The Queen's Commonwealth Day Message 2015 (Video)

The following is the message from HRH Queen Elizabeth on Commonwealth Day 2015:

One simple lesson from history is that when people come together to talk, to exchange ideas and to develop common goals, wonderful things can happen. So many of the world's greatest technological and industrial achievements have begun as partnerships between families, countries, and even continents. But, as we are often reminded, the opposite can also be true. When common goals fall apart, so does the exchange of ideas. And if people no longer trust or understand each other, the talking will soon stop too.

"I am in three shows are all ending this week if you have not had the opportunity to see them:

PARADISE.jpg, site specific installation, Jamaica Biennial, Kingston.

My commissioned work for the Jamaica Biennial, PARADISE.jpg is on display in locations all around downtown Kingston. The project, made possible with the support of the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas and the National Gallery of Jamaica, uses large-scale poster graphics to cover disused sites with a continuous digitally manipulated seascape. On until March 15.

The group exhibition The Presence of Absence curated by Paul Carey-Kent at Berloni gallery includes my work along with that of 13 other artists. The works in this show turn around a parallel feature of content as opposed to form: namely, what is not present is at least as important as what is present in the work. On until March 14.

Untitled, combs, Studio Voltaire OPEN.

Also, I have been chosen by artist Cory Arcangel and curator Hanne Mugaas for the Studio Voltaire OPEN in London bringing together a group of 12 artists with a strong identity and unique voice. "Basically, we selected artworks that really popped out to us – works that we would like to live with in our own home." On until March 15.

Please click on the links to get more information on each show."

Many thanks,

Bahamian Innovator’s Next Phenom product advances to finals in international competition

Marques Williams, creator of NextPhenom
By Arthia Nixon, The Ambassador Agency

(Panama City, Panama) A young entrepreneur from The Bahamas was selected from over 2,730 international entrants as one the 32 finalists in this year’s Talent and Innovation Competition of the Americas. Marques Williams, who conceptualized NextPhenom, an online stage for amateur athletes will be headed to Panama City, Panama April 7 – 9, 2015 to present his product in the Economic Innovation category of the competition.

TIC Americas is an international entrepreneurship support platform and business accelerator for young entrepreneurs and business startups. It is developed and implemented by the Young Americas Business Trust (YABT) with support from the Organization of American States (OAS) and their international partners, PepsiCo, CBC, and Postobón. Categories of competition includeSocial Innovation, Economic Innovation and Eco-Challenge. TIC Americas is open to all the youth between 18 and 34 years of age citizens of any of the Member States of the OAS.

While Williams held a soft launch for NextPhenom in New Providence in November 2014, he said advancing as a finalist proves that his product does have international appeal.

“I entered this competition not only as a way to secure some sort of funding for my product, but also as a way to get international recognition for something I’ve always believed is an international product,” he stated. “Even if I don’t walk away with the top prize, I welcome this opportunity because it’s a chance to network with people from around the world. Sports, as you know, is a universal language spoken through such recognized events as the Olympics or FIFA World Cup. I believe my idea offers a unique concept on an international level and by participating in this competition and meeting potential investors, this is a wonderful way to get the validation I know it is worthy of receiving.”

Williams is spending his days leading up to TIC Americas watching business competition shows such as the Dragon’s Denand speaking with local and international businesspersons, as well as those who have done similar events before.

While I am the only Bahamian finalist in this year’s competition, I hope next year we see more Bahamians on the shortlist,” he said as a way of encouraging others to venture beyond their local community for support. “Many times we focus on home when we are living in a global environment so we have to think beyond The Bahamas. I encourage anyone who feels they have an international product to push that product internationally. There are no borders when it comes how far you can pitch your product and expand your audience. So by all means, go after your goals.”

Healthy living encouraged at BTVI's Health & Wellness Fair

J-Line Fitness members gave the crowd at BTVI’s health and wellness fair an exciting, energy-filled demonstration of a fitness workout.

Making healthy choices was the focus of a recent health and wellness fair held by the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI), attracting scores of students and professionals.

The lively fair had health, fitness and beauty all rolled into one as 28 exhibitors provided information, samples and demonstrations of their products and/or services.

According to BTVI’s Dean of Student Affairs, Racquel Bethel, the approach to wellness is holistic as January’s focus was on spiritual wellness, while February was financial fitness and matters of the heart, topped off with physical, mental and emotional health during this month.

“Wellness is more than physical, so we’re excited that our community partners are supporting us in recognition that wellness is important. This is their contribution to BTVI in raising healthy and positive citizens. Their presence proves they value our contribution to society,” she said.

Meanwhile, BTVI’s Acting President, Dr. Iva Dahl, who officially opened the 4th annual fair, encouraged attendees to take advantage of what was available, particularly the practical tips presented by participants.

“Please take the information seriously. We want you to live long lives without major complications,” she emphasized.

