Junior School Boys Exposed to Technical Studies

BTVI’s Head of Department for Maths, Ron Clarke, assisting an L. W. Young student as he completes paperwork for entrance into the dual enrolment program.

Eleven boys from L. W. Young Jr. School have been chosen to participate in a dual enrollment program at The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI) as a special initiative to expose them to the art of painting, while providing the opportunity to channel their practical skills.

The ninth graders will participate in the 10-week program while simultaneously completing junior school.  The three classes include Introduction to Painting along with Maths and English on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8 am to 3 pm. According to BTVI’s Dean of Construction Trades, Alexander Darville, there is a misconception that people do not need formal education for painting; however there are many components including estimation and preparation of surfaces.

The initiative is the brainchild of L. W. Young’s vice-principal, Stephen McPhee, who noted that the initiative is a source of motivation for the students and an extra push for them to excel.

“My principal, Janet Nixon and the entire administrative team are very supportive of this initiative, recognizing that these students are social leaders, but not academically motivated.  However, they are practical learners.  We want to show them that learning can be fun for them and we need to create the environment for these students to bloom,” said Mr. McPhee.

“We believe a sense of self-worth would affect their academic and social behaviour,” he added.

Furthermore, Kenyetta Hepburn, mother of a 14-year-old participant, is optimistic about the program.  “I believe this will help these boys with their grades a lot. My son is already talented with his hands and it will give him an opportunity to see what his career choices are,” said Ms. Hepburn.

Another parent, Stacey Outten expressed her gratitude that her son has been given this chance; the mother of four feels it will help him to become more responsible.   Meanwhile, her 13-year-old son said, “I like painting.  My future looks brighter.  I’m excited to have been chosen,” he stated.

BTVI’s Painting and Decorating instructor, David Barry, taking a few moments to encourage one of the11 students from L. W. Young, who has enrolled into BTVI.

Painting and Decorating instructor, David Barry met with the youngsters prior to their official day of instruction and has already seen the difference a change of setting can produce.  Although the boys will only be introduced to the painting program, Mr. Barry hopes it ignites an interest to return to BTVI later.

“They’re excited to be in this environment.  I hope they will stay in the painting program; the point is to finish the program.  BTVI’s painting program is about preservation as well, so it’s much more than painting on a surface.  We do furnishing finishing and wall covering too, as the interior part of painting,” said Mr. Barry.

Additionally, Mr.  Darville is convinced the program will result in an improvement in the young men.  “We believe it will assist with their attempt at The Bahamas Junior Certificate (BJC) exams.  This is a gateway into the institution and the long-term goal is that they would eventually do Introduction to Interior Painting. This is how we change lives,” stated Mr. Darville.

Academic Dean, Pleshette McPhee echoed his sentiments, adding that the benefits of the initiative will be monumental. “Sometimes the schools may not be keeping them engaged and they may sometimes become a number.  They should be channeled into the direction of their talents.  We must harness the skills of our young children.  This program is into saving lives,” she stressed.

A flock of Purple Martins and an Empidonax Flycatcher were only two of the exciting bird species observed during the first-of-the-season South Abaco birdwatching outing. They were among an impressive number of species sighted that day.

Some birds spotted in the Treasure Cay area and on the way to Marsh Harbour by veteran ornithologist, Dr. Elwood Bracey, were also included in the count. All together over seventy five species of birds were sighted by a team of eleven people who met at the office of the Bahamas National Trust in Marsh Harbour at 7:00 am in the morning of September 20.

Caribbean male model gets recruited by US agency

By Arthia Nixon, The Ambassador Agency

(Chicago, Illinois)… Just a year after his runway debut, Caribbean-based model Kenneth Kerr has signed with Blake Martin’s Distinct Model Management. Kerr, who is a native of Freeport, Bahamas was recruited during the first round of presentations, an honor for a model, comparable with being selected in the first draft of a professional sports team.

“Kenneth is very much in demand even after I explain that he is unavailable or already booked,” says former model, mentor and manager Blake Martin. “Him being based in The Bahamas is not an issue for some of the designers who saw him at Chicago Men’s Fashion week. He is truly a Chicago favorite. I get calls often. Many designers want to work with him.”

Martin revealed that Kerr is already booked for next year’s Men’s Fashion Week and has a major project on the horizon in Miami. Kerr is the first model from the Caribbean to work with Martin who has talent based in London, Atlanta, New York, Miami, Detroit, Dallas and Chicago.

A former runway model himself, Martin himself was an instructor for America’s Next Top Model who has worked with many celebrities including Lady Gaga, Victoria’s Secret angel Sessilie Lopez and Will Smith.

“I am very confident with Kenneth,” he said of his newest protégé. “He has already booked with Andrew Christian, 2xist, Noral Apparel, Ray Vincente, and Llewellyn. I wasn’t aware that he was from The Bahamas when I met him in Illinois even though he knew a bit about me. I just knew after seeing him work that I wanted to work with him. He left an impression and he’s great for both print and the runway. I also like that he has a workable personality, he’s very determined and I look forward to seeing someone like that succeed. He also exemplifies fitness and health.”

