Cat Islanders Receive Scholarships

The future of Cat Island is beginning to look brighter, as the Cat Island Sailing Club Association awarded five students with scholarships to attend the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI).

President of the association, Pat Strachan, believes that the club should be known beyond being a group of people organizing a regatta, but rather as a group that ought to do things for the Cat Island community that leaves a lasting impression and helps it to grow.

“When you educate an individual, you cannot take that away.  We hope the recipients will return and help to rebuild Cat Island.  We want them to help in the development of Cat Island,” said Mr. Strachan.
The recipients include: Annfernique Stubbs, Office Assistant major; Kiana Brown, Cosmetology; Dario Russell, Welding and both Quincy Cepoudy and Kentone Brown, Electrical Installation. They all have landed $500 scholarships.

BTVI’s president, Dr. Robert W. Robertson, thanked Mr. Strachan and the association for its assistance and urged the scholarship recipients to take advantage of the opportunity.

A 2014 recipient of the award and Electrical Installation major, Arley Merzius, took time to attend the event, encouraging his fellow students to remain focused and not to take the scholarship for granted.

"I am grateful for the scholarship from the Cat Island Sailing Association. It shows that it cares for the further development of the island and its young people.  It also proves that they have confidence in BTVI," said Arley, who recently landed a job at Bahamas Power and Light (BPL).

This is the third consecutive year that the association has provided scholarships to Cat Island natives, with the help of The Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC). Mr. Strachan is confident that the students represent the future of Cat Island and are worth the investment.

Pictured seated from left to right are: Office Assistant major, Annfernique Stubbs; BTVI president, Dr. Robert W. Robertson and Cosmetology major, Kiana Brown. Standing from left to right are: the association’s Scholarship Chairman, Aliea Rolle; BTVI’s Associate Vice President of Fund Development, Alicia Thompson; association treasurer, Andrea Sturrup; association president, Pat Strachan and Electrical Installation major, Kentone Brown. Also present (far right), was Arley Merzius, a 2014 scholarship recipient. Missing are Dario Russell, Welding and Quincy Cepoudy, Electrical Installation.

Florida Manatee Decides It's Better in The Bahamas

FLORIDA MANATEE DECIDES IT’S BETTER IN THE BAHAMAS
Bahamian Research Group Confirms “Washburn” the Wandering Manatee’s Safe Arrival

A Florida manatee known as “Washburn” has made history by being the first manatee that researchers have actively tracked as it crossed the Gulf Stream and arrived in the Bahamas. Last week, scientists from the Bahamas Marine Mammal Research Organisation (BMMRO) confirmed the pregnant manatee is now swimming in the waters of the northern Abacos near Grand Cay.

Satellite transmissions scientists received from Washburn, the manatee’s tag as she crossed the Gulf Stream showing how she was initially carried north when she left Florida but then turned south towards the northern Abacos, which appears to be her new home.

Crossing the 4-mph Gulf Stream and finding the banks of the Bahamas is no easy feat for slow-swimming manatees typically found in shallow water so researchers monitoring her track during her near 200-mile trek were somewhat concerned. “Thanks to the quick response from BMMRO’s scientists, we received photos and video of Washburn’s condition upon arrival in Abaco and could confirm that she had made it safely,” said Dr. James Powell, executive director of Florida’s Sea to Shore Alliance, the group that tagged and released Washburn on early November in Florida.

“Washburn” has joined a hand-full of other Florida manatees that have immigrated to the Bahamas. BMMRO has worked with manatee researchers at the U.S. Geological Survey, to document at least four manatees in the Bahamas that were previously from Florida (identified as known individuals by the unique scar patterns on their body). BMMRO’s executive director, Dr. Diane Claridge explains that, “Due to successful management efforts in Florida, the manatee population is slowly increasing which is causing a natural expansion of their range, and is likely why manatees are increasingly seen in the Bahamas”.

If this trend continues, the Bahamas could become home to more manatees which is why one of BMMRO’s primary outreach programmes is focused on increasing awareness about manatees to ensure their wellbeing. BMMRO’s work has reached out to thousands of Bahamians through social media, and, as a result, over 400 people are now helping BMMRO scientists track manatees as they move throughout the islands. Claridge says, “Our goal is for the Bahamas to provide a safe environment for Washburn and other Florida manatees that make the Bahamas their new home.”

For Washburn, this was not her first unusual journey. She made headlines in the US this fall when she was rescued from the cooling waters of Cape Cod, Massachusetts on September 22nd, 2016, by the International Fund for Animal Welfare and began her rehabilitation at Connecticut’s Mystic Aquarium before being flown to SeaWorld Orlando by the Cape Cod Coast Guard Air Station. Her rescue and rehabilitation were coordinated by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and the Manatee Rehabilitation Partnership, a cooperative group of more than two dozen private and governmental agencies that pool resources to rehabilitate injured Florida manatees and then release them back into their natural habitat.

