BTVI students schooled in social netiquette

Assistant Superintendent of Police, Detective Mark Barrett

“Think before you post.” That was the simple, yet thought-provoking message Assistant Superintendent of Police, Detective Mark Barrett wanted to ingrain in the minds of students recently.

The officer of 26 years was speaking to an Entrepreneurship Prep class at the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI) during which time he sent a strong caution to social media users.

“We have to be careful who we interact with. Do you know your 500 followers – people who are looking at your photos each day?” he questioned.

“Yet you’re sharing your life,” he said matter-of-factly to the students.

Detective Barrett, who is in charge of the Business and Technology Crime section of the Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBDF) warned that sharing too much can lead to cyber bullying.  While sharing the pitfalls of social media, the officer urged the class to be responsible when posting photos or comments, adding that cyber bullying is widespread with issues as far as Bimini and Inagua.

“Cyber bullying does not discriminate.  Bullying is not just physical in nature. Words do hurt. Much of what we say, malign the reputation of others; it is a form of bullying. Those words replay in the mind, having a psychological effect,” he said.

The detective said there is the belief that one will have anonymity after writing disparaging comments but defamation of character can result in two years imprisonment and a $10,000 fine.

BTVI students were encouraged to safeguard their social networking profiles.

Surprised by some of the information, Office Administration major Jessica King said it changed her perspective.  “I have over 1,000 friends on Facebook, but it opened my eyes that I need to start deleting some of them. I don’t even know a quarter of them,” she confessed.

“Most shocking was the younger girls posting certain photos. It disturbed me knowing they’re so young.  The wider public needs to know about the dangers involved,” said the 17-year-old.

Her classmate, Antonique Munroe emphasized that such seminars need to be held in schools throughout the country.  “From this year rolled in, I decided to deal with social media differently but after hearing what he said today, I realize it even more,” said the 30-year-old.

“If we don’t know each other, it doesn’t make sense adding each other. I knew things were drastic, but I didn’t know they were this drastic.  It was very informative,” said Antonique.

Meanwhile, Dean of Student Services, Racquel Bethel, said she and her team thought it important to host the timely seminar, particularly as people need to safeguard themselves in this technologically advanced world.

“We want our students to properly manage their social media accounts and not become victims.  Their information goes beyond their circles.  It was a wake-up call for students to realize the devices in their hands may seem personal but hitting the send button releases the power from you to the hands of even predators,” said Mrs. Bethel.

Students listened intently to Assistant Superintendent of Police, Detective Mark Barrett as he discussed the pitfalls of social media.  To his right is BTVI instructor, Kramer Taylor.

Echoing Mrs. Bethel’s sentiments was instructor, Kramer Taylor, who challenged his students to delete 100 followers from their Facebook accounts who they do not know personally. He too recognized that some people share information that is too sensitive.

“You have folks even in their 30s and 40s sharing information or photos that are unethical or illegal. It’s not the type of culture we want to perpetuate,” he said.

(Atlanta, Georgia)…Minister of Foreign of Affairs to the Commonwealth of The Bahamas Fred Mitchell is on a brief diplomatic tour of metro Atlanta, where he is meeting with government officials, civil rights leaders and business executives, in what has been described as a “great dialog” that will positively impact both regions.

Among those attending a luncheon with Min. Mitchell was Andre Dickens, Atlanta City Council Member; Rashida Winfrey, Mosiac Advisors Financial Management CEO; Michael Ross, Program Manager for Hartsfield Jackson International Airport; Cassius Butts, Regional Director Small Business Administration; Leona Davenport, Atlanta Business League CEO; and Tommy Dortch, entrepreneur. Also in attendance was Tim Waddell, the Development Manager for Popeye’s fast food chains who is a key player in the company’s expansion into The Bahamas and the Bahamas Popeye’s Bowl. Rounding out the list of luncheon attendees were representatives of The Bahamas Consulate General’s Office of Atlanta, namely Consul General Randy E. Rolle and Deputy Consul Monique Vanderpool.

Min. Mitchell engaged in talks about current events, issues, tourism growth and challenges.
“Atlanta is the heart and center of government, business and social trends when it comes to the southeast United States,” said Rashida Winfrey. “We’re already seeking to have an expanded conversation and even go down to The Bahamas to see firsthand how we can positively impact folks. There is so much we can do when it comes to partnerships in education, principle industries, agriculture and more.”

“Minister Mitchell’s visit gave us the opportunity at our office to introduce him to those we have developed an amicable partnership with as well as those who seek to network, invest and collaborate with The Bahamas and Bahamians,” stated Consul General Rolle. “Overall, the luncheon proved a great occasion for us to exchange ideas and gave us an opportunity to further converse with leaders in the City of Atlanta and The Bahamas.”

Chairman of the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI), Felix Stubbs, wishes to announce that a Presidential Search Committee has been appointed by the institution’s board to find a president, pursuant to Section 7 of the BTVI Act 2010.

The individual will replace Dr. Iva Dahl, who has headed the institution for nearly 10 years and is expected to be in place for the 2015/2016 school year.

“In the interest of transparency, an open search will be conducted to field a wide selection of viable candidates,” said Mr. Stubbs.

The Presidential Search Committee is comprised of stakeholders from across the BTVI community, inclusive of:

Mrs. Rubie Nottage, Chairperson and Board Director;
Mrs. Thelma Grimes, Board Director;
Mr. Kevin Basden, Board Director;
Mrs. Myriam Stapleton, BTVI Alumni Representative;
Dr. Ted Sofianos, External Professional Educator Representative;
Mrs. Alicia Thompson, BTVI Administration Representative;
Mr. Charles Kemp, BTVI Instructor representative and
Ms. Donette Sinclair, Board Secretary

A presidential profile will outline the desired qualifications and qualities of the prospective president and will be the benchmark for the ideal candidate. That profile will be published shortly via BTVI’s website and newspaper advertisements.

“The presidential profile will act as a guide as we seek a Bahamian candidate of excellence. We’re hoping that a large pool of candidates will be attracted to apply for the position,” said Mrs. Nottage.

The Presidential Search Committee will compile a preliminary list of candidates from which a shortlist will be generated.  The top three to four candidates will be invited to be interviewed by the Search Committee.  Subsequently, the Committee will recommend the top candidate to the BTVI Board for appointment by the Governor-General as President of the Institute pursuant to the BTVI Act, 2010.