Even though Kerr has ‘made it big’ by Caribbean standards and snagged a US-based agency, he still wants to focus on things local. He admitted that he plans to participate in Manhunt Bahamas because he wants to use his growing celebrity as a way to bring awareness to his country while spreading his message of healthy living.

Kerr’s social media posts are a testament to his transformation from high school dud to fitness fanatic stud. His followers join him at 4:30am to work out in the gym or ask him to share his health plans and homemade recipes that are now a part of his regiment.

“I just got my personal trainer certificate from the American Council on Exercise and I am excited about that,” he revealed. “Getting signed all well and good but I still feel that Manhunt Bahamas is a great platform for me. I’ve excelled internationally with Men's Fashion Week Chicago but there nothing like winning the respect and admiration of your countrymen. I feel I can be a good ambassador for the country as model given my experience and Manhunt can do just that for me. Other than that, I am excited to be with Blake Martin. In fact, I’m honored because I see him as both a mentor and a manager and every opportunity is to be embraced.”

BTVI Holds Pink Wednesday to Support Cancer Awareness

Pretty in Pink: BTVI’s Manager and Consultant, Dr. Iva Dahl has a pink ribbon tied in her hair.

The fight against cancer continues and the staff, faculty and students of The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI) joined in with their recent Cancer Awareness Day.

Team BTVI supported ‘Pink Wednesday,’ a community service event in an effort to bring further awareness to the prevalence of cancer and early detection of the deadly disease.

Organized by the Student Affairs department, the informative and exciting event was vital, as early detection is known to raise survival rates.  Student Affairs Coordinator, Racquel Bethel said it is imperative that young people take cancer awareness seriously.

“It is vitally important that our young people manage their own health.  Some of them feel because they are young, they are invincible, but simple measures such as watching one’s diet and check-ups can aid in making healthy choices,” said Ms. Bethel.

DELECTABLE cupcakes were on sale. All proceeds go to The Cancer Society of The Bahamas.

From pink cupcakes and cakes to pink lemonade and pedicures, BTVI’s Pink Wednesday was bigger than last year’s.  Helping to create a fun-filled environment was Mr. Brown impersonator and Prime Time Dion from ZNS Radio.  Many students, staff and faculty wore pink and visited the information table where campus nurse, Nursing Officer, Voreetis Barr provided information on breast cancer.

Additionally, a "Celebration of Life" wall was a feature of the day. Names and messages to cancer survivors and the families of those who passed on, were mounted.  There was also a poignant moment of silence, followed by the release of pink and white balloons into the air.

Moreover, Ms. Bethel underscored the importance of getting students to give back to the community.  All proceeds from Pink Wednesday will go to the Cancer Society of The Bahamas.

“We want to make our students good citizens.  People have cancer and they’re hurting, their families are hurting and we want to support the cause.  We want our students to pay it forward,” she said.

We Are Not a Christian Nation Constitutionally

The level of ignorance about our constitution is widespread and disturbing.  The ignorance is particularly alarming on the part of those who pretend to know about such matters, including certain pastors who repeatedly demonstrate a stunning ignorance of constitutional issues as well as certain inveterate writers of letters to the editor, not to mention certain uninformed radio talk show hosts.

Despite such wilful ignorance, we are constitutionally a secular state.  The preamble to the constitution has a Christian reference.  But the preamble has no legal force and is not dispositive in deciding constitutional questions.

Chapter I Article 1 of the constitution does have legal force.  It notes: “The Commonwealth of the Bahamas shall be a sovereign democratic State.”  Not a theocracy, not a Christian state, but a democracy.

Thanks to Janet Franklin for this guest post on their recent paper!  Really interesting to think back through these historical changes.

During the last Ice Age, the islands of the Bahamas were cooler, drier, and much larger than today because sea level was over 100 m lower.  The Bahamas also were much closer to the Greater Antillean islands of Cuba and Hispaniola.  Thousands of beautifully preserved bird fossils from dry and water-filled caves on the island of Abaco in the Bahamas have allowed us to reconstruct the bird community found there during the last Ice Age (10,000 or more years ago) and compare it with the birdlife on Abaco today.

(Atlanta, Georgia)…  The metro Atlanta area got a chance to see how to cook a Bahamian meal when Maurice Randal appeared as guest on a top rated NBC affiliate show. Randal was the featured chef on Atlanta & Company on 11Alive, where he  gave hostess Christine Pullora a taste of The Bahamas during the cooking segment.

Over 2 million viewers learned how to make a traditional Bahamian conch salad, Caribbean rice, pineapple fish fillet and chicken as Randal talked about his road from C.C. Sweeting student to Atlanta-based celebrity chef.

“It was a wonderful opportunity to showcase the islands,” said Randal. “It was an experience of a lifetime and it was very well received. There were people who were calling me and my publicist during the commercial break to let us know they were watching. Also my website, chefmaurice.net received quite a bit of hits. It was just great.”
