SCHOLARSHIP – Four Cat Islanders are on their way to higher education after being awarded scholarships by the Cat Island Sailing Association.  Standing from left to right are: Raphael Munroe, recipient; District Superintendent, Cat Island Rum Cay and San Salvador, Garth H. King; BTVI’s Manager and Consultant, Dr. Iva Dahl; President, Cat Island Sailing Association, Patrick Strachan and Principal, Old Bight High School, Jerome Forbes.  Seated are recipients: Donnamae Dean, Arley Merzius and Clifton Bullard.

Cat Island’s future is looking brighter as four young natives were recently awarded technical scholarships, thanks to the Cat Island Sailing Association.

Awarded were Clifton Bullard, Arley Merzius and Raphael Munroe, students already enrolled at The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI) along with Donnamae Dean, who will join them in spring 2015.  It was a huge moment for the association’s president, Patrick Strachan, who was able to tick off one of his goals for his 2013-2015 tenure.

Mr. Strachan said the scholarships were awarded to students who represent the future of Cat Island. “As president of the sailing club, I’ve always felt that the club ought to be known as something more than a group of people organizing a regatta.  I’m of the opinion that we ought to do things for the Cat Island community that will leave a lasting impression and help it to grow.  I believe that when you educate an individual, that will always remain with that person, unlike material things which will wither,” he stated.

Meanwhile, principal of Old Bight High School, Jerome Forbes, who flew into Nassau just for the presentation, was elated over the scholarships presented to his former students, Clifton and Arley, both of whom have six Bahamas General Certificates of Secondary Education (BGCSE’s).

“These two men could have chosen any other institution, but they chose BTVI.  They did their own research, telling me they want to become Electricians.  We thank the Cat Island Sailing Association for allowing them to fulfill their dreams,” said Mr. Forbes.

He expressed confidence that the two “promising young men” would attain the same level of success at BTVI which they attained in high school.

Also expressing confidence in the scholarship recipients was Manager and Consultant of BTVI, Dr. Iva Dahl, who took the opportunity to encourage them during their pursuits at the institution.  She added that Cat Island holds a special place in the heart of BTVI as it was the first Family Island on which the institution held a General Maintenance course.

Grateful for the opportunity, Clifton thanked the association on behalf of the recipients.  “We will represent Cat Island well.  We will live up to our end of the bargain.  Thank you. We will prove we deserve this,” said the former Heady Boy.

Additionally, District Superintendent for Cat Island, Rum Cay and San Salvador, Garth H. King said he was impressed with the association’s gesture to help the youngsters.  He noted that it is an investment into the futures of four promising Cat Islanders, who based on their high school records, are “well-rounded and gifted.”

While Clifton and Arley study Electronics Engineering Installers and Repairs, Raphael will complete studies in Auto Mechanics and Donnamae will focus on Cosmetology.

ENJOYING LIFE

For anyone that have been reading The Whole Woman Newsletter over the last five weeks, they would see the growth of the newsletter and the number of women that have come on board to make their contributions.

I am so happy about being a part of this because it is helping me to understand that no matter where you are in your life you can start something new and have it become a success.

At this stage in my life I am at a place where I have learned how important forgiveness is and how important it is to love yourself more than you love everyone else, because if you are not whole for yourself you cannot be the part you are meant to be for others.

When you are whole as a woman, you can be a better mother, lover, friend, sister and so much more.

Keshelle Kerr-Davis
By Arthia Nixon, The Ambassador Agency
for Creative Wealth Bahamas

Nassau, The Bahamas… With many in The Bahamas uncertain about the nation’s fiscal state, Keshelle Kerr-Davis is focusing on providing today’s youth with the tools needed to succeed in tomorrow’s economy. Set for December 7 -8, 2014 at Mario’s Bowling and Entertainment Center in New Providence, the Kids Only Christmas Sale is indeed topical as The Bahamas prepares to implement Value Added Tax (VAT).

Kerr-Davis is at the forefront in financial literacy in the Caribbean, especially as it pertains to youth. A keynote speaker and presenter for over a decade, her book ‘Your Child Can Become Wealthy’ went on to become a local bestseller as her Creative Wealth company expanded as the voice to explain money matters to youth. She also serves as they youngest ever appointed executive director of The Bahamas Chamber of Commerce’s Chamber Institute.

“This is now my sixth year doing this and this time it’s critical for kids and their parents to participate as the nation is implementing VAT,” said Kerr-Davis. “Parents and kids need to know now more than ever about money and how it works. They also need to know that as young business owners, there may be things they will have to consider when it comes to these economic changes.”

This year’s event will boast over 50 booths featuring youth-owned businesses, a parent’s corner, and a showing of the documentary ‘Startup Kids’.

Gabrielle Jordan Williams
The highlight will be guest speaker Gabrielle Jordan Williams who has won numerous awards since becoming a jewelry maker at seven, entrepreneur at nine, and published author/speaker at 11. Williams is the author of ‘The Making of a Young Entrepreneur: A Kid’s Guide to Developing The Mind-Set For Success’.

“I am excited to have Gabrielle join us this session,” said Kerr-Davis. “Sometimes, kids need to be motivated by seeing someone their own age or hearing it from someone not so much older than they are now. I am looking forward to what she will instill in the young people and at the same time what she will take away from her first visit as a presenter in The Bahamas.”

Berry Islanders Graduate from BTVI General Maintenance Course

BTVI’s Academic Dean, Pleshette McPhee, presents Pharon Winder with his General Maintenance course certificate.

