BTVI College Fair Attracts Scores of Students

BTVI students discuss information received from one of the colleges present at the institution’s recent college fair.

Despite inclement weather, scores of Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institution (BTVI) students flocked to the institution’s recent college fair to gain information inclusive of scholarship opportunities.

Present were Fanshawe College and Holland College, Canadian institutions, along with Bethune-Cookman University, located in Daytona Beach, Florida.  This was in addition to the Ministry of Education Scholarship and Educational Loans division, the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Lyford Cay Foundation.

“It was a one-stop shop where students learned what schools offer, but also what funding is available. These institutions weren’t randomly picked; they are a few of the colleges we are affiliated with through articulation agreements or Memorandums of Understanding,” said BTVI’s Student Affairs Coordinator, Racquel Bethel.

“We want our students to also make a connection that BTVI’s credits are accepted at Canadian and US colleges,” she added.

In spring 2014, three of BTVI students spent a semester at Holland College: Elkeno Jones studied Electrical Engineering and Ketley Brown focused on Information Technology, while Valentino Burrows was enrolled in the Energy Systems Engineering program.  Rashad Morley also spent the semester studying Electrical Engineering at Vancouver Island University while Gerrard Russell was at Fanshawe College studying Information Technology and Security for two semesters.

Meanwhile, Bethune-Cookman’s Associate Director of the Office of Admissions, Junell McCall said being present was a step in the right direction as her university does its part in higher education.

“We recognize how important it is to educate people of colour and we want to expand our reach.  We already have a healthy population of Bahamian students and we want to continue to offer our services to those who live abroad. We want to add to the Wildcats’ family,” she said excitedly.

Meanwhile, the room was buzzing as students chatted with representatives.  Office Administration major Aeisha Baker expressed excitement that so many opportunities abound.

“The fair literally sparked a passion in me to expand my horizons.  I see possibilities.  BTVI is equipping us for globalization and mobilization,” said the 27-year-old.

Furthermore, Electrical Installation student, Miguel Mackey stated that only because he attended the college fair, he is now aware of some of the scholarships and grants offered by The Bahamas government.

“I learned about the technical scholarships available, which would lessen the burden on me.  I don’t feel hopeless.  I have a chance now to pursue my purpose,” said the 21-year-old who wants to study Biomechatronics.

Kyle Ferguson, who is also studying Electrical Installation, described the fair as “refreshing,” adding that although he always achieves over a 3.00 grade point average (GPA) each semester, he has to work harder if he is to avail himself of the scholarship opportunities.

Bethune-Cookman’s Associate Director of the Office of Admissions, Junell McCall has a chat about the historically black college with a BTVI student.

BTVI students stopped by the Ministry of Education’s Scholarship and Educational Loans division table to speak with Kareem Bowe about technical scholarships and grants.

Junkanoo Carnival Launched in Port Lucaya:
Costumes to be Sold Online Worldwide

By Robyn Adderley
Bahamas Information Services

FREEPORT, Grand Bahama – Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Perry G. Christie, gave the Junknaoo Carnival costumes presented high praise during the official launch of Junkanoo Carnival on Friday in Port Lucaya.

“I knew that Grand Bahama was going to come tough, but little did I imagine that I would see such array of beauty and grace and charm.”

Prime Minister Christie said he has been a Junkanoo artist himself, and he is someone who has always been and still is the best dancer in Junkanoo in The Bahamas. With the encouragement of the crowd, the Prime Minister then did the ‘Christie Shuffle’ to cheers and applause.

He said, “We decided that we wanted to merge the Carnival concept with Junkanoo, and we wanted to give both men and women who slaved away at Junkanoo, an opportunity to make and sell costumes not just in The Bahamas, but online around the world.

“We want thousands of Americans and others to come in to play with us during our Junkanoo Carnival season. And what is happening this evening is simply an example of the kind of costumes that Grand Bahama is putting forward.”

Freeport, Grand Bahama, he said, is ready, and this news he is taking back to Nassau to share with those participating there.

Prime Minister Christie then called Mrs. Ginger Moxey to the stage. He added, she said she would take on the responsibility of coordinating the event in Grand Bahama. He congratulated her on the work done so far.

He said that the last time he came to Grand Bahama, he had mentioned that the initial stages of the event will take some funding. The Band from Freeport, he continued, will be a combination of the Junkanoo groups merging with others, and one group will travel to New Providence for the parade.

“It is going to cost them because initially they may not sell as many costumes as they could. It’s going to cost them to travel and be accommodated in New Providence.”