Doris Johnson Senior High’s Guidance Coordinator, Phyllis Woodside said bringing 25 of the school’s 11thgraders to the fair was opportune as her department’s focus this term is health and wellness.

“We want them to be healthy community and global citizens. We want them eating right. We don’t want them putting harmful substances in their bodies. We want them to be highly functional and cognizant of what is happening in their lives,” said Ms. Woodside.

Echoing Ms. Woodside’s sentiments about the fair coming at the right time was Hands for Hunger’s Volunteer Coordinator, Sunny Dhillon who was pleased to represent the non-government organization (NGO).

“Any opportunity to spread awareness is a good opportunity. We have a captive audience here today, from youth to professionals. Any chance to do things like this is beneficial,” he stated.

A number of fairgoers signed up to volunteer with the organization, which Mr. Dhillon was thrilled about. He said that in 2014, over 400 volunteers contributed over 3,000 hours to Hands for Hunger.

The fair, moderated by ZNS radio personality Prime Time Deon, offered health education, wellness and community resource information, healthy snacks and giveaways.

BTVI Office Administration major, Johnniqua Culmer said she soaked in what was presented, particularly as she has witnessed young people making unhealthy choices.

“This is an excellent venue to be informed,” said the 18-year-old, “It shows that BTVI is beyond just educating us about our future careers because without a healthy body and mind, we really can’t pursue those goals anyhow,” she concluded.

Sensei Clement Eneas puts on a mix martial arts demonstration with the help of a Defence Force Officer.

Doris Johnson Senior High School’s Guidance Coordinator, Phyllis Woodside learns more about Vitamin C from Commonwealth Drugs sales representative, Alicia Smith.

Extraordinary Body Solution’s Massage Therapist and Health Coach, Renea Minus shares information with a fair-goer.

BTVI’s Chairman, Felix Stubbs has a light moment with BTVI’s Nurse Voreetis Barr during the fair.

The 18th Annual Bahamas National Spelling Bee Final Competition was held on Sunday in the Crown Ballroom at Atlantis.

Lavard’s Legacy: Family and Record Label Announce Plans and New CEO

Lavard’s Legacy: Lavard ‘Manifest’ Parks. (Top to bottom) Livingston Parks, father; Lincoln Parks, brother and Chairman of the Board of Dunamus Soundz record label; Corridon Hanna, best friend and DSMG President; and Keith Rolle, new DSMG CEO.

(Nassau, The Bahamas) The legacy of Lavard ‘Manifest’ Parks is going to continue thanks to the combined efforts of his family and Dunamus Soundz Music Group team.

Although he was known internationally as an award winning gospel hip hop artist, Manifest and his wife Radel were installed as youth pastors at Bahamas Faith Ministries just last Easter. The couple, who were expecting their second child and their five year-old son Johanan were among those killed in a plane crash last November along with world-renown televangelist Dr. Myles Munroe.

Led by his father Livingston Parks, brother Lincoln Parks and best friend Corridon Hanna, some of Manifest’s initiatives that are confirmed to proceed include his personal projects such as the completion of his music album and book he was working on. The group announced that they will also continue events he founded such as the Bahamas Hip Hop Fest and Dunamas Soundz Music Conference.

Words really cannot state how grateful we are so many people have stepped forward to pledge their continued support to build on the foundation my brother built,” said Lincoln Parks who now takes the helm as Chairman of the Board of Directors for Dunamus Soundz Records. “It has been a rough transition but everyone is helping each other through the healing process and ensuring his work will not be in vain. Lavard and Radel were the essence of the Dunamus Soundz Music Group and we’ve been in touch with the artists and will be moving forward.”

He noted that the first undertaking will be the DSMG Music Conference which will take place on Thursday, April 2 at the Ministry of Youth Sports and Culture. He confirmed that both he and his father will be speaking.

Corridon Hanna, who served as Vice President on the label under Manifest revealed that a new CEO has been named in the person of Keith L. Rolle, a radio show host and fixture on Caribbean gospel music industry. Rolle formerly served as manager to Manifest.

We are excited to have Keith on board,” said Hanna, who is now the Dunamus Soundz President. “The thing is Manifest was such an astute businessman, he left us with a blueprint to be able to fulfill the purpose of this label. We all had some sort of email or correspondence from him, indicating our tasks, or following through with our duties as executives or artists. We have no choice but to continue and we thank everyone who has supported us.”

I’m blessed with the opportunity to be a part of a dynamic movement,” said Rolle. “Manifest and I were discussing so many things and now I realize that we have to rise together, we have to overcome together or what he started would have no merit at all. I want to go on record to thank all the artists, all the executive members and of course the family for allowing us to honor him in continuing what he started.”

A relaunch of the company website and Manifest track releases are scheduled to be announced at the conference. For more information, visit the Manifest and Dunamus Soundz Music Group social media pages. Online registration for the DSMG Music Conference is at http://goo.gl/FELaaH