Twenty-nine Berry Islanders recently made history as they were the first graduates of a General Maintenance course offered by The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI).

BTVI spread its wings to the island, offering the 16-week course that included the fundamentals of carpentry, plumbing, tiling and electrical installation; the course was offered each Friday evening and Saturday, spanning a 10-hour period per weekend.  The graduates included students of the R. N. Gomez All Age School and a few adults.

BTVI’s Academic Dean, Pleshette McPhee, noted during the ceremony held at St. Bartholomew’s Anglican Church, Bullocks Harbour, Berry Islands that with global competitiveness, higher education is becoming increasingly critical.

“Through tertiary education, individuals are armed with a multitude of skills relevant for improving their lives within a society.  As critical thinkers, entrepreneurs, innovators and engineers, educated citizens share the responsibility to be catalysts for change,” she said.

Ms. McPhee thanked the Berry Islands Homeowners Association, and the community at large, for playing an integral role in helping the participants.  “You ought to be commended. I urge you to continue to support and empower the youth because this is certainly the only way our future can be secured,” she stated.

Echoing those sentiments was R. N. Gomez’ principal, Brian Williams, who said the partnership with BTVI is just the beginning as they continue to help people fulfill their dreams.  He took the opportunity to encourage the graduates.  “Crime is out of control, but you are moving in the right direction.  Our future is bright. Our future is secured,” he stated.

Among those in attendance at the event were BTVI’s Dean of Construction Trades, Alexander Darville; Chief Councilor, Cardinal Rolle and Michelle Bowleg, Education District Superintendent.

R. N. Gomez’s principal, Brian Williams and president of the Berry Island Homeowners Association, William Kalis, listen attentively during BTVI’s graduation ceremony for 29 participants who completed a General Maintenance course.

Additionally, President of the Berry Island Homeowners Association, William Kalis expressed his continued support of such initiatives sponsored by the association.  He reminded the graduates that they are an important part of the world economy; therefore, they should give good customer service.

“Tourists go where they find value and we, as a small community, are competing on the world stage.  The world is our oyster.  We’re an integral part of the tourism economy and we can get our fair share, but we have to be focused on offering a competitive product,” said Mr. Kalis.

Meanwhile, Deputy Head Boy of R. N. Gomez, Pharan Winder, recognized the significance of the course and how it factors into his future.  “It was needed.  I will need some of these skills on the Defence Force and even on a daily basis,” said the 16-year-old.

“This can take me far.  I can show others what I have learned and build on my experience,” he added.

Janette Taylor, a 49-year-old, was beaming with excitement as she spoke of her experience.  “I have a building I am opening and can hook up lights, do some plumbing and some carpentry.  I’m so excited. It was very helpful and it made me feel young. Those teachers were so good,” she exclaimed.

BTVI previously conducted the same course in Harbour Island, Cat Island, Andros and Exuma.

Documentary of Bahamas School for Special Kids a hit at Film Festival

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – November 14, 2014  - “Every Child Counts “ the poignant and touching documentary about a school in The Bahamas providing an educational opportunity for children with special needs, recently premiered during the 29th Annual Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival,

The documentary written, produced and directed by Wendy Loten, a seasoned producer and director, tells the story of a school in Abaco Bahamas, founded by a resident of the community, Lynn Major.

Major the administrator of the school, along with her husband, adopted twin boys at the age of 3 1/2. The couple discovered that both boys had severe developmental delays and would need special education, and because the Island did not have an educational option for the twins, the MaJors determined to create an option.  The formation of the Special Ed school, ECC (Every Child Counts) was the result of Lyn Major’s determined efforts along with parents with similar needs, as well as the help of the local Catholic church’s Reverend Stan Kolasa, St. Francis De Sales and Dr. S. Kossack, of Florida International University.

The documentary chronicles many of the success stories of the school including that of children who were unable to talk, or walk and through the untiring efforts of the volunteers and teachers are able to live much improved lives.  Artistic talents and skills have been uncovered in some of the children, others have been successfully placed in jobs in the outside world and many of the current students even while in the midst of developmental challenges, are expressing awesome goals for their future.

A recurring visitor to The Bahamas since the age of 16, Canadian Wendy Loten, expressed that she was “captured by the work at ECC”, and decided to tell the story to introduce others to the triumph of the human heart and spirit. The President of Loten Media Inc., an independent company based in Burlington, Ontario, Loten has produced programming for every television network in Canada.  Her Awards include a Cable Ace Award nomination and Gemini Award nomination for the Nature Connection series.

When she decided to produce the ECC documentary, Loten called on her friend, Paul Mockler, who  has worked on hundreds of commercial, documentary and dramatic films throughout his extensive 35-year career.  Mockler, who was already in The Bahamas at the time, in Grand Bahama, Island, has done most of his productions underwater, and was somewhat new to the type of documentary Loten was asking his help with.  He agreed to work with Loten, and according to the cinematographer of the IMAX underwater children’s adventure, “Flight of the Aquanaut”, “Working on the ECC project was a labor of love that changed my life.”

The carefully crafted and touching drama was well received at the Film Festival with the inspirational drama bringing out a variety of emotions from the audience including the immediate offer by a number of persons to begin contributing to the ECC Program.

The documentary is expected to be aired in The Bahamas in January of 2015.

More information on ECC is available at http://www.everychildcountsabaco.org/home.html
