Legend of BooBoo Hill

BooBoo Hill provides a magnificent panaramic view of the central Exumas.  Plus legend has it that it’s named BooBoo Hill because it’s haunted by the souls of a missionary ship that went aground on the reef below and sank with everyone still aboard.  Others will tell you that the missionaries are buried on BooBoo Hill beneath the rock cairns.  Regardless, on moonlit nights with the wind howling supposedly you can hear them singing.

Fresh off of his win in the first challenge on Mission Catwalk Season Three, local fashion designer Theodore Elyett is getting a fashion nod from Bernadette Christie, wife of the prime minister.

Elyett’s winning design – a casual dress which captures the beauty of a Caribbean sunset instantly became a favourite in the regional competition after the April 13 challenge win. His design was reproduced for sale in one of Jamiaca’s retail clothing stores Lee’s Fifth Avenue.

On Tuesday Elyett made his way to Bahamian shores for a special presentation of a custom made dress to Mrs Christie. The Caribbean sunset design evolved into a garden party as Mrs Christie’s custom made gown features hues of spring’s favourite colours: white, yellow, green and hints of sunset red.

Eleutheran Beautician Trez ‘Nails’ Music Contract With Dunamus Soundz

Trez signs music contract with Lavard ‘Manifest’ Parks, president and founder of Dunamus Soundz Music Group.

By Arthia Nixon, The Ambassador Agency

(Nassau, The Bahamas) Former gospel girl band member, Trez is returning to music but this time as a soloist and with a recording contract from the Dunamus Soundz Music Group.

Trez, a James Cistern resident, first hit national radio at age 16, as one fourth of Divine Praise, led by Eleutheran singer/producer Jaynell. That was 10 years ago – before she graduated Central Eleuthera High, before she married popular pastor Jamie ‘DJ Crunktified’ Isaacs, before she became a successful entrepreneur and before she became a mom.

Now, she’s prepared to balance her bustling nail salon business with studio sessions, even though it will take a few flights back and from Eleuthera to Nassau to accomplish her dream of having a gospel/inspirational album.

“It’s a dream come true, a blessing and a new experience,” she said has her husband held their newest addition to the family while she took a break from recording at DSMG studios. “It’s something I’ve wanted to get back into and I’ve always prepared myself to return to music. It was always one of my dreams and I never once gave up on it. I’m thankful that my husband is so supportive and encouraged me to continue beyond my role as worship leader at our church.”

Despite the support, Trez admits working on her first single Cast Me Not Away comes with a bit of a new feeling.

“I’m used to being in the studio with three other people,” she reminisced. “Now, I’m the one writing, singing, harmonizing, and creating all by myself. It will take some getting used to but I do miss the group and having the others because we cheered each other on and stuff.”

Trez says she is excited to work with award-winning producer and Bahamian hip-hop pioneer Lavard ‘Manifest’ Parks, noting that he made her feel comfortable from the moment she stepped into the studio.

“Trez is a pleasure to work with,” said Parks. “I’ve known her husband because of his role as a gospel music promoter in Eleuthera but I’m getting to know her as a soloist and more seasoned singer. She’s grown a lot since the days she was in the group and I think her sound will certainly be appreciated along with her message. At DSMG, we always look for passion within the person and we are pleased to welcome her to our family.”

Anuschka Wright To Headline and Host Debut Jazz In Bloom Concert

By Arthia Nixon, The Ambassador Agency

(Nassau, The Bahamas) Known for her sultry and smooth vocals, young singer Anuschka Wright has sealed her place as the youthful new face of jazz in The Bahamas. The young talent who is respected by others on the scene for her covers by industry icons such as Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald is now headlining her first self-produced show, Jazz in Bloom.

Wright revealed that there are several familiar names on board to ensure the musical blossoms bloom when the concert is held in the Governor's Ballroom of the historic British Colonial Hilton Hotel.

Still, many find it ironic that Wright herself is putting on such a major event especially since she has only been singing jazz for four years. The 23 year-old admitted that even while a member of the National Children’s Choir of The Bahamas she didn’t think a career in music was in her future.

“I did some choir work with Patricia Bazard and Audrey Wright and was with an ensemble for a year,” she recalled. “I used to sing solos when I was younger but I considered myself a background singer. I enjoyed harmonizing and blending in and you wouldn’t be able to pick me out distinctively.”

Now, Wright is not only distinctive, she’s officially found her voice.

“I’ve been singing jazz for four years,” she said. “I started out with Billie Holiday at the end of high school because someone told me that jazz helps you understand and experience music. After that, I was introduced to Ella Fitzgerald and later Sarah Vaughn. Then I went to open mics and art fairs and found my niche. I know it sounds cliché or whatever but I would not have chosen it [jazz music], it has to be God who led me toward this.”

Wright revealed that the reason she is hosting the event is to help pay for her tuition for music school.

“I have several options,” she gushed. “I’ve been accepted to a few places and narrowed it down to New York or Montreal, Canada. Both have a lot to offer a jazz musician with festivals and local jazz scenes.”

For now, Wright is the new face of the Bahamian jazz scene and when she goes live she plans on taking listeners on what she defines as her journey in jazz, beginning with Ain’t Misbehavin’ the first song she learned in the genre, to her now increased repertoire. Joining her on the journey is Adrian D’Aguilar famed Bahamian band leader and upright bassist as well as Ralph Munnings of Grand Bahama on alto sax.

“I am very excited,” she says of her pending performance. “There are a few more names that will be added to the roster, including two local singers and two American musicians. Jazz In Bloom is certainly going to be an experience to remember.”
