Scholarship Recipients – Seated from left to right: Rashad Wood, Jonathas Belony and Cameron Sweeting with BTVI’s Manager and Consultant, Dr. Iva Dahl following the Lodge Claudius R. Walker 1808 Scholarship Award presentation.  Standing are: District Grand Master, Charles Johnson (l) and the lodge’s Worshipful Master, Brother Godfrey Bethell.
Three deserving young men now have the opportunity to fulfill their dreams as the first recipients of the Lodge C. R. Walker Scholarship to attend The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI).

The recipients, Jonathas Belony, Rashad Wood and Cameron Sweeting, were chosen based on academic merit, financial need, field of study and personal qualities inclusive of leadership skills and commitment to community involvement.  Belony and Wood are Electrical Installation students, while Sweeting will focus on Carpentry.

“The world is your oyster here at BTVI,” said BTVI’s Manager and Consultant, Dr. Iva Dahl, “you’re the trailblazers” she told the trio.

Dr. Dahl expressed gratitude to the lodge for their vision of investing in the young men. “We need the help, our young men need the help, our country needs the help,” she stressed.

Wood gave God thanks for the opportunity to realize his potential, while Belony said the scholarship has motivated him to go further in life.  “I see you believe in me.  Thank you. I have the chance to make myself into a better person and a better man someday,” said the teary-eyed 19-year-old.

For Sweeting, being awarded a scholarship is a life-changing opportunity.  “Thanks for choosing me.  My hard work and survival means something to you,” he stated.

“Not only does students benefit, but the nation.  I’ve made up my mind to make an impact on the nation,” added the 17-year-old.

Meanwhile, District Grand Master Charles Johnson and the lodge’s Worshipful Master, Brother Godfrey Bethell were both pleased with the lodge’s effort to raise funds for the scholarships.  Bethell described the students as “very impressive” and pledged that the lodge will not simply donate funds but intend to mentor them. “We intend to keep in contact with them.  If they need help with studies, we are prepared to assist,” he stated.

Brother Bethell took the opportunity to admonish the two parents present - Shirley Sweeting and Irene Rolle-Wood – to be supportive of the recipients in their vocational pursuits.  The students are expected to maintain at least a 2.75 Grade Point Average (GPA) each semester, perform 20 hours community service while completing their programs and assist with mentoring other males at C. R. Walker High School, of which they all are graduates.

A tearful Ms. Wood gave thanks on behalf of the parents and shared how timely the scholarships are, particularly with the rising cost of education.  “It isn’t every day we come across people with hearts as big as you all.  We promise to encourage our children to live up to the expectations of the agreement. We thank you for believing in our children and being the big brothers to them that you are,” said Ms. Wood.

BTVI’s Associate Vice-President of Fund Development, Alicia Thompson, added that she is confident the establishment of the partnership between the institution and the lodge will make a “substantial difference” in the lives of the young men.

GRATEFUL PARENT, Irene Rolle-Wood becomes tearful as she gives thanks to the brothers of Lodge Claudius R. Walker 1808 for believing in her son and helping him to develop skills to ensure his success.

(Atlanta, Georgia)… Atlanta will be the first North American city to feel the spirit of Junkanoo Carnival when The Commonwealth of The Bahamas presents its latest cultural enterprise abroad.

Cultural Affairs Attache`, Robert Pinder confirmed that the team at the Bahamas Consul General’s Office in Atlanta is working to ensure attendees at the Atlanta launch set for October 8, 2014, receive a “taste of The Bahamas” for a few days. Enough of a taste, he hopes, will prompt them to attend Junkanoo Carnival in The Bahamas in May 2015.

“We are working directly with Bahamas National Festival Commission to ensure that when the delegates arrive from The Bahamas, we have everything in place and our media blitz in full swing,” Pinder stated. “They will be here for a few days and we are utilizing our strategic networking partners to present The Bahamas and its culture directly to Atlanta.”

