species of tropical birds and also enjoy some of the best snorkelling in the whole of the Bahamas. Inagua National Park also deserves a special mention, as this park just happens to be the world's largest breeding colony of West Indian flamingos: there are approximately 50,000 of these remarkable birds to be found here.

The Bahamas Boasts the Best Sea Life in the World

As you may expect from a tropical location that is entirely surrounded by crystal clear ocean, the Bahamas is one of the most fascinating locations in the world to snorkel or scuba dive in. With sea life that includes dolphins, sea lions, sharks, rays, barracudas and all manner of exotic fish, it’s no exaggeration to say the ocean is absolutely teeming with life here.

There are also plenty of secret lagoons, caves, shipwrecks, coral formations and magnificent underwater ruins to explore. Aside from all this, the Bahamas is also home to the world’s deepest blue hole, Dean’s Blue Hole on Long Island. Although the Great Blue Hole in Belize is more well-known, Dean’s Blue Hole is situated right next to the shore, which means you can be swimming in water that is knee-deep and suddenly find yourself over a sudden drop off of 202 metres...

MP Khaalis E. Rolle Calls For Young Men to "Stop Seeking Identity From Guns and Violence."

By Arthia Nixon, The Ambassador Agency

From the Desk of Hon. Khaalis E. Rolle, MP Pinewood Gardens

(Nassau, The Bahamas)… Member of Parliament for Pinewood Gardens Hon. Khaalis E. Rolle is appealing to young Bahamian men to put down their weapons and calling community leaders in his constituency to curb violence. This, after learning that a 20 year-old member of his community was among three men gunned down over the weekend in three separate incidents.

"My heart goes out to the young man who was killed over the weekend, and the others who have lost their lives in my constituency," he added. "I knew the individual personally as his family was most instrumental during my campaign. In fact, his sister was pregnant while campaigning for me and she died shortly after her baby was born. On Sunday morning, I visited the family and it was very difficult to know that they have lost two children as young adults, in such a short space of time.

Rolle said that more programs must be developed to interrupt negative behaviour in young people.

"What we see now is young people getting their self esteem from a gun or becoming known as a gunman," he said. "Until you find something to replace that gun with, you are going to continue to have these type of criminal activities."

Rolle compared the criminal activity in The Bahamas with the 1980s and 1990s gang culture of Chicago and South Central, L.A.

"The court system and policing are a part of the solution," he noted. "However, that is not the only component.  Sadly, people have become desensitized in this nation. It is unconscionable that people will upload photos of deceased individuals without consideration for the family of these people. We are becoming a morbid, insensitive culture."

"As a father, my heart aches to even think about what these parents are going through in their time of mourning. Their loss is my loss, because as the representative who was elected into office by the good people of Pinewood Gardens, incidents like this is certainly my business. These crimes affect the children I see during back to school drives, the parents I see during walkabouts and the young men I see on the basketball courts. This is our community and our Bahamas and we all must work together to protect it.

Rolle confirmed that he is already organizing a meeting for his constituency office in Pinewood Gardens to discuss several initiatives to curb crime.

(Bimini, Bahamas) Xernona Clayton, founder of the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame celebrated her 84th birthday on the Bahamas island where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. penned a portion of his “I Have A Dream” speech. One of the more notable Atlanta-based female civil rights leader, Xernona Clayton Brady and her twin sister were born August 30, 1930 in Muskogee, Oklahoma.

The broadcasting executive who founded the Trumpet Awards was joined by over 70 friends and family members on the island of Bimini, which lies just sixty miles off the coast of Florida.

Among the guests was former Member of Parliament for Bimini and the Berry Islands, Hon. George Weech. Bishop Neil C. Ellis, who was the third Bahamian inducted onto the International Civil Rights Hall of Fame in Atlanta and his wife, Patrice also joined in the festivities, with the clergyman bringing remarks as a friend of the birthday lady. Bahamas Consul General to Atlanta, Randy E. Rolle, a native of Bimini was also on hand to bring remarks and gave visitors a true island experience, before inviting them to return for their special events

“Xernona Clayton is truly a friend to The Commonwealth of The Bahamas,” Rolle said. “It is an absolute honor to be here to pay tribute to a woman who has been such a big part of our Consulate in Atlanta.  There are many from Atlanta who have chosen The Bahamas as the place to make their memories. This year we’ve been proud to have provided assistance to Think Like a Man producer Will Packer with his birthday bash and Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed and his wife with their engagement. So we are excited when The Bahamas is the setting for such momentous occasions.”

BTVI Students Chosen for Study Abroad Program

OFF TO COLLEGE: The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute’s (BTVI) Manager and Consultant, Dr. Iva Dahl conveys best wishes to BTVI student, Isaiah Strachan, who has been awarded an Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP) scholarship by the Canadian government for the fall 2014 semester. He will study at the institution with BTVI student, Diane Smith (not pictured).

Isaiah Strachan recently joined the list of students at The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI), who have been afforded the opportunity to continue studies abroad on an Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP) scholarship.

The 22-year-old who is headed to Holland College in Canada for the fall semester, will join BTVI student, Diane Smith - both of whom will study Electronics Engineering.  Following the semester, both students are expected to return to BTVI to complete their Associate of Applied Science degree in Electronics Engineering Installers and Repairs.

The 2009 graduate of St. Augustine’s College (SAC) said he was initially shocked at the prospect of heading to Canada for a semester.  However, he now anticipates the journey.  “I am looking forward to the experience in a new country and seeing snow.  I am also looking forward to learning new things in electronics engineering.”

The scholarship, granted by the Canadian government, provides students from Latin America and the Caribbean with short-term exchange opportunities at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

BTVI’s Manager and Consultant, Dr. Iva Dahl, emphasized to Isaiah that he is now an ambassador for the institution at Holland College.  She expressed confidence that he will do well, adding that the sky is the limit.

Meanwhile, BTVI’s Coordinator of Student Affairs, Raquel Bethel, described Isaiah as a “stellar” student who has demonstrated he is “one of the best in the Electronics program.” Ms. Bethel encouraged Isaiah, who has a strong academic background, to become actively involved in campus life, making the best of the experience.

Additionally, BTVI student, Valentino Burrows, who spent the spring 2014 semester at Holland College, shared how great an experience the study abroad program was for him.

“The professors at Holland are passionate about what they’re teaching. They push you. I never connected with people that quickly. There was a bond formed and I felt I knew them for years.  I even found time to play football with the Prince Edward Island Privateers,” Valentino reminisced.

Valentino, who was a part of the Energy Systems Engineering program added, “If it wasn’t for BTVI, the door may not have been opened for me. All I can say is, ‘Thank you.’
