38 Year-old Caribbean Singer Mr. J Discusses His Virginity In New Single

Mr. J’s “I’m A Virgin” Music Video Set For Valentine’s Day Release

By Arthia Nixon, Ambassador News Agency for Mr. J

Photo from Mr. J’s I’m A Virgin music video.

(Nassau, The Bahamas) When Steve Carrel awkwardly dealt with his virginity woes in the 2005 film The 40 Year Old Virgin, it was a comedy at its finest as friends tried to pressurehis character Andy to ‘give it up’. Ultimately, the film ended with Andy’s deflowering, but only after his character got married to the woman of his affections.

Mr. J’s I’m A Virgin music video will be released on Valentine’s day.

Sure the hair waxing scene in the movie was classic comedy, but the main joke for movie goers was the fact that an adult male chose, for whatever reason, to remain a virgin beyond his teens and twenties. Most find it abnormal if someone confesses to have not engaged in sexual activity by the time they are 30, yet at 38 years-old, Haitian-Bahamian musician Mr. J has no problem being a (nearly) 40 year-old virgin. In fact, he’s known locally as the singer with the abstinence ‘til marriage agenda.

Help Abaco - Go Native!

Abaco boasts a wide variety of plants, animals, and other living things. This is our biological diversity or “biodiversity”  for short. Unfortunately, our biodiversity is currently under threat from habitat destruction and invasive species. And, as our health is directly related to the health of the environment, that means we are also under threat.

To help protect Abaco’s biodiversity, Friends of the Environment has started a project called “Go Native!”. This project supports the planting of native plants for landscaping and encourages businesses and homeowners to remove invasive plants and replace them with natives. In addition to affecting biodiversity and taking over native habitat, some invasive plants, such as Casuarina, also accelerate erosion.

To join the Go Native program, all you have to do is send us a photo of you removing Hawaiian seagrape (and other invasive plants) from your property. We will then give you some native plants to help you get started, and a cool sign that says “Gone Native!” to show your participation. We’ll share the photo on our website and Facebook page to help encourage others to participate.

The first business participant of the Go Native program is The Abaco Inn on Elbow Cay.  In an effort to improve the grounds, manager Tom Hazel has removed 60 truckloads of Hawaiian seagrape! This is an impressive commitment to the environment, for which we applaud The Abaco Inn. FRIENDS looks forward to further partnership with The Abaco Inn and other businesses to help Abaco’s environment by planting native.

If you, your business or place of employment would like to help Abaco’s environment by “Going Native!”, please contact Friends of the Environment or visit our website for more information. This project is supported by the GEF Small Grants Programme (http://www.sgpbahamas.org/).

Missing man: Henry Leroy Cooper

Concern For Bahamian Man Missing In Canada Since November
By Arthia Nixon, Ambassador News Agency

(Nassau, The Bahamas) Uncertain as to why they have not heard from Henry Leroy Cooper in three months, a family in The Bahamas is desperate, hoping that they can find closure or at least a clue as to his whereabouts.

“The last time we saw or heard from him was in November 2012,” says his nephew Marcus Cooper, an accountant with a law firm owned by a well known Bahamian politician. “It’s not like him at all and I guess the time lapsed because one person thought the other was in contact and so on so forth. We are all here in The Bahamas and we need someone to figure out what is going on.”

Cooper said that his uncle’s address is Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada but he was last known to be at a halfway house in Ontario.

“My cousin, his son, went to local authorities but he was told to try and get more information on his own and then report back to police,” said Cooper. “Another officer told him to contact the non-emergency police and see if he could file a nationwide missing persons report with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Efforts were made but we haven’t gotten a clue as to what is going on.”

Cooper also noted that the family called his uncle’s number but it was answered by someone else. Frustrated, he finally contacted a publicist friend to assist in getting the word and photo out.

“This is a 62 year-old man we are talking about here,” Cooper said of his uncle. “We are not sure what happened or what else we need to do but we just need answers. We can’t just up and travel to join in the search like we want to but we do need to find out just what happened.”

Cooper is asking anyone with information or assistance to reach him at 1-242-636-4866 or to call Henry’s sister Normalee Johnson at 1-242-332-2829.

Nassau, Bahamas - Galleries and artists are gearing up for Nassau’s most exciting event in visual art—the Transforming Spaces art tour. Tickets are now on sale for this two day bus tour set for March 16th and 17th which will be making stops at eight participating galleries.

Last year’s tour under the theme of “Fibre” challenged artists to use indigenous materials in innovative ways, treating viewers to a fascinating exploration of local materials and impressive displays. This year, the tour will revert to its traditional format where each participating gallery curates their own space, spotlighting and celebrating Bahamian art through a wide cross-section of artists and practices.

The tour will begin earlier at 9:30 am and have a new point of departure. Whereas in years past, patrons gathered at the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas, they will now depart from Dockendale House on West Bay Street in buses provided by Bahamas Experience Tours (the event’s official transportation Sponsor), allowing for the NAGB to become a formal stop on the tour with their exhibition “Single Sex”. Offering a range of interpretations on portraits of females exclusively by female artists, the NAGB display will provide a refreshing spin on traditional portraiture.

242’s Golden Boy Of Gospel, Jonathan Farrington Inks Record Deal With Elevation Records
By Arthia Nixon, The Ambassador Agency for Elevation Records

Jonathon Farrington signs his contract, making him an official part of Elevation Records, as CEO Vincent ‘V-Mac’ McDonald looks on.

(Nassau, Bahamas) With his hit song I’m Gonna Wait already climbing charts in The Bahamas, Jonathan Farrington is taking his music to the next level by signing a contract with Elevation Records. Dubbed 242’s Golden Boy Of Gospel, Farrington is already a familiar face with the label as he has done lead and backup vocals with the Elevation Band.  He also works closely with Elevation Productions CEO Vincent ‘V-Mac’ McDonald, as a judge on 242Untapped, a Bahamas-based reality show that seeks the next gospel superstar singer.

“I am very enthused and excited about signing with Elevation Records,” says Farrington.  “This is really a defining movement in my life and I truly feel that I have reached a point in my life where I am walking into my purpose. I was born to do this. I was created for this and I am going to give it my best.”

Farrington added that he is excited about taking his music to the next level and branching beyond The Bahamas.

“This signing provides me with an opportunity to reach so many more people and establish myself in the US, Caribbean and share my music with the world,” he beamed. “I see this door opening as a way to bless and inspire people in the midst of the challenges they face. I am geared towards motivating this generation.”

Jonathon Farrington (right) shakes on it after signing recording contract with Vincent ‘V-Mac’ McDonald’s Elevation Records.
It’s been a whirlwind couple of months for the singer known as Jonny. He’s still being recognized as the overall spokesmodel winner for local telephone company BTC and is the newest ‘it boy’ on the gospel scene having sang with the award-winning Shaback and backing up Damita on her visit to The Bahamas. He also performed as a part of the ensemble backing up BeBe Winans in his tribute to Sir Sidney Poitier. The legendary Oscar winner is a Bahamian who was recently received several accolades in his native country including having a bridge named for him.

For his 23rd birthday last month, Farrington, who is a graduate of C.V. Bethel High School released his music video for I’m Gonna Wait. Though delighted with the new opportunities, he admits that V-Mac has been putting him to work in studio to produce his full length project.

“I’ve been working [with V-Mac] before I got signed but now that the ink is dry, I am seeing things from a different perspective,” said Farrington.  “We are in this full force and I’m excited.”