“The concept of Carnival is not new to Atlanta,” he added. “In fact, this year, there were two Carnival events on the same day and throughout the year, there are multiple venues that feature masqueraders, stilt walkers and more. However, there is absolutely nothing in the world like the authentic Junkanoo experience complete with the sights, sounds and atmosphere of The Bahamas.”

According to Pinder, the signature event will feature Bahamian Junkanoo Carnival masqueraders, Bahamian cuisine prepared by an Atlanta-based Bahamian chef, Bahamian music and more.

Consul General Randy Rolle, Ministry of Tourism and Producer Will Packer Give Filmmaker Opportunity

for Bahamas Consul General’s Office of Atlanta

(Atlanta, Georgia)… When the movie Ride Along 2 rides into theaters, a member of the Bahamas Actors and Filmmakers Association will be able to boast behind the scene experience, after being allowed on set thanks to an initiative by Consul General Randy E. Rolle, the Ministry of Tourism and moviemaker Will Packer.

Rolle, who is the Consul General for The Commonwealth of The Bahamas to Atlanta and surrounding States invited Bahamians in the film industry to submit their credentials.

“Moya Thompson is the first Bahamian to be given the opportunity to work on Will Packer production,” the Consul General stated. “The second person will be selected through The Bahamas’ Ministry of Tourism and that individual will be announced at a later date.”

“It’s an opportunity of a lifetime for a Bahamian and I am happy that [Packer] decided to give us that opportunity,” added Rolle. “Doing some research, I realized he went above and beyond for us. This is something that has never been done and as you know there is a lot of red tape. So the fact that he did all of this for us, speaks to the level of confidence he has in us and of course the friendship and for that I am very appreciative even if it was just two hours, but he so graciously allowed her on set for over a week. The fact is we are here, among some very good people and forging a very good relationship.”

Chosen for the opportunity was Moya Thompson. She has had film roles in Rain and Windjammers but has her own production company that has shelled out projects such as It Takes A Village for Bahamian television. Additionally, Thompson’s month long film, arts and drama camp collaborated with well known Bahamian industry insiders to provide youngsters hands on experience. She also serves on the board of the Bahamas Actors and Filmmakers Association.

She said of her experience: “It was interesting for me as someone in the BAFA because we are discussing things such as legislation which we don’t have. And so we want to see how we can implement those kinds of things that they have over here which are regulated. We (BAFA) do want to move and take it to the next level.”

Packer who is also known for other hits such as Think Like A Man, was delighted to work with the Consul General.  He noted that it’s one thing to go to film school, read books, go online but it’s something else to be right in the middle of it.

“We’re here on the set of a major Hollywood production because of my tremendous relationship with Consul General Rolle, my tremendous relationship with the entire government of The Bahamas, especially the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Tourism,” said Packer.

“When they bought up Moya who is an excellent example of what it means to be up and coming interested in this, wanting to be a part of this, wanting to learn,” he added. “When I had the opportunity to bring her on my set to bring her to be involved with it, I didn’t think twice. I said let’s do it. It was Randy’s idea and I said I absolutely wanted to present these kinds of chances to be on a real movie set, getting real world experience and that is invaluable. I could tell you as a producer, you can’t buy that.”

As for his interest in filming in the location where he spent his star studded 40th birthday this year, Packer said he is already thinking about it.

“I would definitely consider filming in the Bahamas!” said Packer. “It is something Randy and I have talked about specifically. I’ve done over 20 movies and all of them have been in the United States but the first time I go outside the United States, I’d love for it to be The Bahamas. It’s just a matter of finding the right film but with this partnership the sky is the limit.”

for Bahamas Consul General’s Office of Atlanta

(Atlanta, Georgia)… Bernadette Christie, First Lady of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas received “the shock of her life” when she was given a surprise pre-birthday party during her visit to Atlanta, Georgia. Under the guise of being a guest at a party for someone else, she and her sister Paula walked into the home of friend Denise Harrod, only to be greeted by staff of the Bahamas Consulate General’s Office and Bahamas Tourist Office singing “Happy Birthday Mrs. Christie”.

