The government of Canada’s Department of Global Affairs, recently selected President of the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI), Dr. Robert W. Robertson, as a scholar in the Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP).

Co-organized by the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE), the ELAP scholarship is designed to support the development of human capital and the next generation of leaders in the Americas, while strengthening the linkages between post-secondary institutions in Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean.

Moreover, the purpose of the ELAP is to promote democratic governance, peace and security and prosperity in the region.  In addition to The Bahamas, countries participating include Jamaica, Belize, Honduras, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Panama, Uruguay, Peru and Cuba.

As a part of the scholarship, Dr. Robertson visited a number of community colleges in Canada. One of the visits was to Holland College in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. There are more than 50 Bahamian students attending Holland College. President of Holland College, Brian McMillan, has developed a strategic internationalization plan. President McMillan   notes that “the plan focuses on a high quality, safe learning environment that supports student success.”

A Bahamian studying at Holland College, Rex Charlton, said, “Holland College has been a wonderful opportunity, allowing me to experience the best of Prince Edward Island.” As a result of Dr. Robertson’s visit to Prince Edward Island, BTVI and Holland College are seeking to further explore mutually beneficial opportunities. Over the years, several BTVI students have been afforded study abroad opportunities at Holland College for a semester or two, before returning to complete their Associate of Applied Science degrees.  Representatives of Holland College are expected to visit BTVI before the end of November.

In addition, Dr. Robertson participated in CBIE’s 50th Annual Conference in Ottawa, Ontario, November 14-16. The conference is a landmark event that brought together more than 800 academics, delegates and stakeholders from Canadian and international institutions, provincial and federal governments as well as national educational associations. Many sessions addressed the growing importance of building a global perspective in academic institutions.

Bahamas Deputy Chief of Mission, Roselyn Horton is shown here with BTVI’s president, Dr. Robert W. Robertson during his recent visit to Canada.

Dr. Robertson noted that this conference was very important in understanding how academic intuitions are globalizing and why this type of initiative is important, particularly for BTVI. Dr. Robertson notes that “BTVI is focused on providing globally competitive skills for all of its students, and the linkages forged during the ELAP program and the CBIE conference will be of great assistance in meeting that mission.”

Dr. Robertson is the President of the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute located in Nassau, The Bahamas. He has more than 25 years’ experience leading award winning organizations in Canada, the United States and Central Asia.

Sir Durward Knowles Festival of Lights hoists sail December 10th!

Nassau, Bahamas – The Sir Durward Knowles Festival of Lights Christmas Boat Parade will sail into Nassau Harbour on December 10th, bringing Christmas joy after the destruction of Hurricane Matthew, with a brand new Grand Marshall and a new Platinum sponsor. The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism has now come aboard to help make this popular event bigger and better than ever.

Back for its 7th year, this boat parade of lights through historical Nassau Harbour, will again cast off on December 10th at 6:30pm. Starting in Arawak Bay, the lighted flotilla will make its way under the Nassau Bridges to Montagu and then circle back around to its start location, stopping both ways at Pier 14, giving the throngs of excited viewers a close-up of the boats as they turn in the channel.

This year’s Grand Marshall is Peter Andrews, well known sailor and philanthropist. “I am happy to Captain the ship for our patron Sir Durward Knowles,” said Andrews. “We are looking forward to a great event – I am reaching out to everyone to support us this year. "

Last year’s parade had over 20 boats, from the small sailboat Sea Girl to the huge commercial craft MV Garth Dean; despite choppy seas, it was hailed as a huge success. This year, Grand Marshall Andrews is hoping to entice more boaters to join the event and pull out all the stops. “We need this right now,” said Andrews. “We have bounced back from a major hurricane, we have endured some hard times and now as we head into Christmas we want everyone to join in and make this a great show for our not only us and our kids to see, but also as a memorable event for our tourists.”

Entry for the competition can be found on the events website http://www.festivaloflightsbahamas.com/. Winners for best decorated vessel in each category will win a cash purse and other prizes, including travel vouchers, hotel, dinners and more.

