Bahamian Artist Crafts Real 'Reborn' Baby Dolls

Tribune Features Writer

AT FIRST glance Lorna Miller’s silicone babies look real. They have sculpted arms and legs, hair that appears to grow out of the scalp, realistic skin tones and facial expressions. These life-like qualities of her baby and child sculptures have fooled many. When this happens, the Bahamian artist’s goal is achieved - tricking the human eye.

Lorna began sculpting in 1990 after visiting a doll shop. The first sculptures she did were children. In 2000 she caught the “baby bug” and now all of her sculptures are infants.

On Thursday February 7th, in the Glory Banks Art Gallery at the Rand Nature Centre on East Settlers Way, members of the Grand Bahama Artists Association (GBAA). present their annual art exhibition just for the love of art.

Once again their Art Exhibition includes a wide variety of exciting new artworks from artists whose names and works are known to the community along with several newcomers. The opening reception at 7 pm will be an opportunity to mix and mingle with the artists and discuss their work and techniques.

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, art may not be the usual gift on Valentine’s Day but it is a much longer lasting gift than flowers or chocolates. At least that is the thought the members of the GBAA. Everyone is invited to come and see if they agree. .

Parents and teachers are invited to introduce their children to the wonderful world of art during the month of February – just for the love of art.

The Valentine Art Exhibition continues until February 28th to provide the community the opportunity to experience the rich art culture available on the island. Admission to the Gallery is free. The Rand Nature Centre is open Monday to Friday 8.30 to 4.30 pm and Saturday until 2 pm.

Surviving in The Bahamas: A Haitian Boy Strives for Brighter Future

Treasure Cay, Abaco, Bahamas — The Abaco Boat Tragedy has attracted more headlines than the usual because this is a human smuggling story where many young children drowned.

As a Bahamian writer focused on the struggles of Caribbean people and their relationship to their neighbor to the north, the tragedy compelled me to action. I made my way to Treasure Cay, Bahamas to find Erode Joseph, a 19-year old survivor of the overcrowded boat “Glory Time” that sank.

The incident was reported like most of the human smuggling stories originating from the Bahamas: a grossly overcrowded boat of desperate Haitians embarks from a clandestine location hoping and praying they reach the shores of America for a better life. The boat capsizes and those who cannot swim drown. Bloated bodies are found in the waters, wrapped in body bags, and dragged to shore. The local clergy and politicians send condolences to the often unknown relatives, some of whom experience the additional agony of not being able to bury their loved ones because of fears of deportation.

The unidentified bodies are laid to rest in a mass burial ceremony. There are calls for stiffer penalties for human smuggling, but they fade out as the days and months go by without legitimate arrests.