The Minister for Grand Bahama, the Hon. Dr. Michael Darville, Mrs. Moxey and the co-coordinator for Grand Bahama, Felix Stubbs, will be working to ensure adequate funding happens.

Letters and phone calls will be made, he said, so that “this high quality demonstration that we have here is supported by hundreds of young people coming from Freeport, coming from West End, coming from East End all coming to New Providence to claim Junkanoo Carnival next May.”

Introducing the Prime Minister was Tourism Minister, the Hon. Obadiah Wilchcombe, who said in May, Junkanoo Carnival will be “the most fantastic show” the country has ever seen with all of the fun beginning in Grand Bahama.

“All of you know that Junkanoo is our major celebration and we’ve decided to bring Junkanoo together with Carnival to allow a taste of The Bahamas to mix with what happens around the world, but in particular, throughout the Caribbean.

“We want people to come and enjoy this wonderful country. Enjoy our wonderful culture and to see our wonderful people and our love of artistry. We are going to have the greatest event and we want every Bahamian to participate because our Carnival allows everyone to get on board to march, to have fun and to enjoy the celebration.”

Minister Wilchcombe said the idea was that of Prime Minister Christie who felt more needed to be done for Junkanoo. “We needed to do more to ensure that our country is promoted around the world and so he said let us now introduce Junkanoo Carnival.”

Many government officials and businesspersons were present to witness the unveiling of the prototype costumes. There was also the announcement of the event scheduled for April 17-18, 2015 at Taino Beach – ‘A Grand Life’ weekend, which will include: Music Masters Semi-Final Concerts, Midnight Rush, and a Beach Party.

The major event slated for Nassau will be May 7 through 9, 2015.

REGIONAL TRAINING – The Utilities Regulation and Competition Authority (URCA) is sponsoring two technical education students to the Regional Youth Information and Communications Technology (ICT) workshop in Antigua and Barbuda December 8th – 10th.  From left to right: Floyd Mullings, Bahamas Baptist Community College (BBCC) computer lecturer; Racquel Bethel, Student Affairs Coordinator, The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI); Gerrard Russell, BTVI student; Kathleen Smith, URCA’s Chairman; Antonio Rahming, BBCC student; Dr. Celestine Williams, BBCC’s president and Mavis Johnson-Collie, URCA’s Corporate and Consumer Relations Manager.

The Utilities Regulation and Competition Authority (URCA) has made it possible for two technical education students to enhance their knowledge of the rapidly developing area of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) through a regional workshop.

The two recipients are Gerrard Russell, who studies Information Technology Management Security and Server Plus at The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI) and Antonio Rahming who is a Computer Information Systems major at The Bahamas Baptist Community College (BBCC).  The duo will represent The Bahamas at the Regional Youth ICT Innovations Training Workshop in Antigua and Barbuda December 8th through 10th.

According to URCA’s CEO, Kathleen Smith, the support is in keeping with the authority’s objective to promote the involvement of young people in the use and creative development of ICT.  “We look forward to Gerard and Antonio’s return and to their sharing of any new and innovative ideas about how they can best use ICT to further the development of their entrepreneurial aspirations, involve more young men and women in the sector and enhance their level of productivity in their current studies or job environment,” said Ms. Smith.

Ms. Smith expressed that URCA is particularly excited that the workshop will also address youth employment and entrepreneurship.

Gerrard who wants to eventually launch a security audit company expressed his eagerness to attend the workshop.

“I am looking to gain new, innovative ideas that I can bring back to The Bahamas and I want to be a part of reducing the global cost of IT.  I’m also excited that BTVI paved the way for me and for my future,” he stated.

His counterpart, Antonio, hopes to build on his IT knowledge and raise awareness about ICT initiatives, adding that it’s an ever-changing field.

Workshop participants will address implications of ICT use and adoption with an emphasis on innovative technology, examining the role markets play in the development and distribution of ICT infrastructure and services, and the conditions which lead to reduced investment risk and increased investment in the ICT sector.  Furthermore, participants will be challenged to develop ideas for ICT-enabled, socially responsible businesses and programs that can be initiated by young people, in addition to introducing the fundamentals of developing business plans and team proposals.

Racquel Bethel, Student Affairs Coordinator, The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI); Gerrard Russell, BTVI student; Kathleen Smith, URCA’s Chairman and Mavis Johnson-Collie, URCA’s Corporate and Consumer Relations Manager.

The training is being organized by the Telecommunication Development Bureau of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in collaboration with the Caribbean Association of National Telecommunications Organization (CANTO).  The workshop is geared towards youth who wish to pursue a career in the ICT industry, those who have businesses in the ICT industry or those who wish to gain ICT related skills.