The First Lady was led into a main area by friend, civil rights activist and broadcasting legend Xernona Clayton, where she found cakes honoring her. She also took time to greet Bahamian children whose parents are attached to the Consulate Office. After mixing and mingling, guests dined on a meal prepared by A Taste of Elegance’s Chef Maurice Randal, an Atlanta-based Grand Bahama native.

“I was in on the surprise because we all love Mrs. Christie so much that it was easy to put it together,” revealed Xernona Clayton. “We wouldn’t dare miss it because we are so in love with her and what she represents. Everybody from the country is just so wonderful and so friendly and so inviting, that it’s a joy to have any excuse to get together. And it’s very special because it’s her birthday and I’m delighted to be here.”

“How intriguing and delightful it is for us at The Bahamas Consulate in Atlanta to have [Mrs. Christie] visiting with us just moments before her birthday,” said Student &Cultural Affairs OfficerRobert Pinder. “We thought it would be a momentous occasion to celebrate the First Lady’s birthday while she was visiting here in Atlanta. We are coming together to celebrate the wonderful legacy of our nation’s First Lady.”

“It’s a pleasure on behalf of The Bahamas Tourist Office here in Atlanta to be here and celebrate our First Lady,” added Eddie Archer, General Manager of the Ministry of Tourism’s Atlanta Office. “We are enjoying ourselves truly with a Bahamian flavor. The food, drinks, music and dance… it’s a great feeling!”

Said Deputy Consul General Monique Vanderpool: “Birthdays are so special and we just wanted to let our First Lady know how very special she is. We knew her birthday was coming up and we wanted to start the celebrations here to let her know how much we appreciate and love her.”

“I wish to take this opportunity on behalf of the Consul General’s Office and all the Bahamians in Atlanta, Georgia to wish our First Lady, Mrs. Bernadette Christie a very happy birthday,” said Consul General Randy E. Rolle. “It was a surprise birthday just to show her that we all love her here in Georgia and around the world. We are very happy that she is spending this time with us. She’s going home soon but while she was in our presence we wanted to make the most of it and ensure she had a very good time and an enjoyable day.”

“Good Lord was I surprised?” laughed Mrs. Christie whose actual birthday is September 18. “I was supposed to be coming here to a party for the Ambassador’s wife so I wasn’t surprised - I was shocked! And when I saw all the people I recognized, I realized, these are not friends of the Ambassador’s wife, these are my friends so I was pleasantly surprised. This is the first time I had been surprised at a birthday party. They got me good.”

Reviving Grand Bahama’s cultural experience

By Ashley Penn, News Reporter

Grand Bahama once served as the cultural mecca of the country. However, over the years that reality has slowly faded into a thing of the past.

Cultural performances reigned supreme as far back as the 1960’s at establishments such as the Yellow Bird and the Bahamas Princess Resorts & Casino, but many locals say that Bahamian entertainment has continued to die, particularly in recent times.

In an effort to increase the pass time directly linked to the “glory days,” local entrepreneurs on the island are embracing the opportunity to bring back the cultural aspect to the island after a significant hiatus.

Cable Bahamas has a long-standing history of supporting Bahamian culture and that tradition will continue when the telecommunications company broadcasts the Bahamian folk opera ‘The Legend of Sammie Swain’ on Cable 12 this Sunday, September 28 at 7:30 p.m.

‘Sammie Swain,’ as performed by the 70-member revival cast at Shakespeare in Paradise 2013, will premiere exclusively on Cable 12 and will be featured on the channel throughout the month of October. The television special is sponsored by the Cable Bahamas Cares Foundation, Cable 12 and Shakespeare in Paradise.

The Bahamian stage production, written by E. Clement Bethel as a ballet in 1968, and later as a folk opera in 1983, tells the story of a disabled Cat Island man who falls in love with the village beauty and sells his soul to the devil to be with her.  The folk opera gained popularity among local audiences in the 1980s and is deemed a significant component of Bahamian culture.