Winners are determined by a panel of five judges, who get a first hand view of each vessel from Alan Burrows boat which weaves them amongst the boats in the parade. Entries are judged on the following criteria: music, visible relevance to theme and originality.

This year’s theme is “A PIRATE CHRISTMAS IN THE BAHAMAS” and organizers are hoping to get a glimpse of the good ol’ days of Nassau Harbour and the infamous Blackbeard and Anne Bonny!

“We're very excited about this year's event and look forward to entertaining the crowds that come out to see the boats each year,” said Janet Johnson, Festival Chairman “Tickets for this year's Yellow Bird Party Boat are on sale now at $35 adults, $25 children, including a boxed Christmas dinner to enjoy. There will also be a DJ, dancing and a cash bar – an exciting and colourful way to start the Christmas season”

For more information visit the Festival of Lights Bahamas Facebook page, or call 427-3757. “We invite everyone to join in,” said Johnson. “Our event has been growing annually but to ensure its ongoing success we rely on the philanthropy of corporate Bahamas and friends of the Festival. This year we’d like to make a really huge show of it and make this event even more of a signature event for Nassau.”

By Bahamas Ministry of Tourism

The Best of the Best Regatta scheduled for December 1-4 is looking to bring sailors from all around the world to The Islands of The Bahamas and is expected to put the spotlight on the country.

The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism has teamed up with officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources and the Stars Sailors League (SSL) to put on the event to be held at Fort Montague Bay.

The Stars Sailor League boasts over 80,000 members from all around the world.

One hundred and twenty Bahamian Sailors will be competing in 18 traditional sloops –A, B and C classes, and 50 world class and Olympian star sailors will also be competing.

According to officials of SSL, members have competed for purses of up to $200,000 and the Best of the Best is looking to hold a handsome purse as well.

The event will also officially kick off the holiday season with Bahamian music and food and a kiddie corner while patrons enjoy the fierce competition.

Director of Events in the Ministry of Tourism Charity Armbrister said tourism officials are pleased to be a part of the event.

“We are pleased to welcome sailors from around the world to our shores to experience this event. We expect that this will bring sea lovers from around the world and we are hoping that these sailors and guests will return again and again to experience what our regattas have to offer,” she said.

The aim of the event is to introduce international sailors to Bahamian sloop sailing and advance The Bahamas’ sports tourism market.

Officials are also hoping that this event would encourage organizations to choose The Bahamas as the destination for sailing.

Consultant for Regattas in the Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources Reverend Dr. Philip McPhee spoke about the international impact of the inaugural event.

“Sailors from over 20 nations will gather in The Bahamas and every major sailor and boat that has won a national championship and event throughout the year will participate against each other and will be crowned ‘Best of the Best’ boat and skippers,” he said.

“We expect boaters from France, Britain, Germany, Australia, India just to name a few. We are blessed to have the Olympic champions and the world champions will be in our city. This is the greatest sailing event in the history of our country and we are over-elated. This will bring Bahamians together in an atmosphere of joy and peace and harmony. Sailing is the most powerful tool The Bahamas has. Regattas bring thousands of dollars to every major inhabited island.”

The 'Abaco' Parrots of Nassau Revisited

By Rolling Harbour

A while back I wrote a post about the mysterious population of Cuban parrots in Nassau. The mysteries being, how and when did they get there; and how and especially why is the population slowly increasing when there is scant evidence of nests, fledglings or juveniles; and no equivalent secluded location for cave-nesting, as the Abaco parrots do in the limestone holes in the Abaco National Park.

STOP PRESS Melissa Maura comments “I was brought a wounded juvenile years ago, and raised and successfully released it here along with a wild flock of 5 or 6. They ARE nesting in the odd large tree cavity in undisclosed parts of Nassau. I’m pretty certain the original pair escaped from a cage within the garden of people associated with the BNT many years ago. They may have been re-habilitated youngsters, originally requiring human help. At any rate our precious birdies are thriving – along with the odd impostor!”  Read more >>