After treatment for cold stress, Washburn was released on November 1st near New Smyrna Beach, Florida, at which time Sea to Shore Alliance scientists placed a satellite tag on her as part of a manatee movement study. Washburn spent 11 days in the area, feeding and resting normally with other manatees, before travelling south down the coast, then east offshore and into the Gulf Stream. Scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey, the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission, and Sea to Shore Alliance analysed data from Washburn’s tag as she crossed the Gulf Stream. Washburn arrived on Little Bahama Bank just off Walker’s Cay on Thanksgiving Day and was photographed by BMMRO scientists northeast of Grand Cay on November 26th.

The Bahamas Marine Mammal Research Organisation (BMMRO) is a non-profit group based in Sandy Point, Abaco whose mission is to promote the conservation of marine mammals through scientific research and educational outreach. The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI) recently raised funds to assist the Sister Sister Breast Cancer Support Group - a non-profit charitable group for women diagnosed with breast cancer.

A cheque of just over $700 was presented to group president, Andrea Sweeting.  For the past five years, the group has received a helping hand from BTVI, in its fight against breast cancer.

The funds were amassed during BTVI’s Pink Awareness Bake Sale held, where students, staff and faculty teamed up to have fun and treats, but more importantly to bring awareness to the prevalence of breast cancer, early detection and the battle against the deadly disease.

BTVI’s president, Dr. Robert W. Robertson, recently made the cheque presentation along with Dean of Student Services, Racquel Bethel and a group of students.  Ms. Bethel expressed continued support on BTVI’s behalf.

Shown in the centre of the front row are Dr. Robertson, Ms. Sweeting and Ms. Bethel.

Bahamas Bags in the Air NY

Fort Lauderdale, FL - December 2, 2016 - Agents from the New Jersey and New York travel communities crowded venues to experience and enjoy the excitement of "More Bahamas" presentations, spectacularly staged by the New York based team of The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, in a series across the tri-city.

Aimed at educating travel agents as well as exposing them to a taste of Bahamian culture, "More Bahamas" was delivered by the team in a Talk Show styled Bahamas presentation from directors chairs, against a Bahamas step and repeat background. Agents were then wowed by the lively and participatory performance of Bahamian entertainer extraordinaire, Julien Believe.  The Bahamian artist, who is an international performer and song writer, delighted the agents and involved them with dance steps to the rhythmic and cultural music of The Bahamas, including some of his personal hits.

More Bahamas NY Trade Show

Starting in New Jersey and then moving to Long Island and Manhattan, New York, the Bahamas Tourism presentations were voted as great "edutainment” events.  Travel agents raved about the innovative format. There was dancing, clapping, lifting bags high and waving dinner napkins in the air, throughout the upbeat events, which agents declared an unqualified success. Many of the agents also said of the presentations,  "It was the best travel presentation I have attended for the year."

In addition to information on the many new updates in The Bahamas, the ease of travelling to The Bahamas from the East Coast and The Bahamas' preparedness for the winter travel season, agents were feted to a gourmet dinner at each event, and participated in travel games.  The highlight of each event, however, was gifts and prizes including the Grand prize trip of a stay at the newly opened Warwick all-inclusive resort, Paradise Island.

Bahamas NY Presentations

The events were a part of The Bahamas Trade and PR Sales Mission to the area and were led by the Bahamas Area Manager, New York, Mikala Moss, assisted by other Bahamas New York based, team members, Chrystal Bethel and Valencia Carroll.  The tourism team also included Valery Brown-Alce, Sr. Director of Sales U.S, based in New York; Dupree Smith, District Manager, Houston and Jeannie Gibson, Manager Global Communications, Plantation, Florida.

The series of presentations included Trade Shows that provided for agents to interact with Bahamas partners and vendors.  Participants at the various events included The Grand Bahama Island Tourism Board, Carmel Churchill, Donna Munroe and Melesia Parker; Nassau Paradise Island Promotion Board, Rich Chomenski; and representatives of hotels and destination products including Sandals Resorts, Nassau and Exuma; Breezes Resort, Nassau; Forbes Charter, Grand Bahama; Valentine's Resort, Eleuthera; Grand Lucayan Resort, Grand Bahama; Viva Wyndham Resort, Grand Bahama; Delta Airlines and Vacation Express.

Julien Believe and NY Travel Agents

The agents in attendance at the events will be added to Bahamas Tourism’s Travel Agent's mailing list to receive a monthly Bahamas Travel Agents Newsletter. The agents were encouraged to visit the newly updated bahamas.com website and also to enroll in the recently unveiled Bahamas Specialist Program.
