NASSAU, Bahamas -- When Andros-based artist Judith Papillon faces a blank canvas, she merely looks beyond it to see the cerulean sea that is her back yard. As she works re-creating the swirling blues and greens of the water, the powder-soft sand, the brilliant sky above, her brush flows as smoothly, as gently, as the waves flow to the lee shore. The result – breathtaking visuals that make you want to sink your feet into the sand, dip your toes in the water and close your eyes to make time stand still.

Students Get HIV/AIDS Reality Check

Eleuthera, Bahamas – Saturday, December 6, 2014, more than 70 students on Eleuthera attended an HIV/AIDS awareness event that would give them a serious reality check.

Sponsored by a grant to One Eleuthera Foundation from the US Embassy and PEPFAR (President’s Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief), “Body Talk” is an awareness project that consisted of t-shirt design and poem competitions and a youth rally that sought to educate the public and decrease the stigma of HIV/AIDS throughout communities on Eleuthera. Saturday’s rally consisted of a series of poem readings, song and drama performances and an educational presentation which outlined what the disease is, how it is transmitted, its effects and how it can be prevented.

During the program a major breakthrough occurred when an HIV positive male from Eleuthera spoke about his experiences with the disease. He talked about his personal struggle with HIV and how people have verbally mistreated and shunned him. “This broke my spirit. Sometimes all I could do was cry. I even contemplated taking my life”, he said.

This was a turning point for students as they empathized with him. Flowing tears and the evidence of those being held back showed that this brave gentleman got through to these students. Many reached out for hugs because now they knew he could not transmit his disease to them. They knew that pushing him away and saying mean things would hurt him. It was clear at these moments that the information received and the experience these children had would be burnt on their brains for some time.

“On the way home my nephew couldn’t stop talking about his experience. This is the most powerful event of its kind that I have attended on Eleuthera this year”, one attendee said.

Part of the affair also included award presentations to the winners and participants of the t-shirt and poem competitions held two months prior to the event. The winners of the t-shirt competition, from first to third place respectively, were Rajeave Armbrister, Tyreik Leary and Trayuan Alyenne all students at Preston Albury High School. Winners for the poem competition, from first to third place respectively, were Jerrimia Seymour and Gervontae Kelly both students at Central Eleuthera High School and Sidhira Johnson a student at Deep Creek Middle School.

UNAIDS notes that The Bahamas has the highest prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean. The primary cause for the spread of HIV in the country is through sex. This is believed to be due to a lack of knowledge concerning safer sex practices. Research shows that education regarding the disease transmission, risk factors, and preventive strategies is effective in slowing the spread of HIV.

“According to statistics provided by the Department of Public Health, Eleuthera ranks 4th out of the entire Bahamas in regard to HIV/AIDS infections. Such events are needed to assist in the decline of HIV/AIDS infections and reduce the stigma associated with being HIV positive”, said One Eleuthera Foundation employee and one of the coordinators for the HIV/AIDS project, Shapreka Clarke.

The US Embassy, PEPFAR, One Eleuthera Foundation, Eleuthera Arts & Cultural Center and Space to Create encourages the public to spread the word, not the disease by using protection when engaging in sexual activities and refrain from mistreating persons who are infected with the disease. The best thing you can do is show them love and affection.

The Sir Victor Sassoon (Bahamas) Heart Foundation and The Heart Ball Committee are pleased to announce that nominations are now being accepted for the Lady Sassoon Golden Heart Award.

Since 1968, the Lady Sassoon Golden Heart has been presented at the Annual Heart Ball. The award was initiated by The Heart Foundation to applaud and give recognition to individuals who have selflessly given of themselves to promote human welfare and dignity, thus making life better for their fellow men. Oftentimes, these individuals go unrecognized by the wider community for their efforts; they don’t ask for anything in return for their generosity. In most cases, they go beyond the call of duty, working outside of their normal scope of work, to impact our nation’s social, education, health and economic systems.

This Christmas as you make plans, think about that person who has made a difference and submit a nomination for them to win The Lady Sassoon Golden Heart Award.

Under the patronage of Her Excellency Dame Marguerite Pindling, Governor General, and The Right Honourable Perry Gladstone Christie, Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, and Mrs. Bernadette Christie, the 2014 / 2015 Heart Ball Committee will host the 51st Annual Heart Ball on Saturday, February 14, 2015. The Annual Heart Ball is the major fund-raiser for The Heart Ball Committee. The funds raised from this event help to repair the hearts of children. The theme for this Ball is, “Affairs of the Heart….Sustaining Heart Beats, One at a Time”.  The public is encouraged to help to repair a child’s heart, while spending Valentine’s with family and friends at the Annual Heart Ball.

One of the highlights of the evening is the presentation of the Lady Sassoon Golden Heart Award. Additionally, guests can look forward to an evening filled with love, laughter, fine foods, dancing, prizes and surprises. There will be live band and orchestral performances by the S-G Band and The RBDF Dance Band. Guests can end the evening with special music by Gary “Super” Johnson.

Most recently, Mrs. Shelagh Pritchard won the 2014 Lady Sassoon Golden Heart Award.  She, along with her predecessors, was chosen from a pool of worthy candidates, to be the winners of this award.  According to R E Barnes, Chairman of the Heart Foundation, “The many people who have worked with Shelagh Pritchard praised her with wonderful complements. She is the go to girl for churches of every denomination, orphanages, homes for the elderly, the AIDS camp, The Bahamas Red Cross, Inner Wheel, Rotary Club of East Nassau and a number of other organizations.  She is described as being a tireless worker and a great networker to get things taken care of for every cause imaginable”.

In acceptance speech at the 50th Heart Ball Mrs. Pritchard said, “It’s not about us…it is about helping those in need”. She went on to say, “The ability to shape a better tomorrow lies in our hands”.

As the year 2015 fast approaches, if you know a person like Mrs. Pritchard,  you are invited to submit a nomination, to be accompanied by a letter or statement explaining why the person recommended should receive the award. Nominations are to be submitted to:

The Golden Heart Award Committee
P. O. Box N-8189
Nassau, The Bahamas

Alternatively, submissions can be hand delivered to Grosham Property, EVES, Cable Beach. This is the office site for The Sir Victor Sassoon (Bahamas) Heart Foundation.

The Deadline for nominations is Friday, January 16th, 2015.

Four BTVI students are headed to Canada for two semesters. Standing from left to right are: Lynderia Clarke and Renel Pierre, both of whom will study Electrical Installation at Vancouver Island University, while Cordelia Dean and Mystique Stevenson are on their way to Fanshawe College to participate in the institution’s Computer Systems Technician program.  Seated are BTVI’s Student Affairs Coordinator, Racquel Bethel, who will be participating in Fanshawe College’s faculty exchange program for two weeks and BTVI’s Manager and Consultant, Dr. Iva Dahl.

Four students of The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI) are being afforded the opportunity to study in Canada for two semesters on Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP) scholarships.

Lynderia Clarke and Renel Pierre will both be studying Electrical Installation at Vancouver Island University, while Cordelia Dean and Mystique Stevenson will be in the Computer Systems Technician program at Fanshawe College.  The scholarships, granted by the Canadian government, provide Latin America and Caribbean students with short-term exchange opportunities at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
BTVI’s Coordinator of Student Affairs, Racquel Bethel will also be headed to Fanshawe College on a two-week faculty exchange.

Furthermore, all four students expressed excitement about heading to Canada for the spring 2015 semester, with Lyderia and Renel leaving as early as New Year’s Day.  Lynderia is looking forward to the wealth of knowledge which awaits her and the opportunity to explore a different culture, while Renel is still reveling in the idea that he will be leaving The Bahamas for the first time.

Mystique said it never crossed her mind that she could be a BTVI student and be presented with the chance of studying abroad for two semesters.  “I’m appreciative of being selected.  I intend to make BTVI proud,” she stated.

BTVI’s Manager and Consultant, Dr. Iva Dahl, encouraged the students to make new friends during the eight months and gain a wider experience through integration of cultures, but she also advised them to uphold high standards.

“Don’t throw caution to the wind because it’s a foreign country.  Don’t do anything you wouldn’t do at home.  And academically, if you’re struggling, there is help.  Take advantage of tutoring,” she stated.

Dr. Dahl further encouraged the students to seek to attain their Red Seals - Canada’s highest trade certification  - as the Canadian Electrical Code Part I is the electrical code adopted by The Bahamas.

Meanwhile, BTVI’s Isaiah Strachan and Diane Smith have just completed their semester-long stint at Holland College in Canada, where they both studied Electronics Engineering.  The student exchange, which began in 2009, requires BTVI students to be full-time and following the experience, they are to return to BTVI to complete their studies.
